The Voice In The Dark

1472 Words
The light disappeared. Adrian remained still. His eyes stayed fixed on the pendant in his hand. For several seconds, he didn't move. Then he looked at Kyra. She was still unconscious. Her breathing was steady, but her face looked strangely peaceful. Too peaceful. Adrian gently placed the pendant on the table beside her. He didn't want to touch it again. Not after what had just happened. He had seen the light. He had felt the warmth. And now he couldn't ignore the truth any longer. The pendant wasn't simply connected to Kyra's memories. It was responding to them. Adrian sat beside her. He carefully moved a strand of hair away from her face. "Come back to me," he whispered. Kyra didn't move. He glanced at the clock. Almost midnight. He had been hoping she would wake up before then. She didn't. Adrian leaned back slowly. His mind returned to what she had said. *I can see where I grew up.* He had heard the words. He had watched the way her face changed when she saw that place. There had been recognition in her eyes. Real recognition. But there was something else. Fear. Adrian had seen it just before she collapsed. He knew Kyra was getting closer to something. Something she wasn't ready to understand. He stood and walked toward the window. Outside, the city was quiet. The lights from the buildings across the street reflected against the glass. Everything looked normal. But Adrian knew better. Nothing was normal anymore. Not since Kyra had started remembering. He closed his eyes. For a moment, he allowed himself to remember the past. The place beneath the silver sky. The tree with white leaves. The girl who had once stood beside him. The girl who had trusted him. The girl who had disappeared. Adrian opened his eyes again. He had promised himself he would never let Kyra remember everything at once. But promises were becoming harder to keep. Behind him, the bed creaked. Adrian turned immediately. Kyra moved slightly. Her fingers curled against the blanket. "Kyra?" Her lips parted. A faint sound escaped her. Adrian moved closer. "What is it?" She didn't answer. Her breathing became faster. Then she whispered something. Adrian leaned closer. "What did you say?" Kyra's eyes remained closed. "Don't..." Adrian frowned. "Don't what?" Her fingers tightened. "Don't let them..." Her voice faded. "Kyra." He gently touched her shoulder. "Wake up." She suddenly opened her eyes. She gasped. Adrian stepped back. Kyra looked around the room. Her breathing was uneven. "Where am I?" "You're safe." She stared at him. Then at the table. Her eyes immediately found the pendant. "Where is it?" Adrian picked it up. "Here." Kyra sat up. "What happened?" "You collapsed." She touched her head. "I remember." "What do you remember?" Kyra looked down at the pendant. "The girl." Adrian's expression tightened. "What about her?" "I was trying to reach her." "Did you?" "No." She shook her head. "But I heard something." "What?" Kyra looked at him. "The voice." Adrian waited. "It told me to keep the pendant safe." "I know." Kyra frowned. "You heard it?" "No." "Then how do you know?" Adrian hesitated. "You told me." She looked away. "No." "What?" "I don't think that's what happened." Adrian studied her carefully. "What do you mean?" Kyra slowly shook her head. "I don't think the voice was talking to me." Adrian's expression changed. "Who was it talking to?" Kyra didn't answer immediately. She looked at the pendant. "It was talking to the little girl." Silence filled the room. Adrian's heart began beating faster. "What makes you think that?" "I don't know." Kyra pressed her fingers against her forehead. "It just felt wrong when I heard it." "Wrong how?" "Like I wasn't supposed to hear it yet." Adrian stared at her. Kyra looked up. "And I think the little girl was supposed to give me something." "What?" "I don't know." She closed her eyes. "I almost remembered." "Almost?" Kyra nodded. "There was something in her hand." Adrian stepped closer. "What was it?" "I couldn't see." "Try." Kyra opened her eyes. "I don't want to force it." "You're right." Adrian immediately stepped back. Kyra noticed his reaction. "You really are afraid of what I'll remember." He didn't deny it. "Yes." "Why?" He looked at her for a long moment. "Because memories can hurt." Kyra gave him a faint smile. "So can secrets." Adrian looked away. She slowly got out of bed. Her legs felt weak, but she managed to stand. "I need to know where that place is." Adrian shook his head. "Not yet." "Why?" "Because you don't know what you're looking for." "I know what I'm looking for." "What?" "The tree." He stared at her. "The place I saw." "You don't know where it is." "But you might." Adrian didn't answer. Kyra's eyes narrowed. "You know it." "I've seen something similar." "Where?" He hesitated. "Not here." "Then where?" Adrian looked toward the window. "Somewhere you can't reach." Kyra stepped closer. "Why?" "Because it doesn't exist anymore." Her expression fell. "What do you mean?" "The place you remember was destroyed." "When?" "A long time ago." Kyra shook her head. "But it looked alive." "Memories don't always show things as they are." "Then what do they show?" Adrian looked at her. "Sometimes they show what you lost." The words stayed between them. Kyra lowered her eyes. A strange sadness settled over her. "I feel like I've lost something." "You have." "Someone?" Adrian didn't answer. Kyra looked at him. "Someone I loved?" His silence was enough. Her heart tightened. "Who?" Adrian looked away. "I don't know if you're ready." "That's not your decision." He looked back at her. "I know." "Then tell me." Before he could respond, the pendant in his hand suddenly became warm. Adrian froze. Kyra looked down. The symbol on its surface began to glow. Once. Twice. Then the light spread across the room. Kyra stepped backward. "What is happening?" "I don't know." The glow grew brighter. Then the room became strangely cold. Kyra's eyes widened. She could hear something. A whisper. Very faint. But this time, it wasn't coming from inside her mind. It was coming from the pendant. Adrian heard it too. His face changed. "What did it say?" Kyra stared at the pendant. She could barely breathe. "It said my name." Adrian's voice dropped. "Kyra?" She shook her head. "No." The whisper came again. Clearer this time. A name. A name Kyra had never heard before. Yet the moment she heard it, tears filled her eyes. She didn't know why. She didn't know who had spoken it. But something inside her recognized it. Adrian stared at her. "You heard it." Kyra nodded. "What was it?" She opened her mouth. Nothing came out. The pendant suddenly went dark. The room fell silent. Then Kyra whispered, "I don't know." Adrian frowned. "But?" She looked at him. "But I think that's who I was." Adrian's face went pale. Kyra saw it. "You know the name." He didn't answer. "You know it, don't you?" Adrian slowly lowered his eyes. "Yes." Her heart stopped. "Then tell me." He remained silent. "Adrian." His eyes met hers. For the first time, Kyra saw something she had never seen in him before. Not fear. Not concern. Guilt. "Why do you know my name?" Adrian looked down at the pendant. "Because I was there when it was erased." Kyra stared at him. "What?" "I was there." His voice was barely above a whisper. "When they took your name away." The room seemed to disappear around her. Kyra took a step backward. "You knew." Adrian nodded slowly. "Yes." "You knew all this time?" "I knew part of it." "Part?" "I knew who you were before you became Kyra Evermere." Her eyes filled with tears. "Then why didn't you tell me?" Adrian swallowed. "Because you made me promise." Kyra froze. "I made you promise?" He nodded. "Before they erased your name, you looked at me and told me something." "What?" Adrian's voice broke slightly. "You told me that if you ever found your way back..." He paused. "...I should let you remember on your own." Kyra stared at him. A tear slipped down her cheek. "Why?" Adrian looked at her. "Because you were afraid of what would happen if someone else remembered for you." Silence. Then, somewhere outside the apartment, a distant sound echoed through the night. A bell. Once. Twice. Three times. Kyra's face changed. She recognized it. The same sound from the memory. Seven times. Adrian turned toward the window. The fourth bell rang. Then the fifth. Kyra whispered, "What's happening?" Adrian didn't answer. The sixth bell rang. He turned back to her. His expression was filled with dread. "The seventh bell is coming." The final bell rang. And every light in the city went out.
