POV Andy The Leader The queen had said we could pick fruit from the orchard close to Sutton manor so I went with two of the men so they could help me carry some fruit back to our house. I had always been carful not to take too much because I didn’t want to piss off the queen. As we approached I could smell her and I wasn’t sure if it was really her or just my s*x starved imagination. My two men went over to a near by bush to pick some ripe raspberries and I went down to the small river to splash cold water on my face and to my surprise the queen was there. She had her feet in the water and her face up to the sun. She was wearing tight white jeans and a T-shirt and I could see she wasn’t wearing a bra because her n*****s were standing on end. I looked around and she was on her own except for a large black horse tied to a near by tree. I didn’t know what to do but I knew I wanted her. She must have heard me because she looked around and her face softened “hi, how are you?” She said in her lovely soft voice just like she had spoke to Poppy. She stood up in the water and said “I’m really embarrassed but I don’t think I know your name” she gave me a huge smile “I’m Andy” “hi Andy it’s nice to meet you properly. Would you like to sit down? I have some cool lemonade if you’d like some” I nodded my head “I’d like that, I might put my feet in to cool off if you don’t mind” I asked and I realised how stupid I sounded “of course you can, it’s not my river” she said with a little giggle. I went down and the cool water was fantastic but being this close to the queen made me nervous “so how are things?” She asked and I shrugged my shoulders, I didn’t want to say too much. “I know what you’re thinking. I know that you think I’m a monster but everything I do is to protect my friends, they are my family” she seemed more human. “Can I ask you something?” I asked and she looked a bit surprised “Only if can ask you some questions” she said sitting down and she patted the ground next to her, I went over and sat down “how did you know how to fix my air conditioning and heating in my house?” I asked and she let out the sweetest giggle “I was the architect that built your house” she said as she flicked her hair “really?” She nodded her head, “now it’s my turn” she said “can I ask you, how did you know I was a beauty queen?” Her eyes narrowed as I stuttered out my answer “Lord Sutton told me, I played golf with him and his mates once or twice and I even came over to Sutton manor to shoot with him” she looked out to the river as I spoke and I could tell mentioning her husband was a sore point with her. “oh right. I remember him mentioning golf with the neighbour” “I wonder what happened to him” she shrugged her shoulders “I don’t know where Anthony is but I cut his friend Ralph from his belly button to his throat and hung him on the gates. It was a slow death but he was an awful man. Would you like some lemonade?” She said it all in a lovely sing song voice and it was strange. “He was a prick, and I’m sorry but so was Lord Sutton” I said and she spat out her lemonade and laughed. “Yes he was.. do you guys need anything Andy? You know I’d be happy to help you.” “Thank you for everything you’ve done for us. You’ve been amazing” “what you guys did was so wrong but you and your men kept us safe during those awful times” “what do you mean?” “Just that you and your men were constantly sniffing around the walls of Sutton Manor and scaring away other groups of men” “I wish I could remember” “its better that you don’t remember Andy. You probably wouldn’t be able to live with yourself if you could.” I put my head in my hands. “The shame I feel is unbearable some days but when you can’t remember what happened it kind of makes it worse.” “We all need to start moving on, that’s why we help you” “thanks again for everything” “any time” she said and I felt like I wanted to kiss her. She was so lovely and sexy but I held back because I knew there would be a fate worse than death. We got up and I walked her over to her horse. She was telling me that Poppy and Ciaren had settled into there new home and I couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. She stroked the horse and I jumped back when it made a noise “so you’re not a country person?” she said with a giggle “no I’m a Londoner through and through” “I was brought up in council estate in Glasgow. I moved to Sutton manor when my mum died to live with my gran. She was the cook there. I had spent my summers here so I had learned a few things about country living when I was growing up” I had thought that she had born into high society but to know she had come from nothing just like me made me like her even more. “can I ask you? How did you know that Poppy was at my house?” She sighed “that bomb had an effect on the women too, it made you all into s*x crazed nutters but it left the women broody.” “I had no idea” she nodded her head “those of us that don’t have children can smell them in the air, I can even tell if it’s a boy or girl and if they’re hungry or happy. And men can smell women of child bearing years that don’t have kids. I know that your men can smell me” I felt my cheeks burn red “yes we can” I admitted “what do I smell like?” She asked and I felt like she was being flirty with me and I was loving it. “You smell like coconut and pineapple” she put her hands over her face and she looked embarrassed “that’s so weird. Do you know that before the effects wore off we used to smear s**t on the walls and hang dead bodies to mask our scent. The man that lives with you, you know the older guy” “Do you mean Hugh?” I asked “He used to stand at our gates and when you lot were howling he was different. It was like he was weeping. Anyway sometimes we couldn’t sleep because of you lot howling so I used to ride my horse out of the gates so you would all chase me and I would lead you back to your house. You were really fast, sometimes I thought that you would catch me” I felt instantly guilty again “I’m so sorry” I said “don’t be sorry, I don’t know what you guys did or who you hurt but for the last six months of all that you guys were at our gates every day and I didn’t kill you because you scared other men away and I knew that you weren’t hurting any women during that time” I let out a huge sigh “that’s kind of put my mind at ease” I felt like she had took a weight off my shoulders. She untied her horse but I didn’t want her to leave. I needed to do something to make her stay there because speaking to her had been the most exciting thing to happen to me in a long time. In the days before the bomb went off I would have asked her for her phone number but now I didn’t know what to do. I mean I couldn’t ask her out on a date but I was desperate to spend more time with her. The Queen looked behind me and said “I better get back, oh here come your men” but when I turned around I noticed that it wasn’t my men. There was 5 of them and they ran up to us. “Are you the queen? We can smell that you are” they said as the tried to surround us and I stood in front of her. She pushed me out the way “who’s asking?” She said and she was in no way scared but I was bricking it because these guys looked crazy “the boss sent us, he wants us to bring you to him” The Queen rolled her eyes and put her hands on her hips “tell your boss to f**k off” she said with such confidence that the guy was shocked. “I don’t think you have a choice” he said and the men laughed. “b***h please” she said and laughed louder and as she did women dropped down from the trees and they were all dressed in all black and the circled the men. “Do you know that women can smell children?” She asked and I could see the young girl next to her was angry as she stared the guy down. “I didn’t know that” said one of the men and he looked shifty “I can smell kids on you, frightened kids. I hate to think what your doing to them but I can’t let that happen” one of his own men turned to him “what are you doing to kids?” He asked and he was just as disgusted as we were. “What do you want us to do with them quennie?” Asked one of the women. “Let this one in the middle live, he’ll need to give the boss a message that he can’t have me. And the rest I think we should cut them up into tiny pieces. What do you think?” The woman shook her head “but your wearing all white” the queen looked down at herself “oh yeah, ok well” she looked up at the tree above her “Zara darling, throw me down a shooter” all the men turned and started to run and a gun fell out of the tree. The women cheered as the queen shot four of the men in the back and I remembered her husband Lord Sutton had told me she was an amazing shot. She let one of the men run away and she shouted after him “tell your boss I’ll kill every one of you if you come back here. God Save The Queen” I was speechless as I watched her kill them. It was like it was nothing to her but I suppose they were trying to kidnap her. When she was finished the women all cheered and then she let out a huge sigh. Then my two men appeared beside me and they looked terrified. They put their hands up and the queen turned gun on them. “these men are with me” I said quickly before she could shoot them. The queen put down her gun and one of the women squealed “John” she took off her dark glasses and black cap and my friend John was pale “who is this Sarah?” Asked the Queen “It’s my brother John” she said as she ran towards John and they wrapped their arms around each other. The queen looked at me and clutched her chest and I could see she had a tear in her eye. All the women gathered around them and shook John by the hand and hugged Sarah and the queen hugged them both. “Natalie lives with us too but she’s went to Dublin to raid a pharmacy for some supplies, she will be back soon, she’s going to scream when she sees you” John started to cry “I’ve been so worried about you but to know both of my sisters have been safe this whole time…” he turned to the queen “thank you for keeping them safe” he said and the queen hugged him again “I think we should have a party” she said “why don’t you go home and get your men and bring them to Sutton Manor tonight and we’ll cook you all dinner and have a few beers” she said with a bright smile and the idea of eating a home cooked meal made my stomach growl and the thought of seeing her again made me hard. She was the greatest woman I had ever met and I counted the minutes until I could see her again.
