POV Andy The Leader
A few months had passed since I woke up in my bedroom with no memory and it was really tough to survive. When I woke up in my house there was around 10 men there and none of us could remember a thing. One of the guys Ciaren said he had to leave to find out if his mother was ok and we didn’t see him again. I often thought about him because there was no way that his mother would still have been there. Myself and the other men decided to stay together in my house as we knew it wasn’t safe to go outside. After a few weeks a few of us traveled into Dublin in search of tinned food and candles and it was shocking to see what had happened to the world. It was like a real bomb had went off. The streets were empty. We found a huge supermarket and broke in and ransacked the stock room. We took as much as we could carry. On the way back to my house there was signs every where saying ‘men are killed on sight. God save the Queen’ I wondered what or who this was but I knew deep down I would never want to meet this queen. We passed the dead body of a man lying by the dirt road and he had ‘God Save The Queen’ carved into his chest. I wanted to get my men back to the house as soon as possible before any one caught us. As the winter went on myself and the men were struggling because my house didn’t have any power or heating and it was freezing. We were huddled together in one room with a small fire burning. We were all hungry and miserable. The snow was deep by now and there was no wood for us to burn. I really thought that we would all die there. One day we all sat in the living room arguing about what we were going to do and Hugh stormed upstairs to get away from us all when the front door burst open and there was at least thirty woman all wearing black caps and dark sunglasses. They were all holding guns and telling us to get on our knees for the queen. I really thought our time was up “put your heads down, don’t even look at her” they screamed and we all did as we were told. In that moment I would have been happy for them to put me out of my misery. I stared at the floor and I heard slow foot steps walking through the front door and her sweet scent filled the room. The foot steps went straight by us all and down stairs to my basement. The whole time there was silence except I could hear someone down stairs whistling. It had been so long since I had heard any kind of music that it was oddly comforting. The next minute all the lights came on in the house and the flames came on my fancy fire place. I could hear the whistling come up stairs and towards us. Then a woman spoke in a Scottish accent and she was frightening “Right you stupid pricks I couldn’t watch you bunch of idiots for another minute. This house has its own generator which means it doesn’t need to be supplied, it also has electric heating which means you don’t need to set that sad little fire because you bunch of losers are going to end up burning the whole area down if the place goes up in flames. It means you can all have a hot shower and keep your blinds shut so that no one can see your lights on. I brought you all over some stew and fresh bread and a few packets of noodles and all the junk you seem to like” she leaned forward to one of my men that was next to me “what do you say?” She asked in a patronizing tone. “I could tell that James was terrified because he was shaking “thank you” he stuttered “No, not thank you, you say god save the Queen” there was silence and then James finally stuttered “god save the queen” “that’s right, enjoy your food you bunch of rapists. Oh and Merry Christmas. Come on ladies let’s leave them to it.” I had no idea what month it was and to find out it was Christmas Day was kind of shocking. The Queen walked towards the front door to leave but then she stoped in her tracks “well, well what do we have here?” She bent down in front of Richard “do you remember me” she hissed at him “yes Lady Sutton” “and what do you have to say for yourself?” “I’m sorry I tried to attack you” “well sorry’s not good enough” there was a long silence as she walked towards the door and most of the woman followed her. Then she shouted over her shoulder “take him outside I need a word with him” Richard was screaming as they dragged him out. two of the woman stayed behind “who’s your leader?” They asked and I put my hand up. “Keep your men in line and away from the Queens land” I nodded my head “what do you say?” She asked “god save the Queen” I said. When they left we all rushed towards the food they had left and tore at the bread with our bare hands. We were like a bunch of wild animals that hadn’t been fed. The house was warm and for the first time I could actually think straight. “We need to get this place in order, lets start cleaning up and we can organise a proper living situation.” I said and the men agreed. After a while the house was clean and we all had a short shower and put on clean clothes. I went into the kitchen and Hugh had sat all the men at the table. They were laughing and joking it was nice to see them all so relaxed then Hugh said that he was glad he hadn’t met the Queen and that he had a surprise “at the bottom of the box of food the Queen left was two huge apple pies” I couldn’t believe my ears. We all tucked into the delicious pie and I couldn’t help but wonder why she was helping us.
A few years passed and the queens gang would drop off food and they even gave us seeds to plant our own vegetables. Then after a while they gave us some chickens which meant we had fresh eggs. Then the queen gave word that she would allow us to go down to the orchard in the summer so that we could have some fruit. Although we hadn’t seen her since that day in my house she had been kind to us. And she was the only reason that we had survived. I wondered why she had helped us but I didn’t dare to ask.
