The Baby next Door

It is perfect

"Wow, that was an amazing sleep." Kate seemed to enjoy that sleep.

"I know right. So peaceful, and the lack of neighbors equals to lack of noise. There isn't a sound to be heard. I love it!"

I jumped out of bed and looked for my slippers, which seemed to have crawled under the bed. Kate, on the other hand, remained in bed.

"Where are you off to in such a hurry?" Kate smiled while saying this. I understood that she was mocking the fact that I had to go to work while she got the day completely off.

"Very funny. I have to go to work. Let us not forget that the entire reason we are here today, is that I have that promotion. That is literally the reason we are here."

"I know babe. I am just messing with you. Now go, you are already running late!"

"Alright, alright. I am going. Love you."

"I know." Kate smirked as she said this. I thought that maybe there was not anything wrong with this house and I was just being paranoid.

I head to the shower and take a well deserved bath. The shower was a lot fancier than our old one - it had different setting for different requirements. For example, if you wanted to have a regular shower, you put it on the first setting, but if you wanted only the bottom part of your body to be washed, you put the necessary setting. Etc.

Once I got out of the shower, I realized that Kate was not in the room. I did not take too much notice of it and instead got dressed. I needed dress smart - full black suit with a bloodshot red tie. Gorgeous! I ordered the suit from an online store and had it custom designed to suit the Chief Executive Officer of the Company. The suit was fitted with the finest material I could get my hands on, it was made of pure silk and it was sprayed with the finest scent in the entirety of the Country!

Once I had gotten dressed, I headed downstairs. I was greeted by Kate who was making breakfast. It smelt scrumptious. It was eggs, fresh tomato chutney and sausages. She also made a hot cup of tea with perfectly toasted bread.

"I am glad you could make it. Come please, sit."

"Kate! You know I am already late and now you have made the most delicious breakfast I have seen in a long time!"

"I know you are late, but please do join me."

I could tell that she really wanted me to join her, so I decided that being a few minutes for work would not hurt.

"Okay fine. I will tell Mike that I was tired and overslept."

I sat down at the table, which was made of pure marble by the way, and dug right in.

Midway of eating, I decided that this was too good for just a simple 'Thank you' to suffice, so I decided that I should do something special.

"Hey, how about tomorrow we go to see the scenery this city has to offer? We could go shopping, we could visit the carnivals, maybe go to the aquarium! What do you say?"

I watched as her face had lit up with pure excitement - Her eyes lit up and her smiled beamed from ear to ear. She was so excited that she even chuckled slightly.

"That sounds perfect!"

I went back up to brush my teeth, while Kate sat back down to finish the rest of her breakfast. Once I had finished doing so, I headed out to my car. I hopped in the drivers seat as Kate waved goodbye from the entrance of the house. I backed out of the driveway and began driving to the office. I saw all the places I was planning to take Kate to the following day.

As I pulled in to the Office Valet area, I was greeted by a very confused Mike.

"Good morning Mike!" I shouted as my car was being parked. I had my suitcase in my hand and was ready to tackle the duties that came with the title of Chief Executive Officer.

"Um, hi Miles. Question - what exactly are you doing here?"

This question had stopped me dead in my tracks.

"Uh, well I am reporting for work. I do work here right?" I said this in a joking tone, but after I saw Mike's face, I was hoping that I worked here.

"Yes, yes you do, but I mentioned in the email that I am giving you the weekend off, so that Kate and yourself can get settled in into the new house. You did read the email, right?"

It was in that moment that I had realized that I had forgotten to read the email. Now I stood there, looking like an i***t, thinking of an excuse for why I am standing here. I wanted the Earth to swallow me whole.

"The email? Oh yes, the email! Of course I read it, but I decided that I should come in anyway, in case you guys needed some extra help."

"You did not read it, did you?"

"Yea, I never read it. So should I go home then?"

"Yes, please."

I turned back, feeling rather defeated, and drove back home.

Upon arriving at the entrance of my house, I saw Kate through the windows. It looked like she was wiping the windows down. I walked through the front door and placed my stuff down in the closet. She was wearing her old, pink, buttoned up shirt and she wore her old boots. The only other time she wore this attire was when she was either painting, or cleaning intensely.

"Hi. What are we doing here?"

"Oh, wow! You scared me. I am cleaning the windows, you are more than welcome to join me. You may want to take off that really fancy, unnecessarily expense suit though."

I rolled my eye and laughed. I figured that if I was not going to work, I might as well help Kate to get the house in order.

"However, before we do that, please do be kind enough to explain why you are not at work."

"Apparently, Mike has given me the weekend off so that we can get settled in."

"Wow. That is generous of him. That is perfect, now you can help me clean this place. It is as if no one has been here in decades."

She was not wrong. The house did look like it was unoccupied for a seriously long amount time. There was cobwebs on the corners of the roof, dust on every fan blade and windowsill and the doors creaked from the lack of both usage and oil in the hinges.

"Fine, I will be more than delighted to help. However, please do allow me to excuse myself, so that I may change into something both more comfortable and more appropriate for the occasion I seem to have fallen into."

Kate spins around with dust covering most of her face. Her smile beamed brightly.

"Listen here Mister, just because you got promoted to Chief Executive Officer, it does it does not grant you the permission to speak funny vocabulary and get all smart with me. It also most definitely will not get you out this 'occasion you seem to have fallen into'."

We both stared at each other before we exploded with laughter. I exited the room so that I could change into my old clothes and join Kate in cleaning this house. Kate wanted to have this house spotless before tonight, so that we could go sight - seeing the next day.

I walked up the stairs towards the bedroom. I undressed myself out of the suit and placed it back in the bag it had come in. I placed the bag back into the cupboard and slipped into a more relaxing and comfortable attire.

I jogged back down the stairs towards the living room and saw that Kate had finished dusting the living room area. She was now wiping the dishes clean. She now looked slightly annoyed with me.

"Hey, what is with the face?" I questioned in a humorous manner.

Kate slapped the cup on the table and stared right into my soul.

"I am beginning to think that you do not want to help me."

"Why is that babe?"

"You were gone for so long!"

"Okay, okay. I am sorry! What are we doing now?"

I hugged her from behind and I dispossessed her of the cup. I placed it on the kitchen cabinet.

"Miles Roberts! What on Earth do you think you are doing?"

"Shhh! Do not worry. I Can sense that you are tired. Let us enjoy our new house for a minute."

Kate was a bit reluctant to join me but I held her in my grasp. I spun her around making her twirl, before finally I caught her in my arms. She panted out of excitement and I saw the twinkle in her eyes begin to develop once more.

"May I have this dance Milady?"

"But of course dear sir!"

She let out a laugh. It was the first time in a long time that I heard her purely enjoy herself. We danced in the kitchen for hours. We laughed and danced with each other, chasing each other around the kitchen. Eventually, we were seriously burnt out from all that dancing. We both fell onto the couch and we let out a sigh. She let herself slip into my arms and we sat there relaxing on the couch.

"Wow! That was amazing. I have not had that much fun in a long time!" Kate was still gasping for air as she closed her eyes and began to relax herself.

"I know right. I really enjoyed that. I can not wait for tomorrow now?"

Kate sprung up and looked me in the eyes.

"Tomorrow? What is happening tomorrow?"

"Unbelievable! I am disgusted that you have forgotten what is happening tomorrow!"

Kate rolled her eyes and sighed.

"Please tell me."

"Do not you remember? Carnival, shopping, malls, fairs. The total sight seeing package!"

"Oh yes! Wow. That does sound amazing!"

We both laid in each others arms for a few minutes and enjoyed the peace. After a few moments had gone pass, Kate had gotten up and walked towards the kitchen.

"Hey, where you going?"

"Well, we still have an entire house to clean up, now don't we Mister?"

She signaled her eyes, which implied that she wanted me to help her.

"Fine! I am on my way."

"You take the cups and I will take the plates. Make sure they are spotless. I do not want to find a plate with even a spec of dust on it."

"Since when did you get so bossy."

I chuckled to myself before I realized that she stared at me with one hand on her hip. She had her head titled to one side.

"I am sorry."

"Good. Now, less talking and more cleaning. Remember..."

We said the next words in unison.

"Not a spec of dust!"

"I know, I know."

We laughed together while we cleaned.

We cleaned for so long that eventually, the sun had set beyond the horizon.

We both were now exhausted. I decided that should get in the shower and have a relaxing hot bath. I sat there in the shower and pondered on the excitement that awaited us in the days ahead. It seemed like it was going to be a good life, one I could be proud of. Kate seemed to be much more excited that she was before we left the old house and I do not blame her. This house did seem practically perfect to raise a family. And you know what, even with all my speculations about this place, it was indeed rather perfect after all.
