It was during rainy season and various flowers had bloomed. It was a beautiful sight to behold after a long dry spell. There were blue, yellow, red and white flowers. The petals of some flowers had withered and dropped to the ground. One of Mary's favorite fruits was the wild berry, which were in plenty.Faith and Mary always spent time on the way home picking them and also played with the butterflies that had invaded the area. The butterflies' wings created a spectral view as they flapped in the air.
The path they took everyday was so muddy that they kept wiping their feet on the wet grass. From where they were, they could see herds of cattle grazing on the plains in the distance. There was no need to move them far afield because there was plenty of grass around the manyattas.Mary's father, Joseph, herd was grazing near their home. They passed some goats feeding on shrubs from a thicket nearby. Some had stretched themselves upright on their hind legs tried to reach upper shoots.
Cows and goats were their main source of livelihood and a man's worth was determined by the number of livestock one has. Their community was patriarchal for all animals, women and children were man's property.Women had no right to own property.Their work was to take care of the man, his children and his animals.Faith and Mary parted at the spot to their different manyattas.
