Elena woke to sunlight slicing across the silk sheets. Not her sheets. The penthouse smelled like fresh coffee and Alex’s cologne, something woodsy and expensive that lingered in the air. She sat up fast. Heart knocking against her ribs. The king bed felt too big. Too personal. Last night’s conversation still sat heavy in her chest.
She touched her mother’s locket. Cool metal against warm skin. A reminder.
A soft knock came at the door.
"Breakfast is ready," Alex called through the wood. His voice carried that same low command from the phone call. "We have an event tonight. Need to get you settled first."
Elena pulled on a simple blouse and skirt. Professional enough. Safe. When she stepped into the open kitchen he stood at the stove. Shirt unbuttoned at the top. Sleeves rolled up. The scar above his left eyebrow caught the light for a second. He slid a plate across the marble island without looking up.
"Morning wife," he said. Dry. Almost teasing.
"Do not call me that yet," she replied. She sat. Forked some eggs. They tasted better than hospital cafeteria food ever had.
"Practice makes it real." His eyes traced her slowly. Not obvious. But she felt it. "Stylist arrives in an hour. We need you looking like the kind of woman I cannot keep my hands off."
Heat crept up her neck. She took another bite to hide it. "This whole thing still feels like a bad dream I cannot wake from."
"You will get used to it." He leaned on the counter. Close enough that she caught the faint scent of his aftershave. "Tell me something real, Elena. Why fight so hard for that hospital? Most people would have walked away."
She met his gaze. "It was my mother’s. She built it from nothing after my father nearly destroyed us. When he went down in that fraud mess, everything fell on me. I fix things. That is what I do." Her fingers found the locket again. Twisted it once.
Alex nodded. Something flickered behind his eyes. Soft for half a second. Then the wall returned. "I understand fixing what fathers break. Mine left plenty of damage too."
Silence stretched between them. Not uncomfortable exactly. Charged. Every small movement felt louder. The way his fingers tapped the counter. The way she crossed her legs under the island.
Later the stylist arrived with racks of clothes. Elena tried on a deep green gown. It hugged her waist. Dipped low at the front. She stepped out of the dressing area.
Alex sat on the couch. Watch adjusted once. Then again. "Turn," he said. Voice rougher than before.
She turned slowly. The fabric whispered against her thighs. His eyes darkened. Traveled the length of her.
"Perfect," he murmured. "Tonight everyone will believe you are mine."
The charity gala was loud. Lights. Cameras flashing. Alex kept his hand low on her back the entire night. Warm. Possessive. Fingers spread like he needed the contact. When his uncle Richard approached with a sharp smile, the tension shifted.
"So this is the mysterious new wife," Richard said. His eyes flicked over Elena. "Convenient timing, Alex. Especially with that old crash still raising questions in certain circles."
Elena felt Alex’s fingers tighten on her waist. She bit the inside of her cheek.
"She is exactly who I need," Alex answered smoothly. But his body had gone rigid beside her.
Richard leaned in. "Hope she knows what she signed up for. Some secrets have a way of coming out."
The words landed heavy. Elena’s pulse quickened. She pressed closer to Alex without thinking. Her breast brushed his arm. He glanced down at her. Something raw passed between them.
As they left the gala and climbed into the town car, the silence felt thick. The driver pulled into traffic. City lights streaked past the windows.
Alex turned to her. "That kiss we practiced earlier. We may need it for real soon."
Elena’s breath caught. "Right now?"
His hand found her knee. Not demanding. Testing. "If it helps sell the story."
She looked at him. The scar. The set of his jaw. The way his thumb moved small circles on her leg. Heat pooled low. She leaned in first this time. Their mouths met. Soft at the start. Then deeper. His hand slid higher on her thigh. Gripped. She tasted whiskey and restraint on his tongue. Her fingers curled into his shirt. Breasts pressed against his chest. A small sound escaped her throat.
They broke apart breathing hard. Foreheads almost touching.
"That," Alex said quietly. "Was not all acting."
Elena looked away. Cheeks warm. Body aching in places she did not want to admit. "Do not flatter yourself." But her voice came out unsteady. The locket felt hot against her skin.
The car stopped at the penthouse. As they stepped inside Alex’s phone lit up again. He read the message. Face hardened.
Elena noticed. "What is it?"
He looked at her. Eyes darker now. Dangerous. "Uncle Richard. He knows more about you than he should. About the crash that took my fiancée years ago."
Her stomach dropped. She touched the locket again. The weight of secrets pressed between them.
Alex stepped closer. Hand cupping her face this time. Thumb brushing her lower lip. "Whatever he thinks he knows, we face it together now. No running."
Elena’s heart hammered. His touch burned. Part of her wanted to pull away. Another part wanted to lean in and let the fire take everything.
The trap felt tighter tonight. And for the first time, she was not sure she wanted loose.
Alex’s phone buzzed again. Another message. He read it. Then looked at Elena with new intensity. "He has proof you were there that night. In the ER. Tell me the truth, Elena. Right now." His fingers stayed on her face. The air crackled with everything unsaid.
