Alex kept his fingers on Elena’s face a second longer than necessary. The message from his uncle burned in his mind. His thumb brushed her lower lip once before he dropped his hand. The penthouse lights cast long shadows across the marble floor.
"He has proof you were there that night," Alex said again. Voice low. Controlled. "In the ER. Tell me the truth, Elena. Right now."
Elena stepped back. Her back hit the edge of the couch. She touched her locket. Twisted it hard between her fingers. Her pulse hammered under the thin gold chain. "I do not know what you are talking about."
"You do." Alex followed. Not crowding her exactly. But close enough that she felt the heat from his body. "The car crash. My fiancée. You were the resident on duty. My uncle sent photos. Hospital records with your name on them."
She bit the inside of her cheek. The familiar sting grounded her. "It was years ago. I was a junior resident. We tried everything. She did not make it." Her voice cracked just a little. "I did not know who she was to you. Not until later."
Alex’s jaw tightened. He adjusted his watch without thinking. Once. Twice. The scar above his eyebrow stood out under the light. "And you never thought to mention it? Before you signed the contract? Before you moved into my bed?"
"I did not connect the names at first." Elena looked away. Her fingers still played with the locket. "When I did, it was too late. The debts were crushing me. My brother needed protection. The hospital needed saving." She met his eyes again. "Would you have offered the deal if you knew?"
He did not answer right away. The silence stretched thick between them. His gaze dropped to her mouth for a beat. Then back up. "I do not like secrets, Elena. Not in business. Not in my house."
"This is not your house," she shot back. "It is a cage we both stepped into."
Alex moved closer. His hand came up. Not touching her face this time. Resting on the back of the couch beside her head. Caging her without closing in. "Tell me what happened that night. All of it."
Elena exhaled slow. Her breasts rose and fell with the breath. The green gown from the gala still clung to her curves. "She came in critical. Multiple fractures. Internal bleeding. We worked on her for hours. I was the one who called the time of death." Her voice softened. "I remember her face. She fought hard."
Something raw flickered across Alex’s expression. He looked away toward the windows. The city lights glittered below like nothing had changed. But everything had.
"I blamed the hospital for years," he said quietly. "Thought they missed something."
"They did not." Elena reached out without thinking. Her fingers brushed his forearm. Muscle tensed under her touch. "Sometimes people do not make it. No matter what we do."
He caught her wrist. Not hard. But firm. His thumb pressed against her pulse point. "And now you are here. In my home. Sleeping in my bed. Is this guilt? Or just survival?"
"Both." She did not pull away. The heat from his skin traveled up her arm. Settled low in her belly. "I signed because I had no choice. But I stayed tonight because..."
"Because?" His voice dropped lower. He stepped in. Their bodies almost touched.
"Because part of me wants to know what this fire between us really is." Her free hand came up. Fingers resting lightly on his chest. Feeling the steady beat under the shirt. "Even if it burns us both."
Alex’s breath hitched. He leaned down. Forehead almost touching hers. "You are dangerous, Elena Voss."
"So are you."
The moment stretched. Heavy. Then Elena pulled back first. She moved toward the hallway. Toward the bedroom. Alex followed.
Inside the room she kicked off her heels. The gown felt too tight now. Too revealing. She reached for the zipper at her back. Struggled.
"Here." Alex stepped behind her. His fingers found the zipper. Pulled it down slow. The fabric parted. Cool air hit her skin. His knuckles brushed her spine. Deliberate.
She shivered. "Thank you."
He did not step away. His hands settled on her shoulders. Warm. Heavy. "There is a locked drawer in the nightstand. Old photos. You want truth? Go look."
Elena turned. The gown slipped down her arms. She caught it before it fell completely. Held it against her chest. She crossed to the nightstand. The drawer opened with a small key he handed her.
Inside lay photos. His fiancée smiling. Another of the car wreckage. One showed Elena in scrubs. Younger. Exhausted. Standing outside the ER.
"You kept these," she whispered.
"I could not let it go." Alex stood behind her again. Closer now. His chest brushed her bare back. "Until tonight. Seeing you hold that locket. Hearing your voice crack when you talked about her." His hands settled on her waist. Fingers spreading over the silk slip she wore underneath. "It changes things."
Elena leaned back into him without meaning to. Her body fit against his. Heat built where they touched. "What happens now?"
"Now we stop pretending this is only a contract." His mouth brushed her ear. "But I still need full truth. No more hiding."
She turned in his arms. The gown slipped lower. Her breasts pressed against his chest. Only thin fabric between them. "No more hiding."
Their eyes locked. Breathing synced. Heavy. The air crackled with everything still unsaid. With the pull that had been building since that first phone call.
Alex’s hand came up. Cupped her jaw. Thumb tracing her lower lip again.
Elena’s heart raced. Part of her wanted to run. The bigger part wanted him to close the distance. To finally feel what those hands could do when they stopped holding back.
The drawer stayed open behind them. Old photos watching. Secrets slowly cracking open under the penthouse lights.
Alex’s phone vibrated on the nightstand. Another message from Uncle Richard. He glanced at it. His body went rigid against hers. "He is coming here. Tonight. Says he has more proof about your father’s connection to the crash." His fingers tightened on her waist. Eyes dark with new danger. "Whatever happens next, you stay right here with me."
