Midnight Reckoning

944 Words
Kiara stared at her phone long after the call ended. The hospital roof. Midnight. Alone. Her fingers trembled as she slipped the device into her pocket. Alex watched her from the driver’s seat. The city lights flashed across his face as they drove through Manhattan. "They want me on the roof," she said quietly. "Alone. Or someone else dies." Alex’s hands tightened on the steering wheel. His jaw clenched. The scar above his eyebrow stood out sharp. "You are not going alone." He reached over. Squeezed her thigh. Fingers digging in possessively. "We do this together. No more separating." She placed her hand over his. "They said someone we both love will die. What if it is your sister? Or my brother again?" He pulled the car into the underground parking of the penthouse. Killed the engine. Turned to her. His eyes burned in the dim light. "Then we fight smarter. But I am not letting you walk into a trap by yourself." Inside the penthouse, the tension followed them like a shadow. Kiara paced the living room. The locket bounced against her chest with every step. Alex watched her from the couch. Suit jacket discarded. Shirt sleeves rolled up. "Come here," he said. Voice low. Commanding. She stopped. Walked over. He pulled her onto his lap. Straddling him. His hands settled on her hips. Gripped tight. "You are shaking." "I am scared," she admitted. Fingers tracing the scar above his eyebrow. "For the first time in years, I have something real. You. Us. And now they want to take it." His thumb brushed her lower lip. "They will not." He kissed her. Slow at first. Then deeper. Tongue sweeping in. Claiming. His hands slid under her dress. Up her thighs. Found bare skin. "Let me remind you who you belong to tonight." Kiara moaned into his mouth. Rocked against him. Felt him harden beneath her. "Yes. Please." He stood with her in his arms. Carried her to the bedroom. Laid her on the bed gently this time. Stripped her slowly. Dress. Bra. Panties. Every piece of clothing removed with deliberate care. His eyes devoured her. Dark. Hungry. "You are beautiful," he murmured. Kissing down her body. Neck. Breasts. Stomach. Lower. He spread her legs. Mouth finding her center. Tongue stroking. Sucking. Two fingers pushing inside her. "Alex..." She arched. Fingers fisting the sheets. Hips rolling against his face. "Do not stop." He did not. Licked and sucked until she came hard. Crying out. Body shaking. Then he moved up. Kissed her. Let her taste herself on his tongue. Entered her in one deep thrust. They moved together. Slow. Intense. Forehead to forehead. Breathing the same air. Every thrust deep. Grinding. His hand pinned her wrist above her head. The other gripped her hip. "I love you," he whispered against her lips. The words slipped out raw. Unplanned. "Even if everything burns tomorrow." Kiara’s eyes filled with tears. She wrapped her legs tighter around him. "I love you too. God, I love you." They came together. Quiet. Intense. Holding each other like the world outside might break them apart. Afterward, they lay tangled. His hand stroking her back. Her head on his chest. "We need a plan," she said softly. "For midnight." Alex nodded. "My men will surround the building. Hidden. You go up. I stay close. If anything feels wrong, you signal. One word." She kissed his chest. "Okay." Midnight came too fast. The hospital roof was cold. Wind whipped around them. Kiara stood near the edge. Heart hammering. Alex waited in the shadows below. Watching. Ready. A figure stepped out from behind the air conditioning unit. An older woman. Alex’s mother. Elegant even in the darkness. "You came," she said. Voice carrying on the wind. "Good." Kiara lifted her chin. "Where is the threat? What do you want?" The woman smiled. Thin. Cold. "I want my son back. Away from you. Your father and I had plans. Big ones. The crash was only the beginning." Kiara’s stomach dropped. "You killed that girl. Alex’s fiancée." "For the empire." The woman stepped closer. "And now you are in the way. Leave him. Take the money I offer. Or watch everyone you love suffer." A sound behind Kiara made her turn. Two men stepped out. Guns drawn. "Alex!" she shouted. Gunshots echoed. Chaos erupted. Alex’s men rushed the roof. Shouts. Fighting. One of the attackers grabbed Kiara. Pressed a gun to her side. Alex appeared like a shadow. Fought his way through. Punched the man holding her. Pulled her behind him. "Stay behind me," he growled. His mother watched. Calm. "You choose her over blood?" "I choose her over everything," Alex said. Voice steel. A final gunshot rang out. One of the attackers fell. The others ran. Alex’s mother disappeared into the chaos. Kiara clung to him. Breathing hard. "She got away." Alex held her tight. "But we are alive. Together." They made it back to the car. Adrenaline still pumping. As they drove away, Kiara’s phone buzzed. A new message. A photo. Her brother. Safe. But tied to a chair. Uncle Richard standing beside him with a smile. "Final warning. Divorce him. Or your brother dies at dawn." Kiara showed Alex the photo. Tears in her eyes. Alex’s hand tightened on the wheel. "We end this tonight." As they reached the penthouse, the elevator doors opened to chaos. Mia stood there. Bleeding from a cut on her forehead. "Uncle Richard... he took Mom. And he says if you do not sign the divorce papers by sunrise, both our mothers die." Mia looked at Kiara. "He knows everything about the night of the crash. Everything."
