ELLA'S POV
My feet hit each step like drum beats as Eve and I walked down the stairs. Below us, whispers filled through the crowd.
Thump-thump!
Thump-thump!... my heart was so loud, I swear everyone could hear it echoing off the walls. Eve's shoulder brushed mine, warm and steady, but I couldn't shake off the hundred eyes burning into my skin.
I looked at Eve. God, how did she do it? Her face was peaceful like all these eyes were just a gentle breeze on her cheeks. I wished I had that kind of calm in me.
Suddenly, a warm hand slipped into mine. I was startled, I looked up to find Cole standing there, flashing that movie-star smile of his.
"Keep breathing like that and you'll pass out," he said, laughing out loud. But his eyes were kind, watching me carefully.
