Chapter 11

I closed the door slowly and rested against it for a moment, a long breath slipping out of me before I could stop it. The hallway outside had gone quiet again. Too quiet. But somehow… I could still feel him there. Even without seeing him, I knew Vaelor hadn’t gone far. Men like him didn’t really relax. Didn’t really switch off. They stayed alert. Watching. Listening. And for some reason, that thought settled deep in my chest and refused to leave. I pushed myself away from the door and walked further into my room. My heels clicked softly against the floor before I kicked them off near the bed without caring where they landed. God, I was tired. Now that I was alone again, the whole night came rushing back at once. The club. The argument. The way he kept telling me no like it was the simplest thing in the world. I grabbed a loose nightshirt and shorts before disappearing into the bathroom. A few minutes later, I came back out with damp skin and messy hair, too exhausted to care about anything anymore. I dropped onto the bed, reached for my phone, and immediately called Lyssara. The line rang. Once. Twice. Nothing. I frowned and called again. Still nothing. Even the third call went unanswered. I let my head fall back dramatically against the pillow. “Oh, she’s still angry,” I muttered under my breath. Honestly… I couldn’t even blame her. The night had ended badly. I stared at my screen for another second before tossing the phone beside me. “It’s fine. I’ll call her in the morning.” That was the last thing on my mind before sleep dragged me under completely. Knock. Soft. Far away. I frowned in my sleep and shifted slightly. Then another knock came. Louder this time. My eyes slowly forced themselves open as I stretched beneath the blanket, still half asleep and confused. Who was knocking this early? I rubbed my eyes tiredly and pushed myself off the bed, my body still heavy from last night. Another knock. “I’m coming…” I mumbled sleepily. I walked toward the door without even checking myself first. Big mistake. The moment I pulled the door open— Vaelor stood there. Tall. Still. Already dressed for the day. For one brief second, his eyes lifted normally to mine— Then instantly dropped. His entire body went stiff. And he turned his head away so fast that it genuinely confused me. I blinked at him slowly. “What happened?” His jaw tightened immediately. “Miss..” His voice sounded strained now. “Your.. your shirt.” Confused, I looked down. And my heart almost stopped. “Fuck.” My nightshirt had slipped down without me noticing. One side completely open. My breast exposed. My n****e visible. Heat rushed into my face so fast it burned. “s**t—” I grabbed the fabric immediately and pulled it tightly against my chest. “Oh my God…” I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me alive. “I’m so sorry.” Vaelor still wasn’t looking at me. His face stayed turned away completely. “No, Miss,” he said quickly. “I’m the one who should apologize. I shouldn’t have looked.” “You barely even did,” I muttered, completely mortified. “I still saw something I wasn’t supposed to.” His voice stayed controlled, but I could hear how tight it sounded now. Like every word had to be carefully forced out. I swallowed hard. “It wasn’t your fault,” I admitted quietly. “I just woke up. I didn’t even check myself.” Silence settled between us. Awkward. Heavy. Then finally, slowly, his eyes lifted back toward me— But only to my face this time. “I came to check if you were alright,” he said quietly. “You came home upset last night.” Something about that softened me instantly. “I’m fine,” I said softly. “Really.” He nodded once. Professional again. Controlled again. But now that the embarrassment had eased a little… I noticed him properly. The black shirt he wore stretched across his chest every time he moved. His sleeves were rolled slightly, exposing strong forearms lined with faint veins. Even standing still, there was something unfairly attractive about him. And when he shifted his weight slightly— God. I hated the way my eyes dropped lower on their own. His waist. His back. The shape of him beneath the fabric. I bit the inside of my cheek immediately. Get it together, Zarelle. “I’ll leave you to rest now,” he said. I looked back up quickly. “Okay.” He gave a small nod before turning away. And I stood there shamelessly watching him walk down the hallway. Watching the slow movement of his shoulders. The firmness of his back. The calm way he carried himself after seeing me practically half naked. The moment he disappeared around the corner, I shut the door quickly and pressed my back against it. Then— I burst out laughing. Not a cute laugh. Not a soft laugh. Real laughter. “Oh my God…” I covered my face with both hands, laughing even harder now. “Oh my God, I’ve missed myself.” I slid down slightly against the door, still grinning like an i***t. “This man just saw my nipple.” The words alone made me laugh again. “I don’t even know if I should feel embarrassed or impressed.” Honestly? Maybe both. A few seconds later, I dropped onto the bed again, still smiling stupidly to myself. Then suddenly, I remembered my phone. I grabbed it quickly and frowned. Missed Call — Lyssara. 12:07 PM. My eyes widened. “This b***h called by 12PM?” A laugh escaped me under my breath. “She couldn’t even wait till morning? After all the drinks I had?” Still smiling, I pushed myself off the bed and headed back into the bathroom. I washed my face properly this time, brushed my teeth, then returned and dialed her number immediately. The first call rang out. The second connected. “You!” Lyssara’s voice exploded through the speaker instantly. “So now you remember your phone?” I rolled my eyes and dropped onto the bed again. “Girl, I was exhausted.” “I was angry!” “I noticed.” “No, seriously, Zarelle, I was so pissed off last night. That was embarrassing.” I sighed softly. “I know.” “No, because what was that?” she continued dramatically. “Your bodyguard practically treated us like children.” “Okay, breathe first,” I said with a small laugh. “Calm down.” “I am calm.” “You sound possessed.” That made her scoff loudly. I smiled and rubbed my forehead. “Look… I’m sorry for what happened. Vaelor was just trying to do his job.” “His job is stressful.” “I know,” I admitted. “But I talked to him.” That was technically half true. “And I’m sure it won’t happen again.” “It better not,” she grumbled. “Because I don’t like embarrassment.” I laughed softly. “Honestly, I should be the embarrassed one, not you.” That finally made her laugh a little too. “True,” she admitted. “You were the one arguing with him like a spoiled princess.” “I am a spoiled princess.” “Unfortunately.” We both laughed quietly. Then suddenly, I sat up straighter. “Actually… something happened this morning.” Her voice changed immediately. “What happened?” I bit my lip, already smiling again. “Bestie…” “What?” “I accidentally flashed Vaelor.” Silence. Complete silence. Then— “YOU WHAT?”
