CHAPTER 4 “He left me that note to brag that he has outsmarted me, the smug bastard,” I paced the outside of the compound, “What game is he playing? And why?” King shrugged, “Maybe he’s just trying to toy with you?” “It doesn’t make sense, what possible reason could he have that would stop me from killing him?” Jake sighed, “Minx, you’re going to drive yourself insane trying to understand this guy’s motives.” “King, find him.” “On it. For now, get some rest.” “We didn’t do much, I think we should pay a visit to some of the wolves before we even think of resting,” I said turning to once again begin pacing, “My focus is on Jesse, but we can’t forget the bigger picture here; the Lycans are trying to take over the world. If they succeed all hell will break loose. They will kill, they will treat the humans as slaves, we will have a pending dystopia on our hands.” King crossed his arms over his chest, “And once the rule, it will be even harder to stop them.” I nodded, “Exactly, which is why it’s so important for us to stop them before that happens.” Jake frowned, “Well if I was about to take over the world, I would have a strategy in place. Government buildings, rendering them helpless. Act as the saviour to the world, gain their trust. And then I would take over the government. Once there, well, you can imagine, I’d be a pretty damn good dictator,” of course he had to add his signature smirk. “Maybe you’re on the wrong side then, Jakey-boy,” King said, chuckling. “Okay, boys, enough of that. King, do we have any sightings?” “Nothing concrete. A few reports of suspicious-looking groups moving around.” “Okay, let’s split up. Each of us will take an area and check it out, speak to residents. See if we can spot any of the wolves or pick up a scent. Do not apprehend any of them. King, where are we going?” I had just arrived in a small village-like town, instantly picking up wolf scents. Spotting an elderly lady with long grey hair and a walking stick, I decided I would speak to her first. “Hi, Ma’am, do you live around here?” She looked up at me, regarding me with suspicion, “What’s it to you?” “I just want to ask you a few questions, my name is-” “I know who you are, you were on the news. I seen what you said about those nice people, and I don’t like you. Talking bad about good people the way you did.” I frowned and scrunched my face in confusion, “Good people? Look, I don’t think you understand, they are not good people. They are werewolves and they want to take over. They will destroy the world. They will kill you, humans.” The old woman scoffed, “You don’t know what you’re saying, girl. They have been here, they have given us things. They fixed the water and gave us food. No one cares about this place, but they do. They are making a change for the better and we need to accept it. When you get to my age you will understand that we have to learn to adapt for the better.” “Listen to me! They are tricking you! They will turn this world into a dystopia. There will be death and poverty, worse than anything you have ever seen.” “Perhaps for those who oppose the change. Those of us who are loyal will be looked after greatly.” I sighed, beginning to get annoyed with the woman, “Are you senile? Is that it?” “You need to leave here.” “No, I’m going to find some people who aren’t stupid! People who understand the danger in this.” I walked away feeling rather angry, and a small part of me wanted to break something, and maybe smack some sense into the old woman. Heading over to a door of a small brick house I knocked harder than needed until the door was opened by a young man. “Hi, I'm-” “Harley Alarick. Yeah, anyone who has a T.V knows who you are. What do you want here?” “Have you seen anyone suspicious?” “You’re looking for those wolves. They’ve been here making promises, no one is going to sell them out, they’ve fixed our water, they’re helping us set up a farming system for food. They’re making a difference.” I ran a hand over my face, “Don’t you get it? They are only doing this so that people think they are the good guys. They don’t care about any of you humans. They are going to blindside you all, they will rule with an iron fist. I am a werewolf and I know the person behind this, he killed people. He drugged me. He murdered two of my friends, all because he couldn’t get the power of being in charge of the Pack. Does that sound like someone whose side you would want to be on?” “Look, lady, you aren’t going to get us against them, I suggest you leave. You are not welcome here.” Shaking my head, I walked away. I couldn’t reason with these people. Jesse had made them promises that he had no intention of keeping, but these people were desperate for it to be true. My phone vibrated and I answered when I saw King’s name. “King, talk to me.” “We have a problem.” “Same here. He’s brainwashed them into trusting-” I paused when I heard a thundering bang in the background, “What the hell was that?” “Bombing. I got here too late, there’s very little left and they are taking whatever is. I have to go and try to stop this.”  The phone went dead and I dialled Jake's number. “Hey, Minx,” he paused and I heard a thud, “I’m a little busy at the moment, can you hold?” “Uh, what-” another thud, and shouting, “Jake, what are you doing?” “Well-” thud, “I’m busy beating up some wolves.” I groaned, “I told you not to apprehend any of them!” Of course, he wasn’t listening or responding while I waited not so patiently, listening to the fight continuing. I carried on walking, phone to my ear in the hopes that Jake wouldn’t get himself killed. As I stepped out into the street, a new scent hit me. A wolf.  Glancing around, I tried to figure out who it was that the scent came from. There were only a few people around but none gave off the werewolf vibe. “Minx, you still there?” “Yeah,” I scanned my surroundings, “You done? Everyone here loves them, thinks they are here to help. But I may have found one of the wolves.” “These guys are crazy. The one almost threw us both off of a roof now.” “Yeah, King says...Wait, you had me on hold while you were almost thrown from the roof?” “Well, yeah. Where are you?” And then I spotted him; he had to be a werewolf. “I’ll call you back,” hanging up, I stalked over to the one I suspected of being a wolf, he had long dark hair and an overall exotic look to him, “Don’t move.” He smiled at me, his gold eyes twinkling, “Ah,” he eyed me up and down, “Long legs, Goddess beauty. You must be the Minx.” I pursed my lips and rolled my eyes, “Flattery will get you nowhere, wolf. You one of Jesse’s boys?” I knew he probably wasn’t because I picked up no scent of Jesse. “Jesse? Really? Do I look like the type to be working for that immature little boy?” He didn’t, he looked like the type to be his boss and take no orders, “You don’t, but stranger things have happened. Why are you here?” Grabbing me roughly by the arm, he pulled me into a darkened alleyway, “Because these are my people and I will not allow them to be slaughtered.” “You’re people? You’re the first wolf I’ve come across here.” “That’s because they are not wolves, I was born a human. Here with these people. I only shifted after the age of thirty when I was mated to an Alpha’s daughter.” I relaxed slightly, “Look, I want to believe you because we have a similar origin. But why would you allow them to think that they can trust Jesse?” “They do not trust Jesse! They have never even met him, they trust me and my wolves.” I leaned against the wall, lightly banging my head back against it, “Oh my Goddess. I came here hoping to find a lead on Jesse, and here I find you.” He chuckled, “So sorry to disappoint you, Alpha.” “Look, just, keep them safe. Jesse is screwing everything up, and I will stop him, but by the time that I do, it may be too late for a lot of people.” “You will never stop him alone, you need help. And when you are ready, you know where to find me. I have hundreds of wolves ready and available to take them down, you just say when.” “Thank you. I will be in touch.” He nodded before walking away, and I let out a long breath. Shaking my head, I sent Jake a text with King's location and asked him to meet me there. I found both Jake and King sitting on a broken water decoration. Around them were broken burning buildings, a stench surrounding us all. I was just about to sit when my eye caught something. Turning, I watched a spirit fly up into the clouds, and I frowned, suddenly, I realized something. “Oh my... Why have I not seen Rivens spirit? In the two years that he’s been gone, I have never seen his spirit.” Jake and King both exchanged glances before turning to me, and I could see that both of them were equally confused. “You think he’s still alive?” Asked Jake, his eyes full of hope. “I don’t know. If he was dead, I would have seen his spirit by now.” Suddenly Jake clapped his hands together, “And that is why Jesse thinks that you won’t kill him, he wants to use Riven as leverage. But how the hell has he been keeping him for so long? We both know that Riven would do everything in his power to get back to you and those kids.” I shrugged, “I don’t know, Jake, but we need to find out if I’m right about this. And if I am, I  need to find Riven.” Jake placed a hand on my shoulder, “We need to find him. If he is still alive you better know that I will do everything I can to help you bring him back. He became a true friend to me.” King cleared his throat, “Uh, excuse me, I’m all for finding your dearly beloved, but we still have the problem of needing to stop the impending doom of the world.” “Which I haven’t forgotten, but if we can find Riven, he would be able to help us put a stop to this madness.” Jake nodded in agreement, “She’s right. Riven would be a huge asset in this. And aside from Minx, there isn’t any other wolf that I would rather have on my side.” I took a step back, my heart sitting in my throat at the thought of Riven being alive, I wanted to believe that he was, but at the same time, I was scared to allow myself to get my hopes up only to be wrong. That was something that I wouldn’t be able to handle. Could he still be alive? Was it even possible? Drowning out their discussion I began walking away, my feet numb, my whole body tingling as I tried to make sense of my thoughts. It had been two years since I had seen Riven, the love of my life, my mate. Why hadn’t he tried to find us? Did he even still want me? Or had he given up? My heart ached at the thought of Riven rejecting me. I so badly wanted him to be alive, but a part of me was anxious and scared of what that would mean for him and me. A/N: What do you all think about the newest revelation? Do you want Riven back? I’m kidding, I know we all want Riven back. Stay tuned for some wolf action coming soon! Also, please comment and tell me what you like about the story, and let me know what you would like to see more of as I am still writing this book and can add some things in!
