The ancient wolf’s howl reverberated through the crumbling cave, each tremor on the ground signaling that time was running short. Selene’s heart pounded in her ears while she and Lyra raced further into the tunnel, with stones tumbling around them. The air was heavy with dust and the strong smell of decomposition, making every breath difficult.
“Quickly!” Selene hurriedly pushed Lyra forward while the cave walls continued to quiver and break apart.
The ancient wolf’s growl behind them increased, drawing nearer, its presence akin to a looming shadow pursuing them in the tunnel. Selene’s thoughts were racing. It was necessary for them to locate an exit immediately.
Upon reaching the narrow tunnel’s end, Selene noticed a faint glimmer of moonlight up ahead. Hope glimmered in her chest.
“There!” she exclaimed, indicating the direction of the light.
The trail led to a tiny open space just outside the cave, illuminated by soft moonlight. The night sky extended over them, a limitless space filled with stars and darkness. They were very near to getting away, but Selene was aware that the old wolf was not too far away.
Lyra tripped while running, her legs trembling from tiredness. “Selene, I’m unable to—”
Selene caught her just in time to prevent her from falling, speaking with a resolute tone. We must continue to advance. Keep going.
Lyra weakly nodded, determined to continue, despite Selene noticing the fear and tiredness in her eyes. They had experienced many challenges, and now they were confronting an age-old force that was difficult for them to comprehend.
As soon as they arrived at the entrance, a loud crash reverberated from behind them. Selene looked just in time to witness the huge wolf rush through the tunnel, its eyes shimmering with an unearthly glow. Growling loudly, the creature’s large body dominated the area with a primal sound.
“Proceed!” Selene shouted and pushed Lyra towards the door.
Just as Lyra was about to move, the wolf suddenly leaped ahead, its huge claws cutting through the air. Selene quickly positioned herself in front of Lyra to protect her from the wolf, using her own claws to attack the beast in a desperate bid to keep It at bay. The power inside her surged once more, even stronger, coursing through her veins like a raging fire.
The Impact caused her to stumble back, but she quickly regained her balance, her gaze locking onto the wolf’s glowing eyes. The ancient energy within her beat strongly, encouraging her to battle, to protect. The power she had experienced before came back, yet now it was better managed, more concentrated. She felt the intense energy growing within her, waiting to be released.
Selene stood her ground as the wolf growled, ready to attack once more. The ancient magic of the cave sensed her presence, as though the earth acknowledged her as more than just a solitary werewolf.
“I have no idea what you are,” Selene snarled, her voice hushed, “but you won’t be taking us.”
Taking a deep breath, Selene delved into the reservoir of power within herself, harnessing the unfamiliar energy that had been sparked. Her body shook as the electrical energy circulated within her, fizzing just under her surface. She was unsure about the method but felt compelled to continue.
The wolf attacked once more, but Selene was prepared this time. Raising her hand, she instinctively released a blast of pure energy from her palm, hitting the beast while it was in the air. The impact of the strike propelled the aged wolf into the cavern wall with a resounding thump.
Lyra was shocked, gasping with wide eyes fixed on Selene. “You…you utilized the ability.”
Selene looked at the fallen wolf, its huge body twitching but not getting up, causing her chest to rise and fall heavily. She could barely comprehend the recent turn of events. She had stumbled upon exactly what the council had been searching for – and she had no clue how she had achieved it.
Before she could answer Lyra, the ground shook once more, but with even greater intensity. The cave’s ceiling started collapsing seriously, with big pieces of stone falling as the ground collapsed. They had run out of time.
“Go for a run!” Selene yelled and took hold of Lyra’s arm, guiding her towards the exit.
They ran quickly across the open space, the old wolf’s quiet growl disappearing as the tunnel collapsed. There was an earthquake beneath them, but the outdoors was only a short distance away. Selene observed the forest ahead, the trees moving in the moonlit night as if guarding silently, anticipating their presence.
With a final rush of speed, they dashed out of the cavern and into the vast woods, right as the entrance crumbled in a haze of debris and rocks.
Everything was quiet for a brief period. The outside of the cave appeared calm and tranquil, with only the gentle rustling of the wind in the trees breaking the silence. Selene felt her heart racing in her chest, her thoughts swirling after the recent events.
She had stirred up something within her- something much stronger than she had ever envisioned. With the cave destroyed, she realized the situation was far from finished.
Selene looked at Lyra, who was struggling to catch her breath, her complexion ashen. “Where do we go from here?” She inquired, the tremor evident in her voice.
Selene nodded her head, still attempting to regain her breath. “We continue to progress.” The council will continue without ceasing. “They will seek me out, and they will seek this power.”
Lyra nodded despite the fear in her eyes. “We are unable to confront them by ourselves.”
A voice from the shadows reassured, “There is no need for us to do that.”
Selene whirled, her muscles tight, prepared for another confrontation. However, when the figure entered the moonlight, her heart stopped.
Marcus.
Marcus’ name.
His complexion was ashen, his frame drenched in blood, yet he remained on his feet. Just barely.
Selene hurriedly approached Marcus, whispering his name. “You are breathing.”
He offered her a bleak smile. “At the present moment.” However, we are facing more significant issues.
Selene’s heart tightened upon understanding his intention. The council had not finished yet. They had just started their search.
