Audrey blinked her eyes open, the harsh light above her casting a pale glow across the room. Her head throbbed a dull insistent ache that seemed to reach deep into her thoughts. She scanned the room her heart quickening as she took in her unfamiliar surroundings. Machines beeped rhythmically their sounds alien and unnerving. She reached for her abdomen instinctively her fingers brushing against the thin hospital gown but it was the man sitting at her bedside that froze her movements. His eyes were locked onto her dark with worry and something else; an emotion she couldn’t quite place.
