Chapter 5

ADAM'S POV "Aren't you concerned about the repercussions, sir? Axel's men are still on the loose," Jarek said, his voice laced with concern. "I'll handle it," I replied curtly, not looking up from the papers on my desk. "Sir, we need to discuss the—" "Not now, Jarek." He hesitated before nodding and leaving my study. I waited until the door closed before pouring myself a glass of scotch. I took a sip, letting the liquid burn down my throat as I gazed out the window. A week had passed since Audrey's escape. My plan had worked flawlessly as expected. She was safe in Canada with her aunt. Ready to start a new life. I should feel relieved. Instead, I felt...off. My wolf was restless. “What have you done Adam!” I growled internally. I took another sip, lost in thought. Drugging her water had been a test. Would she stay, or would she run? She chose freedom. I wanted her to have it. And she did, I was happy. But why did I feel this...emptiness? There was no reason for me to still concern myself with the girl anymore, at least I had gotten her away as I said so why was I still interested in her well-being? Over the last week since she left, I had been staying in my room. Why? I had done everything, made sure her escape would be easy, even lied to her that I'd be out to make her feel more at ease and I had stayed behind, sending only my men so that I could make sure she left if she wanted to Hell, I even had to convince her friend to act the part, it was something that I had done of my own will. Why did I feel regret now? No, this was stupid. She had a life and I saw her as a sister, no matter the stupid urge that had riled me up the other day. This is why I had been drinking a whole lot in the evenings like now. Sitting back down, I pulled out a cigarette and removed my lighter from my pocket, my gaze fixed on the cigarette as I tried to light it. A few sparks then I got it. Dropping the lighter on my table, I took a deep inhale of the smoke, the nicotine making my body tingle. I puffed out the smoke, holding the cigarette in one hand while using the other to unbutton the first few buttons of my shirt. My phone began to ring and damn it, I was contemplating throwing it out of the window, not liking how it was disturbing my peace and quiet. After a short while, I decided to pick up the call. “Yes, Enrico, what is it?” I said huskily down the line. “Well actually…” he paused. “You called at a f*****g wrong time and if you don't state your business in five seconds, consider your name written in my death note” I growled, my fingers flicking the burning cigarette stick. “After the consignment, everything has been settled. I wanted to inform you that we were able to put everything in place for what you said” I sat up in my chair, a bored look in my eyes as I stared at the door. “There was absolutely no reason for me to know that. The consignments from now on will be safe with that in place. From then on, not my f*****g business” I said coldly then hung up. I stared at the burning cigarette stick and I sighed. This was also useless. I threw the stub into a glass of water clenching the flames. Getting to my feet, I grabbed my phone, opened my apps, and stared at the red dot on the screen She hadn't taken off the chain yet but this still felt wrong. I should let go of her completely. There was a knock on the door and I groaned softly. f**k, was everyone just looking to get killed today. “Come in” The door opened and Jarek walked back in. “You again?” I asked irritated as I sat back down on my seat, slowly looking him over. He cleared his throat. “It's.. uh.. time for dinner.” I rolled my eyes at that, my hand reaching out to grab the gun on my table, noting how he followed that simple movement with his eyes. “What are you now? My maid? The maids' job is to tell me that, not you.” He refocused his gaze back on me and nodded his head. “I am aware of that sir. The maids said you… told them to leave quite forcefully.” “And?...” I drawled, watching my gun glint under the setting sun. “I just wanted to come to check if everything was fine. If you were fine.” “Perhaps something had happened to me in the space of an hour?” I said in a cold monotone that made him shuffle awkwardly on his feet. “No sir.” his voice had reduced a tempo at that point. “You're really pissing me off right now, Jerek.” I muttered, pausing the admiration of my gun to look at him again. He stiffened and I could see from his eyes that he was really thinking of hightailing it out of there. “Get the car ready. I'll be going to the shooting range this evening.” I informed him. His brows furrowed before he spoke up. “But it's quite late already…” I pointed the gun at him, my eyes flashing. “We could do it like last time if you pleased but this time… it'll be without the apple.” His eyes widened and he cleared his throat. “I'll get the car ready.” he said then he left my study. As soon as he left, I dropped my gun back with a slight noise and shut my eyes tightly. I had thought of something but I wasn't sure I wanted to do it. Eventually, I sighed and picked up my phone, dialing a number. The phone rang twice before the person picked up. “Hello?” “Stop the mission. Get you and your guys back.” I ordered before hanging up. I had assigned someone to watch her for a bit but now I think it was best to let her go. It was giving creepy and I couldn't continue like that. I would stop thinking about her and I hoped to the goddess that we never had to cross paths again. But wishes weren’t horses afterall, and only time would tell. For now, Bellasimo could fly free as a bird. So far her leg chain remained on her.
