“Nah.” Martin waved it off. “Stanton told me that rag-tag crew couldn’t hurl a rotten tomato at the president without missing, much less kidnap him, on Inauguration Day or any other day, for that matter. If it wouldn’t have ruined his reputation for sobriety, I suspect he would have laughed.”
The idea of War Secretary Stanton finding humor in any situation sent both men into fits of laughter. And after the Inauguration passed without incident, they laughed even more.
