After a twenty-four mile jaunt, John and Nettie, still disguised, arrived at Rouse’s Point. John wanted to get down but she clutched his arm. “No. Stay on the train. If you get off, we’ll only attract more curious onlookers and even possibly detectives. It’s essential that we keep moving ahead of them. We’ll be safely across the border almost as soon as we start.”
As John knew from previous trips, the train was divided into two sections at Rouse’s Point, one going across New York, the other headed for Montreal. He and Nettie arrived at the capital of British colonial government and debarked for the short trip to the St. Lawrence Hotel, the Canadian locus of Confederate Secret Service activity.
