Chapter 1
Serena Aiganym had arrived at work a few minutes before she was due to start her shift. She had been working at the restaurant, The Blue Moon, for three years now. As soon as she turned eighteen, she had started to look for a job. She had been unable to stay at the foster home she had lived in since she was eight. Heath had told her she wouldn’t be safe there with the way Mr. Morse kept looking at her.
Heath was the voice in her head. He had come to her on her tenth birthday. He had told her that he was there to protect her. She was to never tell anyone about him or he would be taken away. She wasn’t sure he was real at first, so why would she have told anyone? It took turn years with Heath to learn that he wasn’t just a voice in her head. He knew things about what was happening in the house, things he kept Serena from finding out about.
Just before she turned eighteen, Heath told her to look for a job. While out job searching one day, she had stumbled on the Blue Moon restaurant. After seeing the help wanted sign in the window she had gone inside and applied for the job. The owner of the restaurant, Mr. Sanders, had hired her on the spot.
“Serena!” she turned to the voice and found Mr. Sanders standing there.
“Good morning, Mr. Sanders,” she said.
“Good morning, Serena,” he said. “I wanted to let you know that I need you to wait for today's delivery. My son, Simeon, will be bringing it today.”
“Oh,” she said. “Is Jack alright?”
“He’s fine,” he said. “My second son, Simeon, has returned from college and will be taking over the restaurant soon.”
“Oh,” she said. “Does that mean you will be retiring?”
“Yep,” he said. “I’ll finally get to stay at home and do nothing all day!”
“Sounds like fun,” she said.
He laughed. “My son should be here sometime soon. So could you want in the back for him?”
“Of course,” she said. “Do you want me to take inventory while I wait?”
“That would be great,” he said.
Serena nodded and went into the back to start her task.
“I feel like something big is going to happen soon,” Heath said to her half an hour later.
“What do you mean?” she asked out loud. When she was alone she would talk to Heath out loud.
“I don’t know,” Heath said. “I’ve told you all that I can about wolfs and there mates and such. We’ve even researched this.”
“I know, Heath. You’ve done all that you can. Even though we both know I can’t turn into a wolf, you’ve done all you could.”
“I wish there was more that I could do for you. I feel something is going to happen soon. I need you to understand that I want what is best for you.”
“Are you leaving me?”
“I don’t know. I hope not. The Moon Goddess gave you to me for a reason.” He sigh. And then stilled. “Serena, a wolf approaches who is different.”
“Different how?”
“I don’t know.”
Just as Heath said this a man entered the back room. He seemed startled to find someone in the room.
“Hello,” Serena said, turning to face him. “I’m Serena.”
“I’m Simeon,” he said. He stared at her for a minute. He then looked to the side and said, “What? Why?”
“Are you alright?” she asked.
He looked at her and seemed confused. He shook his head before looking at her again.
“I’m fine,” he said. “I have the delivery that Dad ordered.”
“Of course,” she said. “I’ll help you.”
“No need,” he said. “I’ll bring it in and then we can put it away.”
She nodded and waited in the room as he left. She stood off to one side as he started to bring in the inventory that had been ordered. As he sat the first back down she went to open it. As she did so her hand touched his.
“I think he is your mate,” Heath said.
“What?” she asked.
Simeon looked at her before he turned and seemed to run out of the room.
“The one the Moon Goddess blessed us with,” Heath said. “I think he is our mate. I need to know for sure.”
“How do you plan to find out?” she asked.
“We need to kiss him,” Heath said.
She yelled, “Kiss him?” just as Simeon walked back into the room.
He dropped the box and looked at her.
“Do you want to kiss me as well?” he asked.
“What?” she asked.
“I want to kiss you,” he said.
