Chapter Two – The Encounter The forest grew denser the deeper Aria pushed, each step swallowed by the weight of silence. The air was heavy with the metallic tang of the blood moon, thick enough to taste on her tongue. Branches clawed at her arms, shadows stretched long across the ground, and somewhere far behind, Mira’s voice called her name. Aria ignored it. She moved as if guided, though she could not explain by what. The closer she drew to the heart of the woods, the sharper her senses became. Every crack of a twig, every flutter of a night bird’s wings made her pulse quicken. And beneath it all, there was another sound..so faint she wondered if she imagined it. The steady rhythm of breathing. Not human. Not quite beast. Something in between. Aria slowed her pace, bow raised. The string pressed against her cheek as she drew an arrow, eyes scanning the trees. Then she saw her. Selene. The stories had not lied. The Alpha stepped from the shadows with the kind of grace that no human could possess, her body lit by the blood moon above. She was taller than Aria expected, shoulders broad, posture straight, every movement carrying the quiet certainty of someone who had never bowed to anyone. Her hair spilled down her back in dark waves, catching red light in its strands. And her eyes..sharp, golden, and unblinking..locked onto Aria with a focus that made the air leave her lungs. Aria’s fingers tightened around the bowstring. Every instinct told her to release, to fire, to end this moment before it became something she could not control. But she froze. Selene tilted her head slightly, like a wolf studying prey. “You’re far from your village, little huntress.” Her voice was low, smooth, carrying a power that made Aria’s skin prickle. Aria forced her arms steady, though her heart was unsteady in her chest. “And you’re far too close to it.” The Alpha smiled faintly, though it wasn’t kindness. It was possession. “Do you think that bow will save you?” “I know it will.” Aria’s voice came out sharper than she felt. Selene took a step forward. Aria pulled the string tighter. Another step, and she would release. She swore she would. But Selene didn’t rush. She moved with the confidence of someone who knew the outcome long before the battle began. When she stopped, only a few paces separated them, the silver tip of Aria’s arrow aimed directly at her heart. “Go on,” Selene said softly. “Kill me.” Aria blinked. The words should have been a taunt, but the Alpha’s tone was something else..steady, certain, almost challenging. Her hand shook. Just slightly, but enough. Selene’s eyes narrowed. “You feel it, don’t you?” “Feel what?” Aria spat, though her throat tightened as she spoke. “The bond.” Selene’s voice dipped lower, steady as a drumbeat. “The pull that ties you to me.” Aria laughed, short and sharp. “You’re delusional.” Selene moved before Aria could react. One moment she was standing still, the next the bow was ripped from Aria’s grip, the arrow clattering uselessly to the ground. Selene’s strength was overwhelming; she pressed Aria against a tree with one hand, holding her wrist pinned above her head. Aria gasped, struggling, but Selene’s body blocked her escape, heat radiating from her like fire. “You can lie to yourself,” Selene murmured, her golden eyes burning into hers, “but your body knows. Your soul knows.” Aria tried to twist free, but every shift only brought her closer, until she could feel the Alpha’s breath against her cheek. “Let me go,” Aria demanded, though her voice betrayed her, more strained than commanding. Selene leaned in just enough that her lips hovered by Aria’s ear. “You are mine.” The words hit harder than any blade. Aria’s chest heaved, torn between fury and something deeper, something she could not name. Her instincts screamed to fight, but another part of her..the part she had buried for years..answered the claim with a shiver she could not stop. “No,” she whispered, as much to herself as to Selene. The Alpha studied her face for a long moment. Then she eased back, though her hand never fully released its hold. “You can deny it. That doesn’t change what is written in the blood moon.” Aria’s mind raced. She had spent her life hating wolves, training to kill them, believing they were nothing but beasts. Yet here stood one..no, not just one, the Alpha herself—who looked at her not with hunger, but with something far more dangerous: recognition. Selene finally let her arm drop, though she did not step away. Her presence filled the space between them, as if the forest itself bent around her. “You’ll come to understand,” Selene said, her tone calm, certain. “The bond doesn’t break. You can fight it, but it will only tighten its grip.” Aria snatched her bow from the ground, glaring. “I will never belong to you.” Selene’s lips curved, not in anger but amusement. “We’ll see.” The Alpha stepped back at last, melting into the trees with the ease of shadow itself. Within seconds, she was gone, leaving only silence behind. Aria stood frozen, her breath ragged, the weight of the moment pressing down on her chest. She wanted to tell herself she had imagined it, that the Alpha’s words meant nothing, that the strange pull in her chest was only adrenaline. But as she pressed a hand to her pounding heart, she knew better. Something had shifted. Something she could not undo. Mira’s voice called her name again, distant but urgent. Aria tightened her grip on the bow and forced herself to move, though every step felt heavier than the last. She had come into the forest to kill the Alpha. Instead, the Alpha had claimed her.
