Echoes on the Far Side
Synopsis
Following the faint distress signal emanating from the Moon’s far side, the crew embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the source. What they discover challenges everything they thought they knew about the anomaly—and humanity's role in shaping the cosmos.
Approaching the Unknown
The ship hurtles toward the dark side of the Moon, its sleek hull cutting through the silent void. The faint distress signal grows louder, though it remains garbled, fragmented. Every repetition sends chills down the crew’s spines.
“Ar’thelis, analyze the signal,” Naira commands, her voice steady despite the unease gripping her.
The AI responds, its tone uncharacteristically hesitant. “The signal is human in origin, but… old. Approximately 200 years. Its source appears to be beneath the lunar surface.”
Rohan frowns, his hands tightening on the controls. “Beneath? There’s nothing listed in the archives about a base down there.”
Anya scans the data streaming across her monitor. “If this signal is that old, it predates most of our advanced lunar exploration. Whatever’s down there has been forgotten for a long time.”
Naira stares out at the Moon’s surface, now looming closer. “We’re not here to speculate. We’re here to find answers. Bring us in for a landing.”
Touchdown on the Far Side
The ship descends slowly, its landing thrusters kicking up clouds of lunar dust. The Moon’s far side is a desolate expanse of craters and jagged rocks, untouched by sunlight or human presence for centuries.
The distress signal is stronger now, a rhythmic pulse that seems almost alive.
Anya secures her helmet as the crew prepares to disembark. “Atmospheric pressure stable. Gravity’s low, but manageable. Stay sharp—there’s no telling what we’re walking into.”
The hatch opens, and the crew steps onto the alien terrain, their boots crunching against the lunar regolith. The silence is deafening, broken only by their breathing and the occasional static of their comms.
“Signal source is directly ahead,” Ar’thelis guides them, its holographic form projected onto their visors. “Approximately 500 meters below the surface.”
Rohan peers into the distance, spotting what looks like a jagged crevice cutting through the ground. “Looks like that’s our way in. Let’s move.”
The Descent
The crew rappels into the crevice, their lights cutting through the oppressive darkness. The air grows colder, though the Moon’s atmosphere shouldn’t allow for such a phenomenon.
“This doesn’t make sense,” Anya mutters. “Temperature fluctuations like this shouldn’t be possible here.”
Naira feels a faint vibration through her gloves as she grips the rock wall. “Something’s active down here. Keep moving.”
The descent ends in a cavern—a massive, hollowed-out space that defies natural formation. The walls are lined with metallic structures, ancient yet faintly glowing with an unearthly light.
“What the hell is this?” Rohan whispers, his voice reverberating in the cavern.
Ar’thelis scans the area. “The materials here are not native to the Moon. This appears to be… a facility. Constructed, but abandoned long ago.”
The Source of the Signal
At the cavern’s center stands a massive console, its surface covered in intricate patterns that pulse faintly with the same rhythm as the distress signal.
“This is it,” Anya says, stepping cautiously toward the console. “This is what’s been calling us.”
As she approaches, the signal suddenly changes, its garbled distortion replaced by a clear voice:
“If… you’re hearing this… then you must stop it. The breach cannot be allowed to spread.”
The crew freezes, their hearts pounding.
“Who… who is that?” Rohan stammers, his voice shaky.
Ar’thelis processes the audio. “The voice belongs to Dr. Elias Varin—a lead scientist from the Luna-7 Expedition, dated 2097. He was declared missing, presumed dead.”
“Over two centuries ago?” Anya breathes, her hand hovering over the console. “How is this even possible?”
Naira’s voice cuts through the tension. “We’re not going to find answers by standing here. Activate the console.”
A Forgotten Warning
Anya touches the console, and the cavern comes alive. Lights streak along the walls, revealing holographic displays of star charts, energy signatures, and catastrophic simulations.
Dr. Varin’s voice echoes again, fragmented but urgent:
“We… thought we could contain it. The breach was small—manageable. But it grew. It learned. The Singularity isn’t just a phenomenon… it’s a parasite, and it’s spreading.”
The crew exchanges uneasy glances as the holograms show images of lunar scientists working frantically, their faces etched with fear.
Varin’s voice continues. “We tried to seal it here, to bury it deep where it couldn’t reach Earth. But now… it’s awake again. If you’re hearing this, you must finish what we couldn’t. You must destroy the breach.”
The console suddenly shuts down, and the cavern trembles. A low, guttural sound echoes from the depths of the facility.
“What was that?” Rohan asks, his weapon drawn instinctively.
Ar’thelis responds, its tone grim. “The anomaly has detected us. It is moving toward this location.”
Cliffhanger Ending
The trembling intensifies as cracks form in the cavern walls, glowing with the same energy as the anomaly.
Naira shouts, “We’ve got to get back to the surface—now!”
As the crew sprints toward the crevice, the ground collapses beneath them, sending them plunging into deeper darkness.
The screen fades to black as their screams echo through the void, accompanied by Dr. Varin’s final words:
“You must destroy it… before it destroys everything.”
