Zara Callister returned back home with the help of Marcus, but the weight of guilt still clung to her like a shadow.
“If I hadn't run away, maybe Tiana would have recognized me,” Zara thought gnawing at her, a guilt eating her whole.
“We're here.” Marcus cut off her thoughts, and she lifted her gaze to him. Her body was disheveled and tattered, like she'd been dragged.
“The Alpha awaits you,” Marcus stated, he was about to leave but halted, “He can be aggressive, especially at this time.”
Standing in front of his door, Zara felt an eerie presence looming around.
“What time? Is there something I should be aware of?” She then asked curiously.
Marcus shook his head. “It's his shadow sickness,” he briefly explained before excusing himself.
Zara still stood confused by what he said. She was overwhelmed by tonight's confrontation, and now she is awaited by Axton for unknown reasons.
“I wonder what he needs me for? Did he find out that I went over to the Crescent Moon pack? Sadie did warn me that Axton doesn't like that pack,” she thought, her heart beating loudly in her rib cage. Goosebumps spread across her body as she reached for the door handle, tempted to open it.
“What is this feeling?” Zara mumbled, only to be interrupted by Axton.
“Come in, Zara.” Axton's voice boomed through the door in a cold baritone voice.
Beads of sweat trickled her forehead, rolling from her hair to cheeks, and her heart raced uncontrollably as she struggled to breathe.
She felt like a child summoned to the principal's office.
Finally mustering up courage, she turned the knob and walked into the room.
It was dimly lit, and she barely saw anything except for the moonlight that escaped through the window.
She was met with a king sized bed, standing alone at the center of the dim room. A shadowy figure sat upon it.
“Why have you called me?” Zara asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The bed creaked and shaked, and the shadow figure adjusted itself. “You know why I called,” the voice intoned, sending another shiver down her spine. “I see you've gone up against my orders.”
Zara swallowed hard on her dry throat and tried to stand firm. “I only went to see my sister.”
Silence fell between them, and with every passing second, Zara’s heart beat rapidly like it was about to explode in a moment.
Out of the darkness, Axton stepped out towards the moonlight, his hands locked behind him
To her horror, Zara saw black vein-like lines spread all over his body and his eyes void of any emotions.
Soon fear engulfed her, prompting her to take a step back, asking out of curiosity, “What happened to you? Are you…ill?”
Her mind reeled to Marcus's words earlier.
“Is this the shadow sickness Marcus warned me about?”
Axton ignored her and walked up to her, leaning forward and staring blankly at her face. “You know I hate my order being ignored, and you broke a vital one,” his cold voice said.
“Mate!” Her wolf spontaneously growled in her, shattering her tough resolve.
“That's impossible! Axton can't be my mate, or is he?” she thought bewildered.
Mating season isn't here yet.
“I didn't save you so you could run back to your lover, Zara.” Axton's voice was getting aggressive. “Or have you forgotten our deal?”
Zara was thrown aback by his revelation, “What deals was he talking about? And did he just say save me?”
Axton frowned his face and stared at her disappointedly, he then stretched his hands and grabbed her by the arms. “These hands you wrapped around Damian, what should I do with them? Rip it off?” He chuckled at his joke, but Zara hitched her breath, watching in silence.
“I don't want what's mine to be contaminated…” he was saying when Zara yanked her hands away from him.
“You cannot just claim me as your mate?” She paused, staring at him. "How can I be yours when I don't remember ever doing the mate bond?”
Axton smirked, “I'll help you remember.” He stopped, then caressed her face with his hands, which were covered with tendrils. “First, you must fulfill your side of the contract.”
“Contract?” Zara sharply said. “What are you talking about? Why does everyone seem to know me while I'm completely in the dark?” she stopped, staring at his face. Her face held lots of uncertainty and fear.
“Just tell me everything. What did you save me from? Why is my sister acting strange ? Why am I here as your Luna, and what deals are you talking about?
Axton stepped backward, crossed his arms. Despite his pain, he decided to act strong. “Which would you like to know first?” He paused, “The contract? Or how I saved you?”
Zara closed her eyes for a brief second before saying, “How did I end up here?” Her voice was barely above whispers.
Axton smiled then, with a swift movement, grabbed her, and she slammed her body to his chest. His hands lifted her chin, and he spoke. “You died, remember?”
Zara, perplexed, tried to free herself from him, but his grip was too powerful.
“She told me to help you, and then we made the bond.” Axton finished his sentence, cupping Zara's face with his hands.
“I was in pain, Zara. I thought you were gone . I thought I'd lose you,” he said passionately.
“What are you talking about? Who's she? And why would you lose me?” Zara's curiosity piqued.
“The moon goddess.” Axton finally broke the suspense, and Zara gasped. “She bonded us and made sure you lived so you could help me.”
Zara tried comprehending what he'd said about the moon goddess. How did she come to Axton and ask him to help her?
“I don't believe you,” Zara stated, freeing herself from his hold, backing away.
However, Axton breathing became rasp as if he was struggling to breathe. “Is everything okay? What is happening to you?” She asked, reaching out for him again, but he reacted quickly and grabbed her again, and without any warning, Axton's fangs grew out, and he bit down on Zara's neck.
Zara let out a sharp scream.
“There's the mate bonding you needed,” Axton said possessively, then smashed his bloody lips against hers aggressively, giving her no breathing space.
“That's our contract: Cure me with your love.”
