EPISODE 20:
______
_SUNDAY MORNING. 7:42AM. THE TEXT_
My phone buzzed on the nightstand.
Kade was already awake. Sitting on the edge of the bed. Staring at it.
“Who is it?” I mumbled.
He turned the screen to me.
Unknown number.
Photo attached.
It was Scout.
From yesterday.
The lock-screen photo.
The one where he’s sitting perfectly, blue bandana bright, with all 4 of us behind him.
Under it:
_“He’s beautiful. Can we talk?”_
Kade’s jaw was tight.
“Delete it.”
“I didn’t send it to anyone.”
“I know.”
He stood.
“Coffee. Now.”
Scout heard us.
Came trotting in.
Sat.
Head tilted.
Like _why are you weird this morning?_
Kade crouched and buried his face in Scout’s fur.
“Nothing’s wrong, bud. Okay? Nothing’s wrong.”
But his voice shook.
---
#### _SUNDAY. 8:30AM. THE PLAN CHANGES_
Original plan: Pancakes. Lazy morning. Maybe another park later.
New plan: Kade wouldn’t say what was wrong.
Lila: “Why is Dad making coffee at 8am on a Sunday?”
Leo: “And why is he looking at his phone like it bit him?”
Me: “Grown-up stuff. Eat your pancakes.”
Kade was quiet through breakfast.
Scout sat under the table.
Every time Kade shifted, Scout’s tail thumped the floor.
Finally Kade put his phone down.
“We’re going out.”
“Where?”
“Not the park.”
“Then where?”
He looked at me.
“To see someone. About Scout.”
My stomach dropped.
“Is he... is something wrong with him?”
“No. He’s perfect.”
“Then what?”
Kade exhaled.
“I think... I think someone from before wants him back.”
The kitchen went silent.
Except for Scout, chewing a piece of crust Lila dropped.
---
#### _SUNDAY. 10:15AM. THE ADDRESS_
It was a house 20 minutes away.
White fence.
Garden.
Wind chimes.
Kade killed the engine but didn’t get out.
Hands on the wheel.
Scout in the backseat, nose pressed to the window.
Lila: “Dad? Are we in trouble?”
“No, baby.”
“Then why do you look like that?”
“Like what?”
“Sad.”
Kade closed his eyes.
“Because I’m scared.”
“Of what?” Leo asked.
“Of losing him.”
I reached over.
Took his hand.
“We’re not going to lose him. Not without a fight.”
He squeezed back.
“Okay. Let’s go.”
---
#### _SUNDAY. 10:22AM. THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR_
She was maybe 60.
Soft sweater.
Gray hair in a braid.
And she was holding a folder.
“Kade?”
He nodded.
“I’m Mara. From the rescue.”
Rescue.
The word hit like ice.
Scout saw her through the screen door and immediately started wagging.
Like he knew her.
Mara’s face softened.
“Oh. Hi buddy.”
Scout whined.
Tail going 100mph.
“Can we come in?” she asked.
Kade looked at me.
I nodded.
Inside smelled like tea and old books.
Photos on the wall.
Dogs.
Lots of dogs.
“Sit,” Mara said.
We did.
Scout sat between Kade and me.
Leaning on Kade’s leg.
Mara opened the folder.
“This is Scout’s intake form. From 8 months ago.”
She slid a paper over.
Photo of Scout.
Smaller.
Skinnier.
Scared eyes.
Blue bandana was not his.
“His name was Blue then,” Mara said gently.
Kade flinched.
“Blue?”
“That’s what we called him. We didn’t know his real name. He was found tied to a pole outside a gas station. No chip. No collar. Just this.”
She pulled out the bandana.
Same blue.
Faded.
Worn.
Kade picked it up.
His hands were shaking.
“He had this when we found him too.”
“I know,” Mara said.
“That’s why I’m here.”
---
#### _SUNDAY. 10:35AM. THE TRUTH_
Mara sipped her tea.
“Someone has been asking about him. For weeks. They saw your posts.”
“What posts?” Lila asked.
“The park photos. From yesterday. Someone recognized the bandana.”
Kade went pale.
“That text. That was you?”
“No. That was them. They got my number from the rescue site. I told them I had to talk to you first.”
Leo: “Who is it?”
Mara hesitated.
“A family. They lost a dog 8 months ago. Same breed. Same age. Same bandana. They’ve been looking.”
The room got very small.
Kade: “But... he chose us.”
“I know.”
“He sleeps by the door. He does zoomies. He swims. He guards the fort.”
“I know, Kade.”
“He’s ours.”
My voice cracked.
Scout looked up at all of us.
Like he could feel it.
Mara reached across the table.
“I’m not here to take him. Not today. The law says 30 days for stray hold. It’s been 8 months. He’s legally yours. But ethically...”
She trailed off.
Kade stared at the floor.
“Can we meet them?”
“Are you sure?”
“No. But we have to.”
---
#### _SUNDAY. 11:40AM. THE PARKING LOT MEETING_
We didn’t go to their house.
Neutral ground.
Lakeside Park.
Again.
A car pulled up.
Mom.
Dad.
Teenage girl.
And they were holding a leash.
With no dog on it.
The girl saw Scout and burst into tears.
“Blue?”
Scout froze.
Ears up.
Head tilted.
Kade’s grip tightened on the leash.
The girl took a step forward.
“Blue? Is that you?”
Scout whined.
Low.
Confused.
He looked at Kade.
Then at the girl.
Then back at Kade.
Kade crouched.
Eye level with him.
“Hey. It’s okay. You’re okay.”
Scout licked his face.
Once.
Twice.
The girl: “He remembers me.”
Kade didn’t look at her.
“His name is Scout now.”
“I know. I’m sorry. We thought... we thought he was gone. We looked for months. Posters. Shelters. Everything.”
Her dad: “We just want to see him. That’s all.”
Kade stood.
Slow.
“Okay. 10 minutes.”
---
#### _SUNDAY. 11:50AM. THE TEST_
They walked.
All of us.
Awkward.
Like two families sharing one dog.
The girl threw a ball.
Scout watched it.
Didn’t move.
Looked at Kade.
Kade nodded.
“Go on.”
Scout went.
Brought it back.
Dropped it at Kade’s feet.
Sat.
The mom tried: “Blue, sit.”
Scout sat.
But his eyes were on Kade.
The girl knelt.
“Do you remember me? Huh? Do you?”
Scout sniffed her hand.
Wagged once.
Then went back to Kade’s side.
Pressed against him.
Kade exhaled.
Like he’d been holding his breath for hours.
The girl started crying again.
“I thought he’d run to me.”
“I’m sorry,” I said.
“Don’t be,” her dad said.
“He’s happy. That’s what we wanted. We just... we needed to know.”
---
#### _SUNDAY. 12:10PM. THE DECISION_
We sat on a bench.
All of us.
Scout in the middle.
Half on Kade’s lap.
Half leaning on the girl.
Mara: “So. What do you want to do?”
Silence.
Kade looked at me.
I looked at the kids.
Lila was holding the girl’s hand.
Leo was showing her photos on his phone.
Of Scout swimming.
Of Scout in the fort.
Kade cleared his throat.
“He’s not a thing to give back.”
“I know.”
“But he was yours first.”
The girl shook her head.
“He was ours. But he’s yours now. You can tell.”
“How?”
“Because when I called him, he looked at you first.”
Kade broke.
Right there.
On the bench.
In public.
He put his face in his hands and sobbed.
Scout immediately climbed fully into his lap.
40 pounds of dog.
Licking his face.
Whining.
Like _I’m here. I’m here._
I put an arm around Kade.
“It’s okay.”
“It’s not okay,” he choked.
“It is. Because he chose you.”
The girl stood.
Handed Kade the empty leash.
“This was his. From when he was little.
You should have it.”
Kade took it.
Couldn’t speak.
Her dad: “Can we... can we get updates? Photos?”
Kade nodded.
Through tears.
“Every week. I promise.”
---
#### _SUNDAY. 1:00PM. THE DRIVE HOME_
Nobody talked for a long time.
Scout slept.
Head on Kade’s thigh in the passenger seat.
Finally Leo: “That was sad.”
Lila: “But also good.”
Me: “Yeah.”
Kade wiped his eyes.
“Did I do the right thing?”
“Yes,” I said.
“How do you know?”
“Because you chose what was best for him.
And what was best for him was you.”
He reached over.
Scratched Scout’s ear.
“Best boy,” he whispered.
Scout thumped his tail in his sleep.
---
#### _SUNDAY. 3:00PM. HOME. PROCESSING._
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
Scout ate.
Drank.
Then went to his bed.
Curled up.
Sighed.
Kade sat on the floor next to him.
Again.
Like last night.
I sat next to him.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Wanna talk?”
“I keep thinking... what if we hadn’t found him?
What if someone else did?
What if we missed him?”
“But we didn’t.”
“I know.”
He leaned into me.
“I’m so scared of losing things.”
“I know.”
“Promise me something.”
“Anything.”
“Don’t let me forget this feeling.
Of being chosen.”
I kissed his temple.
“I promise.”
---
#### _SUNDAY. 5:30PM. THE PHONE BUZZES_
It was the girl.
A photo.
Of her, younger, with a puppy Scout.
Same blue bandana.
Caption:
_“Thank you for loving him. He deserves you.”_
Kade stared at it for a long time.
Then he saved it.
To a new album.
Called “Scout”.
He showed me.
First photo: Gas station. Scared.
Last photo: Today. Asleep on his lap.
“Look at him,” Kade said.
“I am.”
“He went from that... to this.”
“Because of you.”
“Because of us.”
---
#### _SUNDAY. 8:00PM. FAMILY MEETING_
We all sat in a circle on the floor.
Scout in the middle.
Kade: “So. New rule.”
“What?” Leo asked.
“We take pictures. Every week.
So if anyone ever asks... we have proof that he’s loved.”
Lila: “Dad that’s so cute.”
Kade: “And new rule 2:
We never take a Saturday for granted again.”
Scout barked once.
Like agreement.
We all laughed.
Then cried a little.
Then laughed again.
---
#### _SUNDAY. 10:30PM. LAST WALK_
Just us two.
And Scout.
Colder tonight.
Scout walked slower.
Checking back more.
Kade stopped under the same streetlight.
Pulled me in.
“Thank you for today.”
“For what?”
“For not letting me panic.
For reminding me he’s ours.”
I rested my head on his chest.
“He is ours.”
“I know.”
Scout sat.
Waited.
Like he always does.
Kade whispered into my hair:
“First of many Saturdays.
Even the hard ones.”
“Especially the hard ones,” I answered.
