Weeks passed, and despite Liam's cautions, Eva found herself drawn more and more to the figure who was haunting her dreams and the forest. She was driven to learn the truth about Blackwood and the enigmatic Alpha that governed it, but she wasn't sure why. She started noticing odd things in the village, including people seeming to avoid the forest at night, whispered discussions that would stop when she got close, and the unusual respect—or was it fear? that the townspeople displayed for Liam.
For Liam, it was difficult to resist Eva. The curse was tightening its grip on him like a vice, drawing him closer to her with each passing sight. Though his heart had been icy and closed for a long time, it had begun to melt. He discovered that he was keeping an eye on her from the shadows, shielding her from threats she was unaware of. Though there was a voice in his head warning of the curse and its lethal repercussions, each contact with her just made his feelings grow stronger.
Eva came found an ancient book stashed away in a dingy corner of the town library one evening while she was studying the town's past. The book was old and had brittle pages from being bound in leather. Turning the pages carefully, she found tales of Blackwood's past, tales of witches and werewolves and a curse so strong that it had doomed the Alpha's line. She was increasingly convinced that Liam had some connection to these legends as she read more. The depiction of a symbol that resembled the one she had seen on her cottage wall, however, was what shocked her the most.
Eva went to the town's oldest and wisest resident, Elder Rowan, determined to find out more. The people in the town held him in high regard and said that no one else could possibly know all of Blackwood's secrets. Eva discovered him in a tiny, remote hut on the outside of the community. With his deep-set eyes that appeared to see right through her, he was a tall, slender man.
Eva started by showing him the symbol she had copied from the book and said, "I've read about the curse." "I believe that to be true. It seems to be impacting Liam.
Before saying anything, Rowan gave her a long, hard look. With a solemn tone, he declared, "The curse is very real." "A witch who had been harmed by the original Alpha cast it ages ago. Every Alpha has been destined to lose the person they love ever since. The Alpha is obligated to the land and the pack's blood due to a strong curse. It has never been broken."
Eva's heart fell. But she was adamant that there had to be a way. "There has to be something that can break it."
Rowan sighed. "A significant sacrifice would be needed to break the curse, and nobody has been able or willing to do it. And there's just too much risk. Many have attempted, but all have tragically failed."
Eva left Rowan's cabin undeterred and with renewed determination. She was aware that she couldn't allow Liam or the budding bond between them to be destroyed by the curse. She was willing to take any and all risks in order to discover a method to break it.
In the meantime, things were getting tense inside the pack. Although Marcus, the Beta, had always supported Liam, he was secretly in love with Eva. His jealousy grew as he saw how evident Liam's affections were for her. Marcus was concerned about Eva's safety because he was aware of the curse. Marcus confronted Liam one night, torn between his love for Eva and his commitment to Liam.
With a frustrated tone, Marcus remarked, "You're putting her in danger." "Like it has killed every other person you've loved the curse will kill her. You must give her up."
Although Marcus saw rage flashing in Liam's eyes, underlying it was fear—the same anxiety that had been eating away at Liam since the day he first met Eva. "You think I don’t know that?" Liam snarled. You believe I haven't made an effort? However, it's not that easy. I can't help but be near her. It seems like something is drawing us back together every time I try."
Marcus balled his hands, stifling the need to yell. "Then, Liam, you're going to kill her. I'll make sure that doesn't happen."
Despite the obvious tension between them, Liam didn't give up. He whispered, "I won't let her die," but his voice was shaking. "I’ll find a way to protect her."
The pack felt a problem as the full moon drew near. The wolves' instincts warned them of an approaching threat, which was why they were restless. As Liam and Eva's relationship grew closer, the curse started to rekindle, as though it sensed a challenge to its authority. Ravens flying over the woodland, a blood-red moon, and eerie dreams that kept Liam awake were all signs of bad things to come.
Eva was attracted back to the woodland one night when she couldn't sleep. She wasn't alone this time around. Liam was waiting for her with a non-readable expression. For a few period, they stood in silence, their tension nearly overwhelming each other. Liam finally said something.
With a forceful yet gentle tone, he stated, "You shouldn't be here." "It’s too dangerous."
Eva gave a headshake. "I don't fear the forest or myself," she retorted, drawing nearer. "Liam, I am aware of the curse. And you're internally dying, I know that."
Liam tensed up, showing his eyes were filled with pain. He said, "You don't understand." "Eva, I'm unable to be with you. The curse will kill you if I allow myself to love you."
Eva extended her hand and lightly touched his arm. "So let's lift the curse," she uttered. Together, we can find a solution. I am indifferent to the risk. You are important to me."
Liam was stunned for a little moment. He had never heard someone talk with such hope and conviction. But the curse was too great for him to ignore, much as he wanted to believe her. With each stride, his heart broke as he withdrew.
With an emotional stutter, he said, "I can't do this." "I can’t lose you."
Liam changed into his wolf form and fled into the wilderness before Eva could reply, leaving her by herself and devastated.
Eva silently vowed to herself as Liam vanished into the night. Whatever it took, she would find a way to lift the curse. She wasn't going to let Liam go without saving him, no matter what.
They had no idea that their love had already caused irreversible events to happen. Sensing the curse's fading, dark forces were starting to stir, both inside and without the pack. And shortly after, a danger far bigger than the curse would surface, making Liam and Eva face not just their emotions but also the pack's ultimate destiny.
