Chapter 3: Five Years Later: The Queen’s Return

594 Words
Five Years Later. "Mommy! Leo hit me with his wooden sword again!" A small, high-pitched voice broke my concentration. I looked up from the medical scrolls spread across my mahogany desk, a soft smile tugging at my lips. Standing in the doorway was Maya, her silver-white hair tied in messy pigtails. She had my eyes, but her temperament was all fire. Behind her, Leo—the eldest by exactly three minutes—was trying to look innocent while hiding a toy sword behind his back. He was the spitting image of him—the golden-eyed stranger from that stormy night. Then there was Jax, the third triplet, who was sitting quietly on the rug, already dismantling a high-tech GPS tracker I’d bought for their safety. At age four, his IQ was already off the charts. "Leo, apologize to your sister," I said, my voice calm but firm. Leo sighed, his shoulders dropping. "Sorry, Maya. I was just practicing my Alpha stance." "You’re not an Alpha yet, you’re a pipsqueak," Maya stuck her tongue out, then skipped over to hug my legs. Looking at them, no one would ever guess that five years ago, I was a broken girl shivering in the mud, rejected and left for dead. The rejection had been the greatest pain of my life, but it was also my greatest blessing. The moment Caleb severed our bond, my dormant wolf hadn't died—she had awakened. I wasn't wolfless. I was a White Lunar Wolf, a legendary bloodline that had been suppressed by the weak atmosphere of the Blackwood Pack. Now, I was known across the supernatural world as "Dr. V," the most elite healer and tracker in the northern hemisphere. I lived in a high-security penthouse in the Neutral Zone, far from the reach of narrow-minded Alphas. Ring— My encrypted phone buzzed on the desk. I picked it up. "Speak." "Dr. Vance," a gravelly voice came through. It was my contact at the Lycan Council. "We have an emergency. There’s a mysterious plague sweeping through the mountain territories. Three packs have already lost their elders. They’re desperate." My heart skipped a beat. "Which territories?" "The Blackwood Pack and its neighbors." A cold shiver raced down my spine. Blackwood. My old home. The place where Caleb Blackwood ruled as Alpha with his 'perfect' Luna, Elena. "They’ve offered a massive reward," the contact continued. "And they’ve requested the best. If you don't go, the death toll will reach hundreds of pups by next week." I looked at my three children. My pups. My world. If it were just about Caleb, I would never go back. I’d let him rot. But the thought of innocent pups dying because of a plague I knew how to cure... I couldn't ignore that. "Mommy? Are you okay?" Jax asked, looking up from his gadgets. His golden eyes—so much like his father’s—were eerily perceptive. "I’m fine, Jax," I said, my grip tightening on the phone. "Pack your bags, kids. We’re going on a trip." "Where to?" Leo asked, his eyes lighting up with the prospect of adventure. I looked out the window toward the distant, dark mountains of my past. "To a place where people believe in ghosts," I whispered. "It's time they realize that some ghosts don't stay dead. Some come back to claim what’s theirs." Caleb Blackwood thought he threw away a burden. He has no idea that I’m coming back with the three most powerful heirs in the world—and a wolf that wants his blood.
