I stared at him a bit confused, with my cheeks bright red from embarrassment.
"Your sister?"
He turned to me looking as confused as I was.
"I don't understand your question. Are you asking if she is my sister?"
Embarrassment bloomed in even deeper shades in my cheeks as I answered him with an awkward chuckle.
"Well... I guess I am..."
"Well then, yes I she is my sister. She has been since the moment she was born."
He said with a sarcastic smile and all I could do was shake my head.
"Sorry... I am just surprised. I was sure that she was your mate. You look nothing alike."
A soft smile appeared on his face as he shook his head.
"No, I get it. Everyone is surprised and very few make the connection. And it's true that we look nothing alike. She looks just like our mother and I had the misfortune of looking just like my father... but she is my sister."
There was no mistaking the softness in his voice as he talked about his sister. The unmistakable love there was so bright and completely impossible to ignore. My heart squeezed painfully as his love for his sister showed, and I could not help but feel a bit jealous of it.
"Can I ask you something?"
He turned to me with a mischievous smile on his face.
"You can..."
"Why do I feel like there is a but at the end of that?"
"Because there is. You can ask anything you want, but I can't promise that I will answer."
I chuckled at his attempt to be mysterious.
"Okay, mister super secret. What are you doing here? Or better, why are you doing this? It's clear that you dislike my father and that, as you called it, baby sitting is not something you do. We both know that most of the time you are on the other side or the barricades, then right now. If I was to believe your reputation, then I would say that you do not have money problems. You are the best known elite mersinery there is, so if not for money... then why go through all these problems? What does my father have over you? Or was it Darcy?"
His face went blank for a moment as he took a deep breath.
"You are smarter than they give you credit for."
The look on his face changed into a soft smile and did seem like a true smile.
"Thank you for the compliment, but it won't get you out of answering me."
His smile got only wider as he leaned back against the wall behind him.
"There are things that money can't give me."
"And my father or Darcy can?"
"Your father... he has influence and connections with people that are unreachable to me in any other way."
Confused, I stared at him and I guess he noticed my confusion because he continued.
"There are places you can't buy or kill your way into... and believe me, I have already tried it. As you guessed, this is not a thing I would do on my free will or not out of desperation. But I am desperate and this is the only way I can save her..."
His voice sounded completely defeated and broken at the end, but before I could say anything else his phone vibrated.
"It's your father. There is going to be an official dinner tonight, so he wants you to get something appropriate to wear. So I take it they didn't bother to bring your stuff from the campus?"
The message reminded me of the mess my life was right now and all i could was nod to him in agreement.
"Yeah... I expected something like this to happen... what I did not expect was to find my whole room cleaned out and everything I had thrown away."
He stared at me for a moment.
"Are you sure that they threw everything away? Maybe it was just packed away somewhere..."
I just shook my head.
"Oh no, it's gone."
"Maybe we can check out your room and see if there is anything left?"
"No need, it's completely empty."
"You checked already?"
"Yeah and I'm sure you saw that it's empty, as well as when you walked here. The room behind that window is... used to be mine."
He blinked a few times as his eyes ran over the empty white room behind his back.
"Ummm... yeah... I guess it is empty... So I guess it's unavoidable that we go shopping?"
I nodded while laughing.
"I take it that you are not a fan of shopping."
He nodded while laughing.
"Yeah... I would face fifty bloodthirsty werewolves, bare hand if it would mean that I would not need to go shopping again."
"I take it that you have experience in it? Lots of exes that wanted to be pampered?"
He laughed and shook his head.
"Nah, none of my hook-ups could make me go through torture like that. It's Alisha who would drag me around every store possible. She never had many friends because of her health, and so she craved to fulfill her girly experience of shopping, and I was the innocent victim of her shopping addiction."
I could not help, but laughed at the soft look on his face.
"I'm sorry to tell you that, but the girl has you wrapped around her pink finger."
He released a deep sight and nodded.
"Yeah, I know... but there is no way that I could say no to her puppy dog eyes. She is way too good at those for her own good."
"And it doesn't hurt that she has a brother that is crazy for her..."
I added, and another honest smile slipped into his face.
"Yeah... I can't help myself. It was always like that. She was always quite sick, even when she was a child, and I always wanted to be a good brother to her. There was a lot she missed out on due to her health and I... I just want to see her happy. She needs all the love she can get, especially now that I'm the only family she has..."
The undeniable love for his sister in his face made my heart squeeze in so much pain that I could hardly breathe.
Blush crept onto his cheeks as he realized that he probably said a bit too much, so he jumped to his feet and extended a hand to me.
"Come on, princess, we have some shopping to do."
The disgust in his voice as he said shopping was so exaggerated that it got me laughing.
"Don't sound too excited about it."
"Well, for me, it will be as fun as eating broken glass, so I don't see a reason to be happy about it."
I rolled my eyes at his drama when an idea popped into my head. Shopping here will be a miserable experience for both of us, because I prefer to do my shopping online and not in person... there is also the small fun fact that everyone will stare at me if I go outside... but there is someone who would enjoy this more... and maybe they would draw away packs attention form me...
"How about a deal? As compensation for your distress, we can take your sister along with us."
His face instantly softened as he reached out to take his phone out and typed out a message and a moment later he received an answer.
"Alisha will meet us at the front door in five minutes."
