A Sunday Like Home

The knock on her door came soft. Not urgent. Not loud. Just… sure. Zina paused mid-swipe of her lip gloss, turned toward the door like she already knew. And when she opened it,there he was. Damian Kole. Hair a little tousled. Shirt slightly wrinkled from the drive. And in both hands? Bags. Lots of them. She blinked. “You left the empire to go shopping?” “No,” he replied, stepping in, “I left the empire to see the only part of my life that doesn’t feel like war.” She didn’t speak. He just hugged her.No hesitation. No questions. The hug was deep — not the “hi” kind, but the “I missed your soul” kind. She was surprised but still returned the hug ………….. Zina couldn’t stop laughing as he unpacked the shopping bags. There were lots of luxury wears, skincare products, satin robes, wigs, and even the exact perfume she had once mentioned in passing over voice notes. “You remember all this?” she asked, eyes wide. “I hear everything,” he said softly, “even the things you whisper like they don’t matter.” She paused. Just for a second. Because how do you respond when a man notices your silence? …………… That evening, Zina insisted on cooking. She tied her scarf and pulled out the pots like someone preparing for battle. “Today, we’re dragging your billionaire tongue through the trenches,” she warned, laughing. “What’s for dinner?” Damian asked, amused. “Amala, ewedu, gbegiri, assorted. If you cough, I’ll record it.” Damian was like excuse me? You heard me right boss, “Amala, ewedu, gbegiri, assorted. If you waste am I go record am, post am, and tag your mother.” She pointed at him with the wooden spoon. “Eat with chest, Mr Kole.” He burst out laughing. A real one. The kind of laugh that untied knots in his chest. you haven’t tasted it before or what, cause your mood says something else,…hell yes I haven’t even seen how it looks…..wow,well you will enjoy it,relax your mind rich man….. The aroma in the room was scandalous. Zina had outdone herself. The amala was soft, the ewedu stretched like jazz, and the assorted meat threatened to humble every bone in his elite body. Damian stared at his plate like it was a final exam. “You’re stalling,” Zina teased. “Is it fear? Or pride?” “Neither,” he said, picking up the spoon. “I’m just calculating how to survive this insult you call dinner.” She gasped. “Oh really?” He dipped in, took the first bite, and paused. His eyebrows lifted slowly, then he coughed. Zina didn’t even wait. “AH! I said it! Where’s my phone?!” She stood up instantly, fake-panicking. “This cough is evidence o! I go record am, post am, tag Kole & Sons official page!” Damian was laughing too hard to fight back. It was the kind of laughter that came from the belly, wild, loud, and rare. That was the thing with Zina. She didn’t need gold to dazzle. She just needed her energy. And somehow… it made even Damian Kole feel like a person again. …………… After dinner, the lights dimmed. They sat on the couch. Shoulders touching. Sharing silence. There was no kiss. No pressure. Just… comfort. Zina scrolled through her phone while he absentmindedly scrolled too,,,but every few seconds, he glanced at her. The curve of her cheek. The way her lashes rested against her skin. At exactly 11:03pm, she said, “So when are you going?” He blinked. “Uhm… my driver said there’s a slight issue with the car. I told him to go. I’ll stay till morning and just head to the office straight from here.” Zina squinted. “You? Kole? No backup car?” He held a straight face. “The entire backup fleet is under maintenance.” “You’re lying.” He shrugged. “I’m rich. Not mechanical.” They both laughed again. She rolled her eyes and stood up. “Come and take bedsheet, liar.” ………………… Zina gave him a guest blanket but he never used it. The house was warm. The peace warmer. He lay on her couch, fully dressed, staring at the ceiling like it held answers he had never asked before. How could a place this small carry so much calm? Why did he feel safer here than in the Kole mansion? And why did Zina’s laugh still echo even when she had stopped laughing? He didn’t know. But one thing was certain,he wasn’t ready to let go of this calm. ………………. By 6:30am, Zina was already dressed for work. She looked effortlessly stunning in a coffee-colored jumpsuit and small gold hoops. Damian’s driver arrived with fresh clothes ,suit, belt, shoes, even a luxury wristwatch he forgot he owned. She handed him a toothbrush from her pack. “You forgot this too,” she said, smirking. He took it. “Do you always have guest toothbrushes?” “No. Just vibes.” They walked out together, got into separate cars, but arrived at the office at the same time. For once… Damian wasn’t entering the building as the boss. He was walking in as a man who had spent the night at peace. ……………. What he didn’t know was that peace would soon become a privilege. Because somewhere in Lagos… Gloria was preparing her loudest move yet. 3b next
