The office lobby was quiet when he arrived.
Zina almost didn’t recognize him.
Her uncle stood there like a stranger. Older. Slimmer. Smiling like he had the right.
“Zina,” he said softly. “You’ve grown so much. I’ve been searching for you…”
Her body locked. Not in fear — in fury buried deep.
“You didn’t search for me when my mother died,” she said, arms folded.
He flinched. “Zina, please. I wasn’t thinking straight back then. Everything was happening so fast”
“You threw me out.”
“It was raining. I was sixteen.”
“I had nowhere to go. And you didn’t look back.”
He looked at her, glassy-eyed. “I didn’t know how to help”
Zina stepped forward. Calm. Controlled.
“You didn’t need to know how to help. You just had to not leave me outside like a stray.”
Silence.
“But look at you now,” he whispered, trying to smile. “You’ve made it. You’re… doing big things.”
She gave a dry chuckle. “You’re just in time for the celebration, right?”
And then she turned.
Walked away.
THE NEXT MORNING — KOLE EMPIRE MAIN HALL
Over 200 staff members gathered.
The atmosphere was thick with curiosity. Why had HR sent out a “mandatory appearance” notice?
Damian Kole walked out, dressed in a black turtleneck, suit jacket over it, no tie. Calm. Sharp. Serious.
“I want to make an announcement,” he said, voice carrying.
He looked around the room.
“Most of you know her as my assistant. Some of you know her as the one who solves problems before they begin. But what you may not know is this…”
He paused. Then:
“Zina is not just my staff. She is not just a genius. She is… my woman.”
Gasps.
Phones quietly recording.
Eyes wide. A few jealous stares. A few warm nods.
Zina stepped out from the side hallway, dressed in a fitted black dress and a simple gold pin. Her presence? Commanding.
She didn’t smile too much. She didn’t wave.
She just was.
And that was enough.
PRIVATE OFFICE — LATER
Damian pulled her in gently by the hand.
“You handled that well.”
Zina chuckled. “Like I had a choice.”
He sat behind his desk, then looked up at her.
“I wanted to talk to you about something. Now that we’ve made it official, I was thinking… maybe it’s time you stopped being my assistant.”
Zina raised a brow.
“You want to fire me?”
He laughed. “Never. I just think… you deserve better. Something bigger.”
But she shook her head slowly. “Let me stay here.”
Damian blinked.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes,” she said firmly. “If I ever leave this seat, it won’t be because we’re together. It’ll be because I’ve outgrown it.”
And in that moment, he knew.
She’s not here for a ride. She’s here to rise.
THE FIRST GIFT
He opened a drawer and pulled out a small black velvet box.
“Here,” he said, pushing it toward her.
She opened it.
A car key. Sleek. Heavy. Custom.
“The new GLE Coupe,” he said. “Armored. Safe. Yours.”
Zina stared at it shocked.
“Damian…”
“I want you to feel protected. Not bought.”
She didn’t speak right away. Then she smiled.
He leaned forward.
“And… about where you’re staying.”
She tilted her head.
“Should I get you a place in Banana Island? Or… would you rather move in with me?”
Zina paused.
“I think I’d like to live on my own first.”
Damian nodded slowly. “That’s… exactly what I expected you to say.”
SOMEWHERE IN THE BUILDING — LEON
Leon slammed his laptop shut.
“Her again,” he muttered. “Always one step ahead.”
His fiancée,Amira Stone,stormed in.
“So it’s true?” she hissed. “Your family is handing the entire company to a random girl from nowhere?”
“She’s not a random girl!” Leon snapped. Then stopped himself.
Amira’s jaw dropped.
“Wow. You’re defending her now?”
Leon turned away. His voice low.
“She’s a problem. Not just to me… but to all of us.”
Amira clenched her fists. “Then maybe you should remove her.”
Leon’s eyes darkened.
MEANWHILE — ZINA’S PHONE LIGHTS UP
Incoming Security Alert: Attempted breach – Server C4

Zina’s fingers moved fast.
She opened the system log and smirked.
“Nice try,” she whispered. “But you’re still playing chess with the queen.”
