"I told you you'd look more beautiful." Logan said as he hugged her from behind.
"Thank you very much," I'd have preferred blue. But she didn't say the last part. He was dressed handsomely, in a three piece suit, a darker shade of her gown. In the mirror they looked powerful. She liked that.
"I have a gift for you," he said, nuzzling her neck, already beginning to pepper butterfly kisses over her exposed skin.
"What is it?"
"It's our bond, a symbol of our love." He put a necklace delicately on her neck, his eyes staring intently at her through the mirror. She blinked and looked down at the necklace. It was a crystal filled with a red liquid, hanging on a silver chain.
"It's beautiful, Logan. Thank you so much." She raised a hand and touched the crystal, a thrill resonated through her hand and spread to her entire body.
"You're always welcome, my Sundrop. Now, we must go or we'll be late."
They walked out her room, hand in hand. The pack house was mostly empty, and they took their time walking to the ball. At the venue, Claire could feel the power in the atmosphere. All the leaders who had made the Vermont pack what it was, gathered in one place. She felt a twinge of pain in her heart that her parents couldn't be with them.
"They're here." Logan said, giving her hand a comforting squeeze.
She turned to him, confused. "Who?"
"Your parents. They're here. In spirit."
Claire smiled sadly. "I believe. They are."
"Let's make sure they have a good time."
She nodded. "Of course."
They walked to the former leaders, exchanging greetings and asking about the state of affairs.
"Claire, my darling, how have you been?" Claire turned to see Luna Cher, the Luna that handed over to her mother. A bright smile appeared on her face as she embraced Cher.
"Oh my goodness I have missed you so much! You look good!"
"As do you my dear." Cher said with a pleasant smile, her liquid gold eyes scanning Claire's body. "I see you've been running the pack perfectly fine."
"I will try. Plus I have Logan and Sasha, who are very supportive of me."
Cher sighed. "We miss them too, everyday."
"Yeah, I wish they were here too."
Cher's eyes suddenly narrowed and she sniffed the air. Then her eyes filled with alarm. "My goodness, what a nasty thing they've done to you."
Claire smiled sadly. "I have it under control. "
"This is control?!" Cher whispered fiercely. "Girl you are halfway gone! We cannot lose another Luna, you know that! Have you found who is responsible?"
"Cher, really, it's fine. I'm okay, I'll solve this on my own."
Cher narrowed her eyes. "If you say so. Would you like a drink?"
She shook her head. "Thank you, Cher. But I can't. Enjoy the celebration, I'll meet you at the run."
Cher didn't look convinced. But she nodded and walked away, catching up with another Luna. Claire sighed, already feeling a headache brewing. At the corner of her eye she could see Logan and Sasha, taking and laughing a bit too comfortably for her liking. She still hadn't forgotten about the first time she saw them together. Except this time, it rubbed her off the wrong way. They were in public crying out loud. Claire walked up to them and pulled Sasha aside.
"I need to talk to you." She said, a hunt of urgency in her voice. "Like, now."
Sasha raised a brow. "Sure. I'll see you later Logan."
"Have fun girls."
Claire grabbed Sasha's hand and pulled her out of the ball arena. They walked silently through the forest till Claire was sure they were out of earshot. The spot was one of Claire's favorite spots, Sele's well.
"What is wrong with you?" Sasha asked, folding her arms and flashing Claire a look of annoyance.
"No, what is wrong with you, Sasha?"
"What do you mean?!"
Claire ran her hand through her hair. "You damn well know what I'm talking about. I saw you and Logan the other day."
Claire watched carefully as Sasha's look of confusion changed to shock, then contempt, then arrogance.
"So?"
Taken aback Claire scoffed. "So?! You're asking me so?! Sasha are you f*****g my mate?!"
"What if I am then?"
Claire felt dread. Pure cold dread. "Sasha..." Her voice was a whisper, cracking Abit. "Oh god no, please tell me you're joking."
"I sure would like to, but then that'd make me a liar."
Claire felt tears well up in her eyes. She exhaled, her eyes clouding up. "How long now?"
"What will it mean to you?"
"I f*****g asked how long?!"
"Don't yell at me! I'm not your little servant."
Claire felt anger brewing in her belly. "Well maybe you have forgotten that I am your Luna, you obey my command! How long have you been f*****g my mate?!"
"Luna?" Sasha scoffed. "You are not fit to be a Luna. You're a sad excuse for one."
"What?! Where is this coming from?"
Sasha walked up to her till they were nose to nose. "Do you know how much I hate you? How much do I wake up everyday and pretend to be your little obedient servant?!"
"What?!"
"I am the one who should've been Luna. I have all it takes. While you're just a daddy's little girl. Oh, I'm sorry, both your daddies I mean."
A tear slid down her cheek. "You're so cruel. After all we've been through, this is how you repay me?"
"I honestly thought it would work faster, turns out you're quite resistant after all. But now, there's no need to worry."
Claire's eyes widened. "So It was you..."
Sasha laughed, a chilling sound. "You're so smart, Genius."
Claire felt a sharp pain in her stomach. At first, she didn't make anything of it. Till her gown began to feel sticky, and a burning sensation shot up her body. She stumbled back, and with fear looked down. There was a dagger sticking out of her.
"Sasha..." She whispered, "I loved you, I treated you like my sister..."
Sasha inspected her nails, a bored look on her face. "Yeah yeah, your mistake. Now hurry up and die."
Claire felt her body light up with pain as hot as fire. She screamed into the night, pain lighting every nerve of hers on fire.
"That's it!" Sasha screamed, laughing "let me hear more of your dying screams. Wolf's bane is truly a terrifying thing, maybe I should have used it instead."
Claire stared at her once best friend, laughing at her, and her heart broke. She doubled over, clawing at the earth, crying and screaming. The pain was intense, wolfsbane was a poison very deadly to werewolves, there was no way she could survive this.
As her life slipped out of her hands, she thought of her parents, of Logan, and the pack. And she remembered Cher. Turns out she was right after all.
What a sad ending.
Only, it wasn't the end. Her eyes flew open and she was met with an unfamiliar face staring at her and smiling with relief and joy.
"You're alive! Everyone, she's alive! Hurry!"
Claire sat up in a hurry and stared at her belly, there was no dagger sticking out of her. She turned and stared at the man who was sitting beside her. She was sure she'd never met him before.
"My Rose, it's a miracle! You're alive!" The man said.
Claire blinked. Rose? Who was that? She turned and looked behind her. She could see anyone, so she turned back to the man only for him to pull her close and into a deep kiss.
"You have no idea how happy I am right now."
"Where's Sasha?" Claire asked, her voice sounding hoarse and nothing like hers at all.
The man frowned. "Sasha? There's no one like that in the driftwood pack."
"Driftwood? Oh my god..."
She rushed out of bed and ran into the bathroom, throwing up the contents of her stomach. She caught sight of her reflection in a mirror and lost her balance. Her hair was blond, instead of the deep brown it was. Her eyes were green, the face she was staring into wasn't hers.
"Rose, is everything alright?"
Claire fell to the floor. This was bad. This was very bad.
