After the exchange with kasha on her first day of training, commander Torin let her sit and watch the others train in order to learn,Lyra felt humiliated more than ever, first it was Alpha jaxon, then devel’s men in the woods and now kasha, she hated her,she reminded Lyra of Cliara and her constant schemes against her but she wasn't going to let someone play her,not in a place where she had a chance of starting a fresh especially when the so called ‘BEAST’ had shown interest in her.
The week that followed was a blur of bruises and bone-deep exhaustion. Commander Torin showed Lyra no mercy. If anything, the fact that she was an Omega under the Alpha’s personal "interest" made him harder on her. He pushed her until her muscles trembled and her breath came in ragged, burning gasps.
The other students were a constant storm of whispers. Kasha, humiliated by Lyra’s lucky dodge during the evaluation, had made it her mission to ensure Lyra remained at the bottom of the hierarchy. Every meal in the communal hall was a gauntlet of tripped feet and "accidental" spills.one fateful day in the communal hall,Lyra had just collected her meal and on her way to find a seat, she looked over to the table where the service girls were seated, she wanted to join them but it was forbidden.
In whisperwind, hierarchy was taken seriously and since the service girls were at the bottom of the system, they kept to themselves and were not allowed to associate with the higher ranks which included the pack combat trainees.
Lyra found an empty chair and was about to sit when she heard some giggles behind her,she thought nothing of it until she had sat down, that was when she felt something wet on her thighs, she reached down to touch it and found out it was glue, she panicked immediately and tried to get up to no avail, amidst her struggles,a bucket of some sort of red liquid was dumped on her,she felt it on her,the perpetrators had already gathered round her,she didn't need to be told it was kasha and her minions.
“welcome”they all squeaked and burst out laughing
“don't worry newbie, this is our welcome tradition for newbies, hmm mm”
Lyra tried to smell the liquid to find out what it was;
“ its pigs blood” one of the first replied and chuckled.
“its ok girls, this is to officially welcome our newest member, let's all give her a warm welcome”.kasha spoke out and the rest of the group applauded and echoes of ‘welcome Lyra’ amidst chuckles and stifled laughter rented the air.
Lyra watched as they all walked away and something in her snapped, she felt anger, but she stayed calm, she couldn't fight now,she was drenched so she walked to the bathroom to clean up,
at the bathroom sink, while trying to wash her hair, another girl walked up to her
“hey,I'm Fiona, she paused, that happened to me too, kasha is a bully .
“yeah”
“her father is the most influential knight and she's basically a spoilt brat”
“ I'm Lyra, nice to meet you,Lyra introduced herself to the freckled covered girl.
“ nice to meet you too,let me help you with that.
Lyra made a friend that day but realized something else, she had to prove herself, and fast she wasn't going to live the life she had in stone fang in whisperwind and ever since that day something was changing inside Lyra. The physical pain of training was a welcome distraction from the spiritual ache of the snapped bond. In the sand of the arena, she wasn't the girl Jaxon had rejected; she was a body learning to move, a mind learning to anticipate.
On the fifth day, during a high-intensity defensive drill, it happened again.she was paired up with kasha for a one on one combat drill.
Kasha was charging, her eyes bright with the intent to finally put Lyra in the dirt. As she lunged, the world around Lyra seemed to lose its sharp edges. The sound of the other students faded into a dull hum. She didn't just see Kasha’s fist; she saw the intent behind it—a ripple of energy that preceded the strike.
Lyra didn't just dodge. She pivoted with a grace that felt ancient, her hand reaching out to catch Kasha’s wrist. For a heartbeat, a faint, golden glow pulsed beneath Lyra’s skin—so subtle it was almost invisible in the harsh morning sun.
Kasha froze, her entire arm going numb. She stumbled back, looking at her hand as if it had been struck by lightning.
"What was that?" Kasha hissed, her voice trembling. "What did you do to me?"
The golden light vanished as quickly as it had appeared. Lyra stood panting, her heart racing. "I... I didn't do anything."
Commander Torin approached, his eyes narrowed. He looked from the frustrated Kasha to the trembling Lyra;then almost immediately turned to walk away then spoke "Enough for today, Lyra, the Alpha has summoned you to the North Tower. Immediately."
The North Tower was the highest point of the Citadel, a place of cold stone and howling winds, that was where the alpha's office was located,Lyra had learned.Lyra’s legs felt like lead as she climbed the spiral staircase. When she reached the heavy oak door at the top, it swung open before she could knock.
Alpha Devel was standing by the window, his back to her. He had shed his heavy armor, wearing only a simple black tunic that emphasized the powerful span of his shoulders. The room was filled with old maps and strange, glowing crystals.
"You are learning," he said, his voice a low vibration that seemed to echo in her very bones.
Lyra bowed her head. "I am trying, Alpha."
He turned around. The emerald intensity of his gaze was even more piercing in the small room. He walked toward her, stopping only inches away. The scent of him—cedar, rain, and raw power—clouded her senses.
"Torin tells me you have reflexes that shouldn't belong to an Omega," Devel said, his voice dropping to a whisper. He reached out, his long fingers grazing the bruise on her jaw. Lyra shivered, but she didn't pull away. "And today... he saw something else. A light."
"I don't know what it is," Lyra whispered, her hazel eyes meeting his green ones. "I just... I saw it before it happened. It felt like the world slowed down."
Devel’s expression shifted. For a fleeting second, the "Beast" was gone, replaced by a man haunted by a legacy he couldn't escape. He looked at her not as a prize, but as a mystery he was desperate to solve.
"My great-grandmother had that gift," he murmured. "They called it the Pulse of the Queen. It wasn't just strength; it was the ability to see the flow of the world's magic."
He moved closer, his hand sliding from her jaw to the back of her neck, his thumb tracing the sensitive skin behind her ear. The contact was electric, sending a different kind of spark through Lyra—one that didn't hurt, but made her feel profoundly alive.
"Stonefang was blind," Devel said, his voice rough. "They threw away a diamond because they couldn't see past the dust on the surface. But I see you, Lyra. I see what you are becoming."
Lyra felt a surge of heat in her chest. For the first time since the rejection, she didn't feel like a mistake.
"What do you want from me, Alpha?" she asked, her voice steadying.
Devel’s thumb stopped its movement. His eyes darkened, the emerald glow intensifying. "I want you to realize your power. I want you to stand at the head of my army. And when the time comes..." He leaned down, his breath warm against her ear. "...I want to see the look on Jaxon’s face when he realizes he didn't just reject an Omega. He rejected his own destruction."
He pulled back, his face a mask of Alpha control once more. "Go. Return to your quarters. Mama Agnes will bring you new gear tomorrow. You will no longer train with the students. From now on, you train with me."
Lyra walked out of the tower, her mind spinning. She was no longer just a survivor; she was a weapon being forged in the heart of the Whisperwind. And as she looked at the silver moon hanging over the valley, she realized she wasn't afraid of the Beast anymore.
She was becoming one.
