Daisy POV
His mother had barely left us. He closed the door behind his mother after which he turned back. He steps closer to me ,“Sit,” he said again softly……This time, I couldn't hesitate. I sat because something in his voice sounded like a command.
He sat opposite my direction, looked me in the eyes and then he asked quietly, “Why do you hide your smartness?”.... I didn't expect such a question, it struck me deeper….My lips parted, but no word came out. I wasn’t prepared for him to see that, I have thought I guarded it diligently and well enough for anyone not to notice.
I swallowed. “Because smart maids don’t keep jobs.”..His brow tightened. “In this house they do.”...I looked away, but he stepped closer, forcing my gaze back to his….“What are you afraid of?” he asked….Everything, I wanted to say… Losing this job, being noticed, being misunderstood, being seen too clearly. But I answered, “Nothing, sir.”He exhaled softly. “Liar.”
The word wasn’t sharp. It was gentle. Too gentle. And that was what broke my composure. Something inside medidn't sit well again… .I stood gently. “I need to finish the study.”But before I could turn away, he held my ankle not forcefully, just firmly enough to make me stop.“Don’t leave me like this” he said. “Talk to me.”
My pulse thudded against his fingers. I knew he felt it. I knew he knew exactly what he was doing to me.Then,A voice, soft and sharp……. A female voice, from the hallway.“Is it true? The maid is in the study room with him again?”I froze….. He froze, another voice whispered back, “They said she was sitting with him. Sitting. Like an equal.”My stomach dropped.
I heard footsteps. Two housemaids. The senior one, Linda lowered her voice to a vicious whisper.“You know his mother saw them alone together. The staff wing is buzzing already.”
A scoff“She won’t last a week. If his mother doesn’t throw her out, the board will. Imagine the scandal, him with a maid.”My blood turned cold.I pulled my hand free from his.“I have to go,” I whispered. He stepped forward. “Stay.”“I can’t,” I breathed. “They’re already talking.”
“And since when,” he said quietly, “do I care about what people in my house say?”“I care,” I said, my voice trembling despite me. “I need this job. I can’t afford to be the subject of rumors. I can’t survive another place throwing me out because someone misunderstood my intentions.”He stared at me,really stared like he was seeing a side of me I had not meant to show.“Tell me what really scares you,” he said.I shook my head. “This.”
Then I did the one thing I promised myself I wouldn’t do in this house—I let my voice shake.“Being noticed by a man like you. Surprised at my word. His eyes darkened. Something dangerous passed through them. But before he could speak, before he could pull me back or corner me with another question, Linda’s voice carried sharply from right outside the door—
“Open it. I want to see if she’s still inside.”My breath stopped. His eyes flicked to the door, then back to me.A decision formed behind them.“Come here,” he whispered.“What? No”…..But he stepped closer, his hand brushing my arm, his voice calm and commanding“....Unless you want them to see you rattled… “come here.”I swallowed hard.
Because his mother had walked in on us once.Because the staff was whispering now…Because a scandal was already brewing around me. And because I was starting to realize…I wasn’t afraid of him.
---
The door opened swiftly and Linda stood there, accusing me as if she knew me from somewhere before triumph flickering in her eyes. Behind her were two more staff members, hovering like birds waiting for a body. She looked at me with bitterness of heart…
Her smile curled.“I knew it,” she breathed.Heat flooded my cheeks. I stepped back instantly, but it was already too late—the scene had been captured like a photograph
…. Nath straightened slowly, the movement controlled, like a man choosing which weapon to use. His eyes sharpened into ice.“What,” he asked quietly, “exactly do you think you know?”
Linda swallowed but didn’t bow. She was too intoxicated by the attention, by the audience behind her.“Well, sir, it’s… unusual, isn’t it?” she said. “The maid spending so much time in your private study? With the door closed?”A murmur from the hallway confirmed it,more staff had gathered, a crowd.
“This was how maids lost jobs. Not through mistakes, but through whispers”.He took one step forward. The entire hallway went silent.“Let me explain something very clearly,” he said, his voice smooth but lethal. “The only unusual thing here… is that you believe you have the right to speak on matters that do not concern you.”
Linda faltered. “S-sir, I didn’t mean—”“You did,” he cut in. “You meant every word. And you spoke loudly enough to stir up half the house.”A nervous breath spread through the onlookers.“Sir, please,” I whispered, barely able to meet his eyes. “It’s fine. I can address—”“No.”
He didn’t even look at me when he said it.His voice dropped into something protective,
“She will not defend herself to you.”
Shock rippled through the staff. My heart hammered. He took another step, and this time Linda actually stepped back, stumbling slightly.“Let me make one thing clear,” he said. “If I choose to have a conversation with a member of my staff, it is not your place to question it. She looked back at others with shame
“And if I hear another rumor, another negative comment directed at her…”He retorted
“…”you will have me to contend with deal with me”..... Fear held everyone of them felt it all crash through the hallway like a wave.Linda bowed quickly, voice trembling. “Forgive me, sir. It won’t happen again.”“It already has,” he said…… The staff disappeared in seconds, trembling as they go. Linda stayed bowed until he dismissed her with a silent click of his hand.
Now the staff will hate me,” I whispered. “They’ll think I have… influence. Or worse, favors.”“They can think whatever they like,” he said. “Their opinions don’t matter.”.” To m it does", I have to work with them. I have to survive here.”His expression softened for the briefest second. “You will survive.”
“You don’t know that,” I whispered.“I do,” he said, stepping closer“Because I won’t let anyone drive you out.My chest tightened painfully. “Why?”.... He paused. And for the first time, he didn’t look like the billionaire who owned the city.He looked like a man caught between impulse and restraint.“Because,” he said softly, “I don’t want you to leave this house.”
I froze. He held my gaze, steady, unflinching. But before either of us could speak again…..Footsteps thundered down the hallway. His mother’s voice cut through the air like a blade.“What,” she demanded, “is this I’m hearing about staff gossip and you threatening to fire half the household over a maid?”
My stomach dropped. Her tone was cold, calculated, ready for war.And I realized the scandal hadn’t just spread. It had reached the one woman powerful enough to destroy both of us.
