Kate had no intention of acknowledging Alice, instead giving her a cold glance and saying indifferently, " Grandfather, I understand."
Seeing this, Bernard smiled and introduced, " Alice, this is my grandson, Kate, and your husband."
Alice pretended not to know Kate, extending her hand politely and saying, "Hello, it's nice to meet you. My name is Alice."
Kate looked at Alice, a meaningful smile curling at the corner of his lips. " Hello."
Bernard was somewhat surprised.
Kate had always been resistant to interacting with women, and the last woman sent to him had been scared off. But this time, Kate actually smiled at Alice? Bernard felt he had made the right choice. Alice was indeed a suitable candidate. Perhaps Kate's mood would improve, and he might even regain his motivation.
Bernard added, " Alice is a doctor. If you ever feel unwell, you can talk to her. She will help you."
Kate raised an eyebrow, slightly surprised. "A doctor?"
Alice forced a smile. "Yes."
Bernard continued, " Alice, why don't you take a look at Kate's legs? The examinations haven't shown any major issues, but he still can't stand."
Alice muttered under her breath, " Do we even need to check? He's faking it."
Bernard didn't catch what she said and asked, " Alice, what did you say?"
Alice smiled, covering up her words. "I said I can take a look. But you must have already consulted many doctors about Kate's legs, right? If they couldn't find a solution, I probably won't be able to either."
Bernard sighed. "Just give it a try."
Alice crouched in front of Kate and pinched his calf. Kate remained motionless, as if he truly had no sensation. Alice knew he was pretending. She deliberately pressed on a particularly sensitive pressure point and asked, "Does this hurt?"
Kate endured the pain, afraid Bernard would notice, and shook his head. "No, it doesn't hurt."
Alice knew he was holding back and found it somewhat amusing, though she kept her expression neutral. She stood up and said to Bernard, "There's nothing wrong with his legs. The problem lies in his mind."
Bernard immediately nodded. "You're right! It seems your medical skills are excellent! Other doctors have said the same thing!"
Kate's face turned red from the pain. He glared at Alice, cursing her in his mind: *This damn woman, how dare she mess with me?*
Bernard continued, "Today is your wedding day. I've already arranged for the marriage certificate to be processed. The ceremony will have to be modest, given Kate's condition. He doesn't want a grand wedding, but I will ensure you are well provided for. You can rest assured that your life will be secure."
Alice nodded. "Thank you."
Afterward, Alice wheeled Kate into his room. As soon as they entered, Kate suddenly pushed her against the wall. Alice was frightened, as Kate's gaze seemed like it could devour her.
She asked nervously, "What are you doing?"
Kate's hand gripped her neck, his voice icy. "Who sent you? What's your purpose in getting close to me?"
Alice shook her head, struggling. "I don't understand what you're talking about! Let me go, you're hurting me!"
Kate's eyes grew colder. "You should know that my patience has limits. If you don't talk, I'll strangle you and then feed you to the white tiger."
At that moment, Alice saw a white tiger silently appear behind Kate. With his hand around her neck and the tiger in sight, she panicked and fainted.
Kate released his grip and caught Alice's body. Though he refused to admit it, he was undeniably drawn to this woman. Even if she hadn't fainted, he wouldn't have actually killed her.
Yet, Kate's heart was still filled with doubt. *Would Alice become another Leah? Would she betray me like Leah did?*
He looked down at Alice in his arms, his brow furrowed. Her breathing was steady, her face pale, making her appear especially fragile. Kate gently laid her on the bed, his emotions tangled in a complex web.
He knew he couldn't easily trust anyone, especially this woman who had suddenly become his wife. But at the same time, he couldn't ignore the inexplicable pull he felt toward her.
Kate stood by the bed, gazing at Alice's sleeping face, and murmured to himself, "Who are you really? Are you here to help me, or to harm me? Will you betray me like Leah did?"
The atmosphere in the room was heavy and tense, with only the white tiger quietly lying nearby, as if waiting for its master's next move.
Kate took a deep breath and decided to observe Alice's actions for now.
If she truly had ulterior motives, he would not show her any mercy. But if she was sincere toward him... Kate shook his head, dismissing the thought. At this point, he no longer dared to trust anyone easily.
Kate stood by the bed, his gaze complex as he looked at the sleeping Alice. Her breathing was steady, her face pale, making her appear especially fragile. His heart was filled with contradictions—he felt an inexplicable attachment to this woman, yet he couldn't completely let go of his suspicions.
He recalled the scene from the bar last night. Alice's appearance had seemed like a coincidence, but Kate knew all too well that in this family, coincidences often meant conspiracies. His brother, Dunn, had gone to extreme lengths to seize the inheritance, even orchestrating the car accident that had nearly killed him. Kate couldn't help but suspect that Alice might also be a pawn sent by Dunn.
However, Alice's reactions left him puzzled. She clearly knew his legs were fine, yet she hadn't exposed him in front of Bernard. She had even deliberately pressed on a painful spot but cleverly covered it up. Her actions seemed like both a tease and a help. Kate couldn't determine her true intentions.
He looked down at Alice and whispered softly, "Who are you, really? Are you here to help me or to harm me?"
In her sleep, Alice furrowed her brows slightly, as if she could sense his doubts even in her dreams. Kate reached out and gently smoothed her forehead, a wave of tenderness washing over him. He had to admit that he felt an indescribable emotion toward her. But this emotion made him uneasy because he knew that trust was a luxury in this family.
Kate turned and walked to the window, gazing at the night outside, his thoughts in turmoil. He had to remain vigilant and not let himself fall into the trap of betrayal again. Yet, Alice's presence brought him a long-lost warmth, as if she were a beam of light in his dark life.
Just then, Alice stirred slightly and slowly opened her eyes. She saw Kate standing by the window, his silhouette lonely and heavy. She sat up, rubbing her temples, and asked softly, "What... what happened to me?"
Kate didn't turn around, his voice cold. "You fainted."
Alice was stunned for a moment, then remembered what had happened. She glanced at Kate and then at the white tiger in the corner of the room, a wave of fear washing over her. She cautiously asked, "That white tiger... is it your pet?"
Kate turned around, his sharp gaze fixed on her. "It's my companion and my protector."
Alice nodded, trying to calm herself. She knew she had to tread carefully around Kate's suspicions. She took a deep breath and said, "Kate, I know you might not believe me, but I truly mean no harm. I just... I just want to help you."
Kate let out a cold laugh. "Help me? How?"
Alice looked directly into his eyes, speaking earnestly, "I know you're pretending to be sick, and I know why you're doing it. I can help you keep it a secret from everyone, including your grandfather and Dunn. But the condition is that you have to trust me."
Kate's eyes flickered slightly, but his expression quickly turned cold again. "Why should I trust you?"
Alice smiled bitterly. "You can choose not to believe me, but you don't have a better option right now, do you? If you really want to reclaim what's yours, you need an ally. And I might be the only person you can trust."
Kate fell silent for a moment, weighing the pros and cons in his mind. He knew Alice was right, but he still couldn't completely let go of his suspicions. Finally, he said coldly, "Fine, I can trust you for now. But if you dare betray me, I'll make you wish you were dead."
Alice nodded, feeling a sense of relief. She knew this was only the first step, but at least she had won Kate's temporary trust. She stood up, walked over to Kate, and said softly, "I'll prove to you that I'm worthy of your trust."
Kate didn't respond, simply turning and leaving the room. Alice watched his retreating figure, her heart filled with complex emotions. She knew she had been drawn into a dangerous game, but she had no other choice. For survival, and to uncover the secrets surrounding Kate, she had to persevere.
The white tiger in the room slowly stood up and walked over to Alice, gently nuzzling her hand with its head. Alice was startled for a moment, then a faint smile appeared on her face. She patted the tiger's head and murmured, "It seems you're not so scary after all."
The tiger let out a low growl, as if responding to her words. Alice felt a sense of comfort in her heart. At least in this family full of schemes and dangers, she had a white tiger as her companion.
