“She gave birth to a dead child!”
“Yeah, what do you expect? She's cursed!”
“This entire household is cursed!”
“Goddess, no!” shrieked the maid. “Don't say that! We're not cursed!”
“I don't mean us,” the maid jerked her head towards a lifeless-looking Ianthe and a dead baby. “I mean her and the Alpha. An unlucky little family.”
“Well, there's nothing else to do now. We have to get ready for a burial. Poor baby.”
“Burial? Didn’t you hear that the head guard has sent for the Alpha's sister, and she said the baby should be taken to the hospital to ascertain the cause of death?”
“I thought she birthed the child dead!”
“Well, not really. People are sayin—”
I shoved past her in a panic before she could finish her statement and forced my way past the bevvy of people at Ian
