The space between Valentina and Alexander was not good. In the empty boardroom, Valentina could hear Alexander breathing. The white light coming from the windows showed the sharp lines of his face and made long shadows on the table behind him.
Valentina took a step back to make some space between them. She fixed her blazer. Felt better with the solid fabric on her.
"I work for my job, Mr. Alexander ", Valentina said, her voice low and calm. "Intratech hired me to get the company ready to sell shares, not to get hurt because of something that happened over the weekend. What happened at the resort was that one time, and it stays there."
Alexander's eyes got a little smaller watching Valentina move. He did not follow her. He did not look away either. He slowly opened his suit jacket. Put his hands in his pockets, leaning back on the table. He looked relaxed. He still seemed in charge.
"That one time ", he said, like he was trying out the words. He smiled a little. It was cold. "You talk clearly, Ms. Ross. It is a thing for someone who plans things. Let's not say that coming to my boardroom on Monday morning was something you thought about."
"It was not ", Valentina said, looking at him. "If I had known who the man in the lounge was, I would have taken my application back from Intratecy. I do not mix my work life with my life."
"Then we agree ", Alexander said, his voice deep and strong again. "Because this sale of shares is the result of five years of work. It is the future of Intratech and my family's legacy. I will not let it be hurt by rumors or leaks or things that distract us. Do you understand me?"
"I do ", Valentina said. She picked up her tablet. Looked at the plans for the party tonight. "That's why we need to focus on tonight. The live show is a move, but it can hurt us if it's not perfect. I need to know all about the engineering before the guests come at seven."
Alexander looked at her for a time, his face not showing any feelings. The strong feeling between them was gone, hidden under his focus on work. "Ethan will give you the papers. You can check the presentation team. If anyone is not good, take them out."
"Okay ", Valentina said. She turned to leave. Alexander stopped her.
"Ms. Ross."
She looked back at him. Alexander was still leaning on the table, his shape against the city behind him. "Tonight, the media will look for any weakness. Stand near the stage. I want the person who made the plan to watch the reactions."
"I will be in the front row, Mr. Alexander," she said. Left the room.
The rest of the day was a blur of getting ready. Valentina worked in the media center on the forty-fifth floor, making it a war room. There were papers and profiles of the investors on the walls.
Chloe came in with folders and coffee. "The list of guests for the party is final ", she said. "All the big investors and journalists are coming. Valentina people are talking on the lower floors. They say the CFO did not like your plan this morning."
Valentina did not look up, still reading on her monitor. "Sebastian is fashioned, Chloe. He thinks PR is for defense, not for attacking. He is worried. He will do what he's told. Did he okay the budget for the stream?"
"Yes. He said if it goes over budget, it will come from the marketing budget for the next quarter," Chloe said.
"Let him say that ", Valentina said, typing on her computer. "Once the stock price goes up tomorrow, the marketing budget will be the least of his worries. What about the engineering team?"
"Adrian is watching the run on the stage. He says the AI is stable. He wants you to see the interface before the doors open."
Valentina stood up. Got her blazer. "Let's go. I want to see what everyone will see tonight."
The ballroom was changed into a high-tech hall. There were LED lights and a stage with a podium and a big screen.
As Valentina walked down the aisle, she saw Adrian near the tech booth talking to a technician.
"The delay is still twelve milliseconds!" Adrian said, frustrated. "If the CEO clicks and there is a delay on the screen, the press will say it's not real. Fix it!"
"Adrian ", Valentina said, stepping up to the booth.
The VP of Operations turned to her. "Ms. Ross. Tell me your PR team has a plan if the server slows down during the presentation."
"The plan is good, Adrian, so your team has to be good ", Valentina said, looking at the diagnostics display. "What's causing the delay?"
Someone spoke from behind them. "A localized encryption handshake."
Valentina stopped, recognizing Alexander's voice. She turned to see him walking on the stage. He had taken off his suit jacket. Rolled up his sleeves, showing the hair on his arms. He looked like an engineer, not a billionaire.
"The security protocols are running a check on the stream ", Alexander explained, joining them at the booth. "Bypass the firewall for the presentation. We are inside the building, so the risk of a breach is very low."
Adrian nodded, looking at the code. "That solves it. If we drop the handshake, the delay goes down to two milliseconds."
"Do it ", Alexander said quietly. He looked at Valentina. "Ms. Ross. Have the press kits been sent to the media?"
"They went out ten minutes ago ", Valentina said. "The headlines are ready. When you finish the demonstration, the articles will go out over the world."
Alexander checked his watch. "The doors open in two hours. Go get ready, Adrian. I want the team on the floor before the first investor comes."
As Adrian left, Alexander stayed near the tech booth. The technicians moved to the back of the stage, leaving space between Alexander and Valentina.
"You look tired, Valentina ", Alexander said softly.
"I am focused, Mr. Alexander ", she replied, using his name like a shield. "A lot is riding on tonight."
Alexander took a step closer, his eyes intense. "Inside this building, I am the one who carries the weight. You don't have to carry it "
Valentina looked at Alexander, and for a moment her defenses were down. She saw the lines around his eyes and the tension in his broad shoulders. He was a man with a lot of people around him. He was still alone at the top.
"We are here to protect the company ", Valentina said, her voice low and serious. "That is what we are working for."
Alexander looked at her, his jaw getting tighter. "Then let's make sure we win tonight."
By eight o'clock, the Intratech ballroom was filled with people and business leaders. There were cameras flashing and people talking about deals. It was a busy and exciting place.
Valentina walked through the crowd with ease, a glass of water in her hand. She was watching the journalists. Making sure everything was okay. She had changed into a dark green dress that looked great with her skin. Her hair was styled nicely. She looked like a very powerful executive.
The Intratech grand ballroom was like an ocean of powerful people all talking and laughing together. There were important guests, including board members and advisors. Valentina moved through the crowd, shaking hands and smiling. She was very good at this.
Someone spoke from behind her, "This is a turnout, Ms. Ross." It was a voice, and Valentina turned to see Sebastian, the CFO, standing with an important investor. Sebastian was being polite. His eyes were sharp and calculating.
"Thank you, Mr. Sebastian ", Valentina said smoothly. "People like to see what is real, not just hear about it. Showing them the technology makes a difference."
Sebastian took a sip of his drink. Said, "Let's hope the technology works like you say it will. Alexander is taking a risk with your plan. If the market gets scared tomorrow, the board will look at who came up with the plan."
Valentina smiled politely. Firmly. "The board can look at my numbers anytime they want. Excuse me, gentlemen, the presentation is about to start."
She walked away before Sebastian could say anything and made her way to the front row of the VIP section. The lights in the ballroom started to dim. A deep sound filled the room, signaling the start of the event. Everyone got quiet looking at the stage.
A bright light shone on the podium, and Alexander walked out. The applause was loud and long. Alexander moved with confidence and grace. He looked at Valentina for a moment before looking out at the audience.
"Evening, ladies and gentlemen ", Alexander started, his deep voice getting everyone's attention. "Five years ago, Intratech started working on a problem. Tonight, we are not here to show you slides or theories. Tonight we show you the future."
He reached out. Touched the glass interface on the podium. Valentina held her breath, looking at the tech booth in the back. This was a moment for her career and the company's future.
Alexander tapped the screen, and the big LED wall behind him came to life. It showed real-time data from around the world moving and changing fast. The display was amazing. The audience gasped in surprise.
For a second, it was quiet, and then the room erupted in applause. Journalists were typing away on their phones. The news was spreading fast. Valentina smiled, feeling relieved and happy. It was a victory.
As the crowd started to move towards the reception bars, Valentina walked to the side of the stage, waiting for Alexander. He came down surrounded by board members who were congratulating him. He excused himself. Walked towards Valentina.
"Congratulations, Mr. Alexander ", Valentina said, her eyes shining with admiration. "The market is already responding well. The IPO is secure."
Alexander stopped in front of her, looking at her with a shared triumph. "We did it, Valentina. Your plan was perfect."
Then Ethan rushed down the aisle, looking panicked. "Sir, we have an emergency. You need to see this."
Alexander's expression changed to ice. "What is it, Ethan?"
Ethan handed Alexander a tablet, his hand shaking. "A big newspaper just got a message. They sent a verification request to our office. They have pictures, sir."
Valentina's heart sank, feeling dread. "Pictures of what Ethan?"
Alexander looked at the tablet, his eyes widening in shock. He turned the screen towards Valentina. She saw a picture of her and Alexander together taken at the resort on Thursday night. The headline under the picture was: "Intratech's Billionaire CEO Exploits New Corporate Hire on Eve of Historic IPO."
Valentina felt like her world was crashing down. The noise of the crowd faded away. She was left with a cold reality. It was not a scandal; it was a planned attack to destroy her career, the company's value and Alexander's empire.
"Who sent this?" Valentina whispered, her voice barely audible.
Alexander did not answer. He was looking at the screen, calculating the damage. The line between their past and their corporate future was broken, and the countdown to midnight had started.
