Chapter 4 Shadows of Desire

1132 Words
The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, falling on Olivia Moore's face and awakening her from a dream filled with choices. As she opened her eyes, memories of last night flooded back, especially that text message from Alexander, which seemed to still burn on her fingertips. Olivia sat up, taking a deep breath. Today was the day of the Blackwood family's annual charity gala, and as Ethan's fiancée, she had to appear in her most perfect form. Just as she was about to get up, her phone suddenly vibrated. It was a message from Ethan: "Good morning, darling. Sorry, I might not be able to help you prepare for the gala today. There's a situation at the company that needs my personal attention. But don't worry, I'll be there on time. Love you." Olivia stared at the screen, feeling a twinge of disappointment. She replied with a brief message of encouragement, then began her busy day. In the morning, Olivia arrived at her PR firm. As one of the youngest PR directors in New York, her office was always full of energy and tension. "Miss Moore," her assistant Sarah hurried in, "We just received an invitation from Vogue magazine. They want to interview you for a feature on 'The New Generation of Career Women'." Olivia nodded with a smile, "Let's schedule it for next week, Sarah. Today we need to focus on the Blackwood family's charity gala." "Speaking of which," Sarah lowered her voice, "I heard that Alexander Blackwood personally participated in planning this gala. That's quite unusual." Olivia's heart suddenly quickened, but she maintained a calm expression. "Is that so? Then we need to ensure everything is absolutely perfect." All morning, Olivia was dealing with the final details of the gala. When she finally had a moment to catch her breath, it was already 3 PM. Just then, her phone vibrated again. It was a text from an unknown number: "Heard you're busy today. Need any help? —A" Olivia hesitated for a moment, but finally replied: "Thanks for your concern. Everything's under control. See you tonight." A few seconds later, the reply came: "Looking forward to seeing your performance. By the way, blue suits you." Olivia couldn't help but smile, then immediately felt uneasy about her reaction. She shook her head, deciding to refocus on work. At 7 PM, Olivia stood in front of the mirror in the Blackwood family mansion, checking her makeup one last time. She had chosen a deep blue backless gown that perfectly complemented her elegant demeanor. As she descended the stairs, all eyes were drawn to her. Ethan came forward, his eyes sparkling with pride and love. "You're so beautiful," he said softly, placing a kiss on her cheek. Just then, Alexander's voice came from behind: "My brother is right, you look absolutely stunning, Olivia." Olivia turned to see Alexander approaching with two glasses of champagne. He handed her one, his gaze lingering on her. "Blue really does suit you," he said in a low voice, a meaningful smile playing on his lips. Olivia felt her heart rate quicken, but she quickly composed herself. "Thank you, Alex. I heard you were involved in planning this gala?" Alexander nodded: "Yes, I felt I should contribute something to the family. After all," his gaze swept over Ethan, "we all have a responsibility to uphold the Blackwood name." The atmosphere suddenly became tense, but at that moment, Victoria Blackwood gracefully approached. "Children, all the guests have arrived. It's time to start the gala." For the next few hours, Olivia perfectly played the role of the future Blackwood bride. She chatted amiably with guests, gracefully handled every question, while also promoting the charitable theme of the gala. However, she couldn't ignore Alexander's occasional glances. Every time their eyes met, Olivia felt a flutter in her heart. As the gala was nearing its end, Olivia excused herself to freshen up in the restroom. As she stood in front of the mirror touching up her makeup, she suddenly heard the door being pushed open. "Sorry, I thought no one was in here," Alexander's voice came from behind. Olivia turned to find herself alone with Alexander in this small space. The air was thick with a dangerous tension. "You've been exceptional tonight," Alexander said, slowly moving closer. "Everyone's enchanted by you." Olivia forced herself to remain calm: "Thank you, it's also thanks to your planning." Alexander suddenly reached out, gently brushing away a strand of hair from her shoulder. The gesture made Olivia hold her breath. "You know, Olivia," his voice was deep and magnetic, "sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I had met you first." These words struck Olivia like lightning. She knew she should leave immediately, but her feet seemed rooted to the spot. Just then, Ethan's voice came from outside: "Olivia? Are you in there?" The call acted like a bucket of cold water, bringing Olivia back to reality. She quickly stepped back, hurriedly saying, "I have to go." As she left the restroom, Olivia's heart was still racing. She tried to calm her breathing as she walked towards Ethan, who was looking for her. "Darling, are you alright?" Ethan asked with concern, "You look a bit flushed." Olivia forced a smile: "I'm fine, just a little tired maybe." When the gala finally ended, Olivia felt both exhausted and confused. Ethan insisted on driving her home, talking all the way about the success of the gala and their future plans. "I was thinking," Ethan suddenly said, "maybe we should set a wedding date soon. What do you think?" This unexpected proposal caught Olivia off guard. She managed a smile: "We don't need to rush, do we? After all, we have plenty of time." Ethan looked a bit disappointed, but he quickly regained his smile: "You're right. We'll take it slow." Back in her apartment, Olivia immediately collapsed on the sofa, feeling mentally and physically drained. She closed her eyes, her mind constantly replaying the scenes from tonight. Ethan's devotion, Alexander's ambiguity, and her own indescribable internal conflict and desire. She knew she was standing on the edge of a dangerous cliff, one misstep away from falling into an irredeemable abyss. Just then, her phone vibrated once again. Olivia hesitated for a moment before opening the text. "You were like the brightest star in the night sky tonight. Good night, Olivia. —A" Olivia stared at the screen, her inner struggle intensifying. She knew she should delete this message and cut off all contact with Alexander. But her fingers moved uncontrollably across the keyboard: "Thank you. You were the most dazzling presence tonight as well. Good night, Alex." After sending this message, Olivia immediately threw the phone aside, as if it had suddenly become too hot to handle.
