Chapter 6 A Moment of Weakness

1356 Words
The deep night in New York, with neon lights outlining the city's silhouette, resembled a modernist painting. Olivia sat before the floor-to-ceiling window in the top-floor office of Blackwood Group headquarters, her eyes fixed in the distance, but her thoughts drifted to the suffocating family dinner a few days ago. Her fingertips lightly tapped her knee as she recalled Victoria's meaningful warning: "In the Blackwood family, beauty and intelligence are not enough. What you need is loyalty." These words hung over her like a sword. Suddenly, the office door swung open, and Alexander strode in. He loosened his tie, wearing a tired yet still charming smile. "Sorry to keep you waiting, Olivia. This project is more complex than I imagined." Olivia stood up, forcing herself to put on a professional smile. "It's alright, Alexander. I know how important this project is to the company." Alexander walked to her side, and they both gazed down at the city below. Silence spread between them. "You know," Alexander suddenly spoke, his voice deep and magnetic, "sometimes I really envy Ethan." Olivia turned to him in surprise, "Why do you say that?" Alexander gave a bitter smile, "Because he has the freedom to choose. While I, from the day I was born, was destined to carry the expectations of the entire family." Olivia's heart clenched. For the first time, she saw Alexander drop his perfect mask, vulnerable and real. "But you're doing well," Olivia said softly, "George is very pleased with you." Alexander turned, looking directly into Olivia's eyes. "Pleased? Maybe. But you know, Olivia, sometimes I just want to be myself, not the perfect Alexander Blackwood everyone sees." Their gazes met, an indescribable emotion flowing between them. Olivia felt her breathing quicken; she could clearly hear her own rapid heartbeat. Just then, Alexander's phone suddenly rang, breaking the spell-like moment. He glanced at the caller ID, frowning slightly. "Sorry, I have to take this call." Olivia nodded, taking the opportunity to walk towards the desk, trying to calm her erratic heartbeat. She began to flip through project documents, forcing herself to focus on work. After ending the call, Alexander's expression turned grave. "There's a problem," he said, "Our competitors seem to have gotten hold of some inside information." Olivia immediately switched into work mode, "Is there anything I can do to help?" Alexander gave her an appreciative look, "Actually, I do need your help. Your experience in public relations might come in handy." And so, they began working through the night. They discussed strategies, analyzed data, and formulated response plans. During this process, Olivia found herself increasingly drawn to Alexander's intelligence and leadership. He was quick-thinking, decisive, yet humble enough to listen to her opinions. At three in the morning, when they finally completed the initial plan, both were exhausted. Alexander walked to the window, loosened his tie, and unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt. Olivia couldn't help but be attracted by his relaxed and sexy demeanor. "You know, Olivia," Alexander turned, his eyes filled with admiration, "you're really outstanding." Olivia felt her cheeks flush, "Thank you. But this is the result of team effort." Alexander moved closer to her, close enough for her to smell the faint scent of his cologne. "No, Olivia. This isn't just about work. You're special, you have a... magic that fascinates those around you." Olivia's heart raced. She knew she should step back, should say something to break this dangerous atmosphere. But her legs seemed rooted to the spot. Alexander's hand gently caressed her cheek, his touch sending electricity through her entire body. Olivia found it hard to breathe. Her reason was screaming at her to pull away, but deep inside, a voice was calling her to move closer. Alexander slowly lowered his head, and their lips met in an instant. At that moment, the world seemed to stand still. Olivia felt Alexander's lips, soft and warm, with a faint whiskey scent. She should have pushed him away, should have ended this dangerous kiss immediately. But she found herself unable to move, even involuntarily responding. Alexander's hand slid to the back of her neck, deepening the kiss. Olivia felt as if she were floating on a cloud, all her senses ignited. Her hands unconsciously climbed to Alexander's shoulders, feeling his firm muscles. Just then, Ethan's phone ring suddenly sounded, like a thunderbolt pulling them back to reality. Olivia abruptly pushed Alexander away, panting, her eyes full of shock and guilt. With trembling hands, she answered the phone, "Hi, Ethan." "Darling, are you alright? Working so late?" Ethan's voice was full of concern. Olivia struggled to make her voice sound normal, while wiping her lips with the back of her hand, as if this could erase what had just happened. "I'm fine, just... some urgent matters with the project." "Want me to come pick you up?" "No, no need. I'll head home soon." After hanging up, the office sank into a suffocating silence. Alexander stood with his back to her, hands on the windowsill, his shoulder lines tense. "I... I should go," Olivia said softly, her voice full of confusion and regret. She hurriedly gathered her things, as if trying to escape from the place where she had made a grave mistake. Alexander turned around, a flash of pain and regret in his eyes. "Olivia, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have..." Olivia interrupted him, "Don't, Alexander. This was a mistake, one we both shouldn't have made. Let's... let's just pretend it never happened, okay?" As she left the office, Olivia's heart was full of chaos and guilt. The feeling of that kiss still lingered on her lips, reminding her of her betrayal. She loved Ethan. Of this, she was certain. But why could one kiss from Alexander turn her world upside down? Back home, Olivia curled up on the sofa, tears silently falling. She knew she was standing on the edge of a dangerous cliff, one misstep and she would fall into an abyss of no return. But what scared her most was the voice deep inside that kept asking: if Ethan hadn't called at that moment, what choice would she have made? The next morning, Olivia arrived at the company with heavy dark circles under her eyes. She deliberately avoided Alexander's office, diving straight into her own little world. But fate seemed to enjoy playing tricks on her. "Olivia," Ethan's voice came from the doorway, "I heard you worked overtime with Alexander last night?" Olivia's heart skipped a beat, but she looked up calmly, "Yes, there was an urgent project." Ethan walked into the office, crouching in front of her, looking at her with concern, "You look exhausted. Want to take a day off to rest?" Olivia felt a wave of guilt wash over her. Ethan was always so considerate, while she... She shook her head, "I'm fine, really. This project is important, I want to see it through to completion." Ethan smiled, leaning in to plant a gentle kiss on her forehead, "This is why I love you, always so dedicated." Just then, Alexander walked into the office. Seeing the scene before him, his expression immediately became complex. "Sorry to interrupt," his voice was a bit stiff, "Olivia, we need to discuss last night's plan." The atmosphere suddenly became awkward. Ethan stood up, his gaze moving between Alexander and Olivia, seeming to sense something. "Alright, I won't disturb your work then," he said, then turned to Olivia, "I'll pick you up tonight, okay?" Olivia nodded, watching Ethan leave. When only she and Alexander were left in the office, the air seemed to solidify. "About last night..." Alexander began, his voice tinged with uncertainty. Olivia took a deep breath and said firmly, "Alexander, we are professionals. Let's focus on work, shall we?" Alexander looked at her, a flash of hurt in his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure. "You're right. Let's begin then." For the next few hours, they immersed themselves in work. But Olivia could feel that something had changed. Their interactions were no longer as natural as before, every inadvertent eye contact carried a hint of awkwardness and evasion.
