DYNA’S FOOL
AURORA:
Suddenly, I heard the sound of footsteps fast approaching behind me, I turned to see who or what it could be.
“Need a little help there, Princess?” Dyna, my arch-nemesis, mocked, and behind her was Mona, the biggest bully in the pack.
What do they want with me now?
“No, I am doing just fine.” I forced myself up, ignoring the throbbing pain in my leg and leaned in on the tree to support my weight to prove I didn't need their help.
“Poor child,” Dyna walks over to me and crouches down to draw invincible zig zags lines lightly on the bruise.
I held my breath afraid she would press on it to cause me even more pain.
“But you do look like you could use some help. You know, If you had your wolf you wouldn't be in this much pain by now” she adds, standing up to look at me with pity.
“What do you want with me?” I shot, angrily.
“Oh, nothing.” She shrugged. “I was only deep thinking in the woods and heard a wolfless scream so I decided to come check if it was a mouse caught in a trap”.
I flared inside, her words stung coupled with the pain aching my body. But there was nothing I could do, she was stronger and also…right. I was a mouse caught up in their trap. I looked away to hide my bruised emotions.
I try to walk away instead, but my step falters. I took a deep breath and hoped she hadn't seen that.
“Wait!” She calls out, “There's something you must know about your kind.”
***
“Are you sure about what you're saying, Dyna?” I ask, following her along the quiet paths of the woods, limping.
“We can turn back around if you either don't believe in yourself or in the legend of Zila, the big bad wolf who was just like you before he jumped off a cliff. If he were scared, he wouldn't have been the legend by now but an Omega with a gift who never shifted. Have some faith, will you?”
“I am not scared, Dyna, it's just…” I sigh, “never mind.”
Mona laughs mockingly at me, “someone's a scardy wolf, afraid of heights?” She adds.
I roll my eyes. Who even invited this half baked Gamma to the show? Of course, Dyna did. And who am I to refuse her presence, I am only a low life Omega.
But it wouldn't be for long, I pray.
Soon, after tonight, I will walk back these paths as a full red blood werewolf and a ready mate for Lucien.
“We’re here!.” Dyna announces loud enough for me to catch a hint of her excitement, but I ignore her and look down.
“What! Are you sick, Dyna? I can't even see the ground beneath.”
Dyna drags me by the arm further towards the cliff, “Listen to me! Do you want to die or miss your chance with Lucien? Soon, if you do not have your shift, he'll be left with no choice than to pick another mate for himself, and that, you already know, wouldn't be you again!”
“But-”
“No buts, Aurora, just do it!” She yells.
I looked down the cliff again, mists of clouds obscured my vision from completely knowing the ground level from up here.
We hear faint chattering of others in the distance.
“It seems they are heading towards the woods if they aren't already in” Mona informs.
“Why are you suddenly helping me?” I ask, “You've always had eyes set for Lucien and I know You're thrilled to witness my rejection. Are you not afraid that I could kill you when I shift and have him for myself, knowing I'd be stronger and powerful than you are?”
“You already ungrateful wench!” Mona lands a slap across my face, her claws slashed thin through my flesh.
I held my cheeks in pain.
“Come on now, Mona, don't be mean. She's about to become a powerful red blood of our kind, upsetting her would be to our detriment, isn't that correct, Aurora?”. She tries to soothe the burning feel of my cheeks with her hand, but I move my face away.
“As for why I am helping you, the moon goddess visited me in my sleep and commanded me to. If you choose to end me, I'd leave my fate to the moon goddess to decide. It is her order after all and I deserve no mercy for all the wrongs I did you” She adds, sounding remorseful.
What was this, an early atonement?
If the moon goddess had indeed visited her, then this would be my one opportunity to seize.
“Moon goddess, grant me this chance.” I muttered a prayer, my eyes gazing down at the darkness beneath, only focusing on the image in my head of what I'd look like when I climb up this mountain.
Not wanting to be I took a deep breath in, sucking in the fresh earthly scent of the forest air and then, I jumped.
My body felt like it was slicing through cold, pressured air. I look just in time to see the devious look in Dyna's eyes and wicked smile tugging the corners of her lips. Everything slowly becomes out of sight till I only see the top of the cliff where I once stood.
“No!” I cried out once I realised I had been fooled.
I prayed silently for help to somehow come to my rescue as I was rapidly getting closer to my impending doom.
The fog that once obscured my vision from the top slowly blurs out the view of the tall trees and the top of the cliff like smoke.
Bang!
I gritted my teeth as excruciating pain vibrates through my body. My hair gets wet and soaks in the blood oozing from my head. I gasped for air, unable to breathe as my vision started to blur out and all I could see was darkness.
Is this how I end, moon goddess?
