Chapter 4 — The Enemy Inside
Amelia stared at the photograph on her phone.
It showed her and Alexander standing inside the study only minutes earlier.
Someone had taken it from inside the mansion.
“Alexander…”
He took the phone from her.
His expression immediately hardened.
“Everyone out!”
The security guards rushed into the room.
“Search the entire house. Check every camera and every entrance.”
“Yes, sir.”
They disappeared.
Amelia folded her arms.
“You said this house was secure.”
“It is.”
“Clearly, it isn't.”
Alexander looked at the photograph again.
“Someone inside the house is helping them.”
“Or maybe it's you.”
He looked at her.
“You think I took the picture?”
“I don't know what to think.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“If I wanted to hurt you, I wouldn't have saved your life tonight.”
“Maybe you're trying to make me trust you.”
His eyes met hers.
“You really don't trust me.”
“I barely know you.”
Before Alexander could answer, a security guard returned.
“Sir, the cameras were disabled for six minutes.”
“Who had access?”
“Four people.”
“Where is Daniel?”
The guard hesitated.
“He was assigned to the east entrance.”
“Find him.”
Two guards hurried away.
Amelia looked at Alexander.
“Who is Daniel?”
“My head of security.”
“And can you trust him?”
Alexander's expression became cold.
“I thought I could.”
---
Elena remained unconscious in the guest room.
A doctor had examined her and said she was stable.
Amelia sat beside the bed, staring at the woman she had believed was dead for twenty-four years.
“Why did you leave me?” she whispered.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I thought you didn't want me.”
A voice came from the doorway.
“She didn't leave because she didn't want you.”
Amelia turned.
Alexander stood there.
“How do you know?”
“She was trying to protect you.”
“From your family?”
“Yes.”
Amelia looked away.
“I don't know who to believe anymore.”
Alexander walked closer.
“Then don't believe anyone yet.”
She looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
“Find the truth yourself.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Amelia noticed the scar across his knuckles.
“What happened?”
Alexander glanced at his hand.
“When I was younger, my father was attacked.”
“By who?”
“We never found out.”
“Is that why you're investigating my father's death?”
“Yes.”
Amelia stared at him.
“So we're both looking for answers.”
“Maybe that's why we met.”
Her heart skipped.
“That sounded romantic.”
“It wasn't supposed to.”
“Good.”
He smiled.
“Unless you wanted it to be.”
Amelia quickly looked away.
“I didn't.”
Alexander chuckled.
“You're blushing.”
“I'm not.”
“You are.”
“It's hot.”
“It's freezing.”
She glared at him.
“Stop talking.”
For the first time that night, they both laughed.
Then Elena suddenly moved.
“Mom?”
Elena opened her eyes.
Her first reaction was fear.
“Get him away from me.”
Alexander stepped back.
Amelia looked at her mother.
“Why?”
“Because he's a Black.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“My name doesn't make me guilty.”
“You don't know what your family did.”
“I know what I didn't do.”
Elena looked at Amelia.
“Your father trusted the wrong man.”
“Who?”
“Alexander's father.”
Alexander froze.
“My father?”
Elena nodded.
“He betrayed your father.”
“What did he do?”
“I don't have time to explain everything.”
“Then explain something!”
Elena looked toward the door.
“Someone else was involved.”
“Who?”
Before she could answer, the bedroom door opened.
Daniel walked inside.
“Mr. Black.”
Alexander turned.
“Where have you been?”
“Checking the east entrance.”
“You weren't there.”
“There was a problem with the cameras.”
Alexander stared at him.
“You weren't authorized to access them.”
Daniel became nervous.
“I was trying to fix them.”
“Give me your phone.”
Daniel hesitated.
“Now.”
He handed it over.
Alexander checked the phone.
His expression changed.
“You're under arrest.”
Daniel suddenly pulled a gun.
Amelia screamed.
Alexander moved quickly, knocking Daniel's arm aside.
The gun fell.
Two guards rushed in and restrained him.
Alexander grabbed Daniel by the collar.
“Who sent you?”
Daniel laughed.
“You think you've won?”
“Who sent you?”
Daniel looked directly at Amelia.
“The same person who killed her father.”
Amelia's face went pale.
“Who?”
Daniel smiled.
“You'll never find him.”
The guards dragged him away.
Amelia turned to Alexander.
“Why did he say that?”
“I don't know.”
His phone suddenly rang.
Alexander answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Your father wasn't the only Black who made a mistake.”
“Who are you?”
The caller laughed.
Then said:
“Ask Amelia what happened the night she was born.”
The call ended.
Amelia stared at Alexander.
“What happened the night I was born?”
He looked at her.
“I don't know.”
From the bed, Elena whispered:
“I do.”
Amelia rushed to her side.
“Tell me.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“The night you were born…”
She paused.
“…your father wasn't your biological father.”
Amelia froze.
“What?”
Elena reached for her hand.
“I am sorry.”
Amelia shook her head.
“No. That's impossible.”
Alexander stared at Elena.
“Who is her real father?”
Elena looked at him.
Then at Amelia.
Before she could answer, a loud crash came from downstairs.
Someone had broken into the mansion.
Alexander immediately pulled Amelia behind him.
“Stay here.”
But Amelia refused to let go of his hand.
“I'm coming with you.”
Alexander looked at her.
“This is getting dangerous.”
“So is my entire life.”
He nodded.
“Then stay close.”
As they reached the hallway, Amelia suddenly noticed something on the floor.
A small black envelope.
Her name was written on it.
AMELIA CARTER.
She picked it up.
Inside was a photograph.
Amelia stared at it.
It showed her mother holding her as a newborn.
Standing beside them was a man she had never seen before.
But Alexander recognized him immediately.
His face went pale.
“Who is he?” Amelia asked.
Alexander slowly whispered:
“That man…”
He looked at Amelia.
“…is my father.”
To be continued…
