Chapter 3: Bound by the Moon

The warmth of Kai’s arms around her was both comforting and terrifying—like standing too close to a fire, knowing it could burn you, but unable to pull away. Zoe’s cheek pressed against his chest, his heartbeat a steady drum that matched her own, and for a moment, she let herself forget the impossible truth of who he was. But then his fingers brushed the nape of her neck, and a shiver ran down her spine—sharp, electric, a reminder of the wildness beneath his polished exterior. She pulled back slightly, her eyes locking with his. The golden irises glowed faintly in the dim light of her living room, the pupils slit thin, just like the wolf’s. A knot formed in her stomach. “You’re not human,” she whispered, more to herself than to him. Kai’s thumb traced her lower lip, his touch gentle. “No,” he admitted, his voice soft. “But I’m still a man. A man who’s falling in love with you, even if it scares the hell out of both of us.” Zoe leaned into his touch, her resolve wavering. She’d spent her life relying on logic, on science, on the things she could see and touch. But Kai was a contradiction—sharp suits and wild eyes, gentle kisses and possessive growls, a man who spoke of Moon Goddesses and fated bonds like they were as real as the air she breathed. And against all odds, she believed him. Or at least, she wanted to. “Tell me about the pack,” she said, her voice barely audible. If she was going to let him into her life, she needed to understand the world he came from. Kai’s expression darkened, his arms tightening around her. “The Black Moon Pack has lived in Silver Hollow for centuries. We hide in plain sight—my family runs Blackwood Tech, others own businesses in town. We’re a hierarchy: Alphas at the top, then Betas, then Omegas. I’m the Alpha, which means I’m responsible for protecting the pack. But power attracts enemies. My cousin, Jax, has always wanted my position. He’ll stop at nothing to get it.” “And he’ll hurt me to hurt you,” Zoe said, recalling his words from earlier. Kai nodded, his jaw tight. “He will. That’s why I need you close. Why I can’t let you be alone.” Zoe pulled away, crossing her arms over her chest. “So this is what it’s about? You’re not here because you love me—you’re here because you need to protect your Mate to keep your power?” Kai stepped forward, his eyes filled with pain. “That’s not true. I need to protect you because I can’t lose you. The bond between Mates is more than just a title—it’s a part of my soul. If something happens to you, I’ll lose myself. I’ll lose the part of me that’s still human.” Zoe stared at him, her heart aching. She could see the fear in his eyes, the raw vulnerability beneath his tough exterior. And for the first time, she realized that he was just as scared as she was—scared of losing her, scared of the bond that tied them together, scared of the world they were both being forced to navigate. “Okay,” she said finally. “I’ll let you stay. For now. But no more surprises. No more hiding things from me. If we’re going to do this, we do it together.” Kai’s face lit up, a smile spreading across his lips that made her heart skip a beat. “Thank you,” he said, pulling her into his arms again. “I won’t let you down. I promise.” He kissed her again, slower this time, deeper, and Zoe melted into him. The world outside her living room faded away—the forest, the pack, Jax, all of it. All that mattered was Kai’s lips on hers, his arms around her, the promise of a future that was both terrifying and bright. The next morning, Zoe woke up to the smell of coffee and bacon. She stretched, her muscles sore from sleeping on the couch—Kai had insisted on taking the couch, saying he didn’t want to make her uncomfortable, but she’d woken up in his arms, his face buried in her hair. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, and saw Kai in the kitchen, wearing nothing but a pair of her sweatpants that were far too small for him. He was standing at the stove, flipping bacon, his back to her, and Zoe couldn’t help but stare. His body was lean and muscular, his skin tanned, a faint scar running down his left shoulder—the same scar the wolf had. Her heart skipped a beat. He was real. The wolf was real. The bond was real. Kai turned around, noticing her staring, and a smirk spread across his lips. “Good morning, Mate.” Zoe blushed, looking away. “Good morning. You’re up early.” “I’m an Alpha,” he said, walking over to her with a mug of coffee. “I don’t need much sleep. Especially when I have a beautiful woman to wake up to.” He handed her the coffee, and she took it, her fingers brushing his. A jolt of electricity shot through her, and she pulled her hand back, blushing harder. Kai laughed, sitting down next to her. “You’ll get used to it. The bond only gets stronger with time.” Zoe took a sip of coffee, the warmth spreading through her body. “I hope so. Because right now, it’s like walking on eggshells. I don’t know what’s real and what’s not.” Kai reached out, taking her hand in his. His touch was warm and reassuring, and she felt the tension in her shoulders melt away. “I’ll help you. Every step of the way. I’ll show you my world, introduce you to the pack—well, the ones who won’t try to kill you—and prove to you that this is real. That we’re real.” Zoe nodded, squeezing his hand. “Okay. I trust you.” The words came out before she could stop them, and Kai’s eyes lit up. He leaned forward, kissing her forehead, and she closed her eyes, savoring the moment. Later that day, Zoe was at her clinic, checking on a sick fox, when the door chime rang. She looked up, expecting Kai—he’d texted her earlier saying he’d stop by after a meeting—but instead, she saw a woman standing in the doorway. She was tall and beautiful, with long blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. She was wearing a designer dress and expensive heels, and she looked like she didn’t belong in a clinic full of animals. “Can I help you?” Zoe asked, wiping her hands on her scrubs. The woman walked over to her, her nose wrinkling as she looked around the clinic. “You must be Zoe Carter,” she said, her voice cold and dismissive. “Yes,” Zoe said, frowning. “And you are?” “Luna,” the woman said, extending her hand. “Beta of the Black Moon Pack. Kai’s right-hand woman.” Zoe shook her hand, her grip tight. “It’s nice to meet you, Luna. Kai mentioned you’d be stopping by.” Luna pulled her hand back, as if she’d touched something dirty. “Kai’s made a mistake,” she said, her voice sharp. “A human Mate? It’s unheard of. The pack won’t accept you. Jax will use you to take down Kai. You’re a liability.” Zoe’s blood boiled. “I’m not a liability. And Kai seems to think differently.” “Kai is blinded by the bond,” Luna said. “He can’t see what’s right in front of him. You’re not one of us. You’ll never be one of us. And if you care about him, you’ll leave him. Before you get him killed.” Zoe stepped forward, her eyes narrowing. “I’m not leaving him. And if you think you can scare me away, you’re wrong. I’m not afraid of Jax. I’m not afraid of the pack. And I’m not afraid of you.” Luna laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. “You should be. The pack doesn’t tolerate outsiders. Especially not human ones. Mark my words, Zoe Carter. You’ll regret this. You’ll regret ever meeting Kai.” With that, Luna turned and walked out of the clinic, slamming the door behind her. Zoe stood there, her hands shaking with anger. She wasn’t going to let Luna—or anyone else—scare her away. She loved Kai, and she was going to fight for him. For their bond. For their future. Just then, the door chime rang again. Zoe looked up, and Kai walked in. He saw the look on her face, and his expression darkened. “What happened?” he asked, walking over to her. “Luna was here,” Zoe said, her voice trembling. “She told me I’m a liability. That I should leave you. That the pack won’t accept me.” Kai’s jaw tightened, his golden eyes glowing with anger. “I’m sorry,” he said, pulling her into his arms. “I should have warned you about her. She’s loyal to the pack, but she’s stuck in her ways. She doesn’t understand the bond between us.” Zoe rested her head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat. “I’m not leaving you,” she said, her voice firm. “No matter what she says. No matter what the pack says. I’m with you.” Kai kissed the top of her head, his arms tightening around her. “I know,” he said, his voice soft. “And I’m with you. Always.” He pulled back, his eyes locking with hers. “But we need to be careful. Jax is watching. Luna is watching. The pack is watching. We can’t let them see how much we mean to each other. Not yet.” Zoe nodded. “I understand. But I’m not going to hide. I’m your Mate, and I’m proud of it.” Kai smiled, leaning forward to kiss her. “That’s my girl.” As their lips met, Zoe knew that the road ahead would be hard. There would be obstacles, enemies, and doubt. But with Kai by her side, she was ready to face anything. Because together, they were unstoppable. Bound by the moon. Bound by love. Bound forever.
