Episode 2: Steel & Blood
The air inside the flower shop fractured into violence before Clara could even scream.
The lead assassin lunged, his iron blade whistling as it cut through the air, aimed directly at Clara’s throat. But Julian was already moving. He didn't flinch, didn't hesitate his body reacted with the terrifying, lethal precision of a man who had made a career out of killing.
Julian caught the attacker’s wrist mid-swing. With a sickening, audible CRACK, he crushed the bone, snapping the man's radius in half.
The assassin shrieked, dropping his sword. Julian grabbed him by the throat, driving his boots into the stone floor, and slammed the man face-first into the heavy oak counter. The thick timber shattered under the impact. In a fluid motion, Julian ripped a jagged iron dagger from the dying man's belt, spun on his heel, and met the second intruder head-on.
The second assassin thrust a cross-hilted sword toward Julian's ribs. Julian sidestepped, letting the steel graze his damp tunic, and buried the stolen dagger deep into the man’s sternum.
Warm, coppery blood erupted, spraying across the stone floor and splashing against the hem of Clara’s linen apron.
Clara gasped, backing up until her spine hit the cold stone wall. Her hands shook violently, her chest heaving as she watched the effortless, terrifying slaughter unfolding before her eyes. This wasn't a desperate street brawl. "Jules"—the penniless, wounded man she had let inside—moved like a war commander. Cold. Exact. Monstrous.
The third intruder, seeing his comrades slaughtered in seconds, backed toward the shattered doorway, his hands trembling as he raised his weapon. "You... you aren't just some street vagrant," he spat, his voice shaking under his iron helm. "The King said you'd be defenseless!"
Julian stepped slowly over the twitching bodies, his pitch-black eyes fixed on the man. Blood dripped steadily from the dagger in his hand, splashing onto the wet floorboards. A low, dark chuckle escaped his throat as he wiped a streak of blood from his cheekbone with the back of his hand.
"My father is a liar," Julian purred, his voice dropping into a velvet, dangerous register that made the hairs on Clara’s neck stand up. "And you made a fatal mistake entering this room."
In a lightning-fast motion, Julian threw the dagger. The iron blade turned mid-air, sinking hilt-deep into the last assassin’s throat. The man choked, collapsing backward into the mud outside.
Silence returned to the shop, heavy, suffocating, and dripping with blood. The only sounds left were the howling rain outside, the crackle of a distant street lamp, and Clara’s ragged breathing.
Julian turned slowly to face her. His chest heaved beneath his rain-soaked shirt, dark hair falling wildly over his forehead. He looked feral, a lethal predator wrapped in commoner's clothes.
Clara stood frozen, pinned against the wall. A terrifying mixture of fear and an electric, forbidden heat surged through her veins. Her gaze dragged down his broad, muscle-bound frame, taking in his blood-stained hands and the dark, possessive intensity burning in his eyes.
Julian closed the distance between them, his muddy boots crunching on broken glass. He stepped directly into her personal space, trapping her against the wall with his broad shoulders. The sheer physical heat radiating off his body was overwhelming, wrapping around her with the scent of rain, copper, and raw testosterone.
"Are you hurt?" he growled low, his breath hot against her forehead. His large, scarred hand reached up, gripping her chin firmly to force her gaze to meet his.
"N-no," Clara whispered, her pulse hammering against his thumb. Her breasts rose and fell rapidly against her fitted sweater, brushing against his hard chest. "Who are you? They said... they said the King sent you."
Julian’s thumb slid up, pressing firmly against her full bottom lip, smearing a tiny, stray droplet of crimson across her skin. His dark eyes dropped to her mouth, an unyielding desire ripping through him.
"I told you, Clara... dangerous men walk these streets," he rasped, leaning down until his lips hovered a fraction of an inch from hers. "And right now, I am the most dangerous thing in this town."
Before she could form a response, his mouth claimed hers in a rough, bruising kiss.
It was possessive and unyielding, demanding total surrender. Clara gasped into his mouth, her mind screaming at her to push him away, but the physical weight of him, the sheer, dominant power in his grip sent a shiver straight down to her core. Her hands instinctively came up, her fingers knotting into his wet, dark hair, pulling him closer as she met his intensity.
Julian let out a low groan, his arms wrapping around her waist and pulling her soft hips flush against his hardened length through their clothes. He tasted like rain and copper, intoxicating her senses, breaking down every defense she had built over years of surviving in the lower town.
He broke the kiss slowly, resting his forehead against hers, both of them breathing heavily in the dim light.
"They were sent for you as much as me," Julian murmured against her lips, his dark eyes scanning her flushed face. "Your father's debt wasn't silver, Clara. He hid something from the crown. And now, the shadow guild knows you have it."
Clara’s face drained of color. "I don't know what you're talking about... my father was an herbalist—"
CLANG.
A heavy iron bell echoed from the center of the town square, ringing out three sharp, rhythmic strikes.
Julian went dead rigid. That wasn't the town watch. It was the signal of the Red Hand Guild—the most ruthless mercenary syndicate in the realm.
A voice boomed from the rain-soaked street outside, amplified by the archway.
"Prince Julian! We know you're in there with the girl! Deliver her to us, or we burn the building down with her grandmother inside!"
Clara’s hazel eyes filled with absolute horror. "My grandmother... she's upstairs!"
Julian looked toward the front door, then down at Clara. A dark, sinister smile spread across his lips as he reached down, tearing a broadsword from the belt of a dead assassin.
"Stay behind me," Julian growled, his black eyes blazing with lethal intent. "It's time to show these bastards why they should have brought an army."
