Episode 3: Blood in the Streets
The door of the flower shop shattered completely under the violent strike of a heavy iron hammer.
Rain roared through the broken frame as three heavy-set mercenaries clad in black leather and rusted chainmail surged into the entry. Their weapons swung wildly, catching the hanging eucalyptus and dried flower bundles, sending petals scattering like dead leaves across the blood-slicked stone floor.
Julian didn't wait for them to set up a formation.
He moved with devastating, military precision. Slipping under the lead mercenary's wide axe-swing, Julian slammed his elbow into the man’s sternum, driving him backward into his comrade. In the same motion, Julian thrust the stolen shortsword straight through the second attacker’s chest, twisting the iron before yanking it free. Warm, coppery blood sprayed across the wooden counter, splashing against Clara’s white apron as she crouched behind the timber bar.
"Get your grandmother!" Julian roared over the clash of steel, his dark eyes ablaze with raw, lethal focus. "Upstairs! Now!"
Clara didn't hesitate. Shaking off her terror, she bolted up the narrow stairwell, her heart hammering against her ribs.
The remaining mercenary lunged at Julian, raising a jagged, notch-bladed dagger. "You're a dead man, fake prince”
Julian caught the man's wrist mid-strike. The sheer physical pressure of his grip crushed bone, forcing an agonizing scream from the assassin’s mouth. Julian dragged the man down onto his knee and drove the broadsword straight down through his neck, pinning him to the floorboards.
Silence fell inside the ground floor, broken only by the crackle of fire outside.
Julian wiped a mixture of rain and blood from his jawline with his sleeve. Looking out through the shattered shopfront, he saw flickering orange light reflecting in the wet cobblestones—the mercenaries had already torched the timber archway down the street, threatening to engulf the entire quarter in flames.
He turned and bounded up the wooden stairs three at a time.
In the small upper loft, Clara was kneeling beside a bed, wrapping a thick wool blanket around an elderly, frail woman whose face was pale and drawn.
"She can barely walk," Clara cried out, looking up at Julian with tears welling in her dark hazel eyes. "The smoke... it's coming through the floorboards!"
Julian stepped into the room, his towering frame instantly dominating the confined space. He dropped his bloody sword to the floor, leaned over the bed, and lifted Martha cleanly into his massive arms as if she weighed nothing.
"Hold on to me," Julian growled softly to the old woman, before turning his gaze onto Clara. His dark eyes swept over her flushed skin, her heavy breathing, and the sheer vulnerability in her frame. He grabbed her firmly by the waist, pulling her tight against his side. "We leave through the back alley."
They rushed down the narrow rear staircase, bursting out into a dark, rain-soaked passageway just as the front half of the flower shop caved in with a shower of orange sparks and timber.
Clara gasped, watching her life’s work, her home and her sanctuary turn to ash in seconds. Tears spilled down her cheeks, glistening under the firelight.
Julian carried Martha into the shadows of a stone alcove nearby, setting the old woman down safely against a dry alcove wall. He stepped back toward Clara, trapping her against the cold stone of the alley. His chest heaved against hers, his rain-soaked dark hair clinging to his forehead.
"It's gone..." Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she stared at the flames. "Everything I had... it's all gone."
Julian reached out, his thick, scarred fingers gripping her chin firmly, forcing her gaze away from the fire and straight into his piercing, pitch-black eyes. The raw, possessive intensity in his face made her breath hitch.
"Listen to me," Julian growled low, his thumb sliding up to trace her lower lip, smearing the dried drop of blood from earlier. "You are still breathing. And as long as you are beside me, no man in this realm will touch you again without dying for it."
Clara stared up at him, her chest heaving violently against his chest. The proximity, the scent of rain, sweat, and raw masculine dominance radiating from him blurred her fear into something dark, intense, and intoxicating.
"Who are you really, Jules?" she breathed, her hands coming up to press against his damp, rock-hard chest. "Normal men don't fight like monsters. They don't command people like this."
Julian leaned down, his lips brushing against the sensitive shell of her ear, sending a sharp shiver straight down her spine. "I am the only thing standing between you and the grave, Clara. That’s all you need to know for tonight."
Before she could respond, Martha let out a weak, raspy cough from the shadow of the alcove.
"Julian..." the old woman rasped out, her trembling, withered hand reaching toward him from beneath the blanket.
Julian froze. His entire body went rigid.
He slowly turned his head to look down at the dying old woman in the dark alley.
Martha's weak eyes locked onto his face, recognition clear in her gaze despite the dim light. "I know that face... I served your mother in the high palace thirty years ago. You are Prince Julian... the butcher of the court."
Clara’s eyes widened in absolute shock. She looked from her grandmother to Julian, stepping back as if she had been burned.
"Prince?" Clara whispered, her voice trembling as the world tilted around her. "You're... a royal?"
Before Julian could answer or close the distance between them, a low whistle echoed from the far end of the dark alley.
A dozen heavy, iron-armored figures emerged from the fog, their longswords drawn and reflecting the distant fire. At the front of the unit stood a man wearing the silver dragon crest of the Royal High Guard, the King's personal elite executioners.
The commander stepped forward, unbuttoning his heavy cloak, a cold smile touching his lips as he looked at Julian.
"Prince Julian," the commander said smoothly. "His Majesty sent us to deliver a message. Your ninety days are canceled. The King has fallen ill... and your cousin has taken the regent throne. You are now declared a traitor to the crown, dead or alive."
