Episode 4: The Traitor's Blade
Rain fell in heavy torrents, sizzling as it hit the white-hot embers of Clara’s burning shop.
The silver dragon crest on Commander Vance’s armor gleamed under the firelight. Beside him, twelve elite guards stood with swords drawn, forming a tight semicircle around the dark alley.
Clara took a sharp step back, her hands trembling as she looked at Julian. The truth felt like a physical blow, jules wasn't a desperate runaway or a street brawler. He was Prince Julian, the royal family's cold-blooded butcher.
"Julian..." Clara whispered, her voice laced with betrayal. "You lied to me."
Julian didn't turn around to face her. His broad shoulders remained squared toward the royal guard, his hand tightening around the hilt of his stolen blade until his knuckles turned ghost-white.
"I didn't lie to you, Clara," Julian growled low, his dark eyes never leaving the commander. "I just didn't give you a name that would bring a crossbolt through your chest."
"How touching," Commander Vance sneered, taking a step forward as his steel boot crunched over wet rubble. "The ruthless Prince has found a stray pet in the mud. Drop the sword, Your Highness. Your cousin, Regent Cassian, has already signed your execution order. The King is bedridden, silenced by shadow-root poison. The crown is no longer yours."
A dark, terrifying stillness settled over Julian. The mention of his father being poisoned unlocked something primal inside him. A low, wicked laugh escaped his throat, sending a visible chill through the ranks of the armored men facing him.
"Cassian always was an i***t," Julian purred, his voice dropping into a dangerous, velvet register. "He thinks wearing a crown makes him a king. He forgets who taught him how to bleed."
Before Vance could order the charge, Julian lunged.
He didn't fight like a knight constrained by honor; he fought like a demon freed from hell. Julian closed the distance in a fraction of a second, parrying Vance’s heavy downward strike and driving the butt of his hilt straight into the commander's faceplate. Nose-bone shattered under the impact.
As Vance fell backward into the mud, Julian spun, catching the next guard’s sword mid-air with his gauntleted hand, ripping the blade from the man's grip and sliding it straight through his neck joints. Blood spurted, painting the alley stone red.
"Protect the girl!" Julian roared over the chaos, his eyes burning with absolute, dark madness as he hacked through three guards in a flurry of brutal, military strikes.
Clara didn't waste time questioning her instincts. She grabbed her grandmother by the arms, dragging Martha deeper into the dark shadow alcove behind a row of stone barrels. Her heart hammered in her ears. She watched Julian—a monster wrapped in muscle and leather—slaughter the King’s finest men in the narrow passage.
It was terrifying. It was grotesque. And yet, every time a blade swiped near him, a sharp knot of fear tightened in her chest—not for herself, but for him.
In less than two minutes, nine guards lay dead or dying in the mud.
Julian stood panting over Commander Vance, who was coughing up blood against the stone wall. Julian planted his heavy boot onto Vance’s chest, pressing down until the iron breastplate groaned under the weight.
"Who supplied the shadow-root poison to my cousin?" Julian demanded, leaning down, his blood-splattered face looking like a nightmare under the faint moonlight.
Vance choked on his own blood, letting out a wet, mocking laugh. "You... you think this was just Cassian? The whole court wanted you gone, Julian. Even... even the girl’s late father was part of the conspiracy..."
Clara froze in the alcove, her breath catching in her throat. "What?"
Vance glared at Clara with dying eyes. "Her father didn't die of fever... he was executed by your father for smuggling the very poison that's killing the King right now. She’s the daughter of a traitor, Prince!"
Julian’s eyes flicked back to Clara for a fraction of a second.
In that split second of distraction, Vance pulled a hidden glass vial from his belt and slammed it against the cobble floor. A thick, blinding cloud of gray alchemical smoke erupted, filling the narrow alley with a suffocating, stinging mist.
Julian coughed violently, swinging his blade blindly through the smoke, but his steel met only empty air. Vance was gone, dragged away into the fog by the remaining survivors.
When the heavy smoke finally cleared under the beating rain, Julian wiped his eyes, turning back toward the alcove.
"Clara," he rasped out, his chest heaving as he stepped toward her.
Clara stood in the shadows, holding a rusted iron dagger she had pulled from a dead guard's belt. Her hands shook violently, her hazel eyes wild with shock, grief, and confusion as she pointed the blade directly at his chest.
"Stay back," she choked out, tears spilling down her cold cheeks. "My father... my father was executed by your family?"
"Clara, lower the blade," Julian said softly, taking a slow, deliberate step closer, unbothered by the point hovering inches from his tunic.
"Don't touch me!" she screamed, her voice breaking. "You came to my shop... you used me! Was this all part of your game? Is my family just collateral for your crown?!"
Julian didn't stop. He walked straight into the point of the dagger until the tip pressed through his dark shirt, piercing his skin just enough for a tiny droplet of crimson to bead against the fabric over his chest.
He reached out, his massive, blood-stained hand gripping her wrist with unyielding firmness, slowly forcing the dagger down between them. He stepped directly into her personal space, trapping her against the stone wall once more.
"I didn't know who your father was," Julian whispered, his breath hot against her forehead, his dark gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that burned through her panic. "And I don't give a damn about my father's execution orders. But if you want to drive that steel into my heart, Clara... do it now. Because if you don't, you belong to me. And I am going to take you to the palace, tear my cousin's head off, and put you on the throne beside me."
Clara’s breath hitched, her pulse racing wildly as her eyes dropped to his full, blood-flecked lips, then back to his pitch-black eyes. The sheer, terrifying weight of his obsession wrapped around her like a physical chain.
Before she could speak, a sharp, ragged gasp echoed from the alcove floor.
Both of them turned instantly.
Martha was lying on her side, her eyes rolled back into her head, black veins creeping rapidly up her neck and jaw—the unmistakable, fatal sign of contact with the alchemical shadow-smoke Vance had released.
"Grandmother!" Clara dropped the dagger, collapsing to her knees beside the dying woman, sobbing uncontrollably as she held Martha's cold hands. "No, no, no... please!"
Julian knelt beside them, his jaw clenching as he examined the black veins. "It's shadow-root rot. She has less than twelve hours before her lungs collapse."
"Is there a cure?" Clara cried, grabbing Julian's leather sleeve, her pride completely shattering in the face of her grandmother's death. "Please, Jules... Julian... tell me there's a cure!"
Julian looked up toward the towering, dark silhouette of the Imperial Palace rising above the sea-cliffs in the distance.
"There is only one place in the realm that holds the antidote," Julian said, his voice cold as ice. "In the royal vault beneath the King's bedchamber. Inside the very fortress where my cousin is hunting us."
