ADRIA’S POV:
As the ceremony ended and the throne room cleared out, I watched Leo’s every movement. His family stood from their seats as did mine, but before anyone could speak Leo turned his attention to me.
“I am so sorry for his outburst, my love.” He paused studying my gaze for a moment. “Tell me, what is on your mind?”
“Why didn’t you tell me that the meeting you had yesterday had concerned me?” I asked as I stood slowly.
“Well, it shouldn’t have concerned you.” He looked at me apologetically. “I had no…”
Before he could continue to speak I interrupted him quickly. “Well, it concerns me now.”
He watched my every movement as I stepped off of the stage. “Adria, please forgive me. I had no idea he would be brave enough to interrupt the crowning of his Queen.”
“You mean the Queen he doesn’t accept?” I asked staring at him. “The Queen he would rather not have met in the first place.” My voice cracked as I spoke. There my damn emotions go betraying me again.
“Everyone will learn to accept you, I am sure.” He said sadly. It was clear he could feel how hurt I was.
“I was under the impression my daughter would be safe in your hands, Deryn.” Mom said as she finally spoke up.
“She is Queen Dayna. I can assure you. We would never let any harm befall her.” Deryn said as he stepped forward.
“Surely you wouldn’t. I figured her safety would be an unspoken rule in condition to sending her here.” She said watching him in warning.
“Mom, that is enough. I am a big girl and I can handle myself. I don’t need you to fight my battles.” I said trying to get her to keep the peace.
She looked at me in silent warning. “Yes, you are. But I wasn't aware that we were risking your safety.”
“It was only one pack, Dayna. Alone they are as harmless as flies.” Deryn smiled trying to comfort her worries.
“Yes, one pack...for now. Who is to say they won’t sway others to their side? Who is to say they won’t make an attempt on her head? One pack may seem harmless to you now. But who is to say multiple packs wouldn’t pose a bigger threat?” She asked eyeing him up and down as if he was her next target.
“I suppose they would. And if it gets that far, we will handle it. We will keep our kingdom at bay I assure you. She will be kept safe at all costs. I can assure you, her safety is our...it is my top priority.” Leo stepped in as he stepped off the stage and stood next to me.
I couldn’t help but blush as he spoke. My protection was important to him. I found myself smiling sheepishly as I watched him. “Fine, but expect to hear from us again soon. We will be checking up on that...safety of hers from time to time.” Mom smiled noting my response to his statement. She nodded silently and before I could blink, they were gone. The wind weavers in our court were truly quick and efficient.
EMORY’S POV:
“He has said no to me for the last time. Her head will be mine. And while I am at it. I will take his throne as well,” I said walking into my office and throwing the chair that sat at my desk. “Did you see her? That incompetent brat. The way she spoke out against me. Who the hell does she think she is?”
My beta stiffened behind me as it seemed he was contemplating the right words to say. He knew better than to come up with some smart remark...unless he wanted to lose his head. “Well, my alpha. That was a great disrespect she showed towards you in front of everyone. It is understandable why you would be so upset.”
“Damn right it is. She had no right to speak to me the way she did. Someone needs to put her in her place. And what better person to do the job than me?” I smirked at the thought of her blood on my hands.
“Oh, and what is your idea, my Alpha?” Lyall questioned from behind me as he picked my discarded chair up and put it back at my desk.
“It wouldn’t be too difficult to do as we had discussed previously. All I would need is a few packs to stand behind me. The rest are sure to follow. We will prove to Leo that he made the wrong choice. Who knows? We may even prove to the moon goddess she should have chosen someone else as well.” I explained as I sat down.
Lyall nodded silently for a moment before speaking. “But how do you know that other packs will follow your lead?”
I laughed at his idiotic question as I leaned back in my chair. “Because dear Lyall. Fear. They will have that little sliver of doubt in the very back of their mind that I may win this war. And they would hate to be on my bad side when I do win. They would be afraid to die when it is all said and done.”
He nodded as his body tensed up yet again next to me. “I see. I suppose fear would be one way to do it, Alpha.”
“Oh, calm down already. As long as you remain loyal to me, you will be safe.” My laughter boomed through the room. How did I let such a coward be my beta?
“Besides the crown, is there anything you wish to gain from this?” He asked as he stood to my right.
“Of course! Her head is mine.” I smirked as I once again pondered the thought. Her screams filled my imagination. She would regret the day she spoke out of line.
