LEO’S POV:
It seemed so surreal that she wanted to be marked as mine forever. Like a dream come true. It was perfect. But that still didn’t take the edge off of the meeting that was had just a few moments before. Emory seemed to be becoming a real problem. A civil war? Is he really so hell bent on this crown? Only the goddess knows how a kingdom under his regime would suffer.
“Alpha, did Deryn ever tell you who his spy was?” Liekos questioned through the pack link.
“No, he hasn’t. It’s in the best interest for his safety that he remain unnamed. Why?” I explained as I watched Adria still staring at the mark on her neck.
That’s when I heard it for the first time. Her voice responded through the pack link. “It makes sense if Emory is as dangerous as everyone says. If his safety being compromised is the issue, it could mean it is someone of higher rank within his pack.”
“Which would make more senses. It would have to be someone high enough to know all of his plans before they are set in motion. So it would be between the top members of his pack. His beta, gamma or his closest friends among the pack.” I replied as I walked out of the bathroom to sit on the bed.
“Wouldn’t his closest friend be his beta?” Adria asked a little confused.
“Not always, my love. Some packs care more about power and strength. So, the strongest one that the Alpha deems fit becomes the beta.” I replied as I contemplated our move.
The pack link went quiet for a moment as she walked out of the bathroom to join me. I watched her curiously as the worry had come back to her face almost instantly.
She sighed as she sat on the bed. “So, how do we plan to counter this?”
“True followers of the moon goddess as well as followers to Dad will be on our side. They will trust the goddess’ decision in crowning him. They wouldn’t want to offend her by questioning it. But, the only issue I see is recruiting them. If we make our move to soon, word will spread quickly. It would be considered an act of war,” I said as I rubbed her back gently.
She nodded in understanding and leaned back on the bed. “We wouldn’t want that, would we?”
I chuckled a little. “No, we wouldn’t.”
She sat up quickly. “So, you said the pack will be rotating in shifts to keep everyone within the pack safe, right? How do the shifts work?”
“Well, Liekos as my beta took the first shift. I will take a few out on the next shift. It is best to have the Alpha or Beta out on each shift. We will trade out every 4-8 hours.” I sighed as I ran my hand through my hair.
“Can I come with you during the next shift?” She asked as she looked at me sweetly.
“No. I don’t want you in harms way if anything were to happen.” I answered a bit too quickly not even giving it a second thought.
She stood up quickly. “I won’t get in the way, I promise.”
“There is too much of a risk for you to be hurt. I won’t have my mate getting herself hurt. The answer is no. I am sorry. I know you want this. I want to give you everything you want. But I can’t give you this.” I answered again as I watched her.
She paced around the room quickly. “I can take care of myself. I have been trained with my element since I could walk. Just give me a chance Leo.”
I sighed. “Adria, please. Don’t make saying no to you harder than it really has to be.”
“Leo, I am the Luna of this pack. I promised to be the Luna your pack deserves. Do you think Narcia would stand on the sidelines while her pack was in danger? No. She wouldn’t. So why do I have to? I am not some defenseless human. I am the elemental princess of Primordial and the Queen of Lycansbane. I am the Luna of the Lion’s pack. I can do this. I need you to believe in me!” She pleaded as she sat on the bed looking me in the eyes.
I couldn’t help but smile as I listened to her. “It is nice to see you stepping into your role.” I paused for a moment contemplating. “I just...I can’t lose you.”
She paused and looked at me with such loving eyes. “You won’t lose me. I can be useful. If things escalate that far, I can help.” She ran her hand across my cheek gently.
I sighed and began to give in to her a little. “Okay, fine. But there will be some rules to ensure you’re safety if it gets that far.”
She nodded eagerly. “Anything, name them and it is as good as done.”
I chuckled a little. “Well, first off, you stay with me. Second, you do not put yourself into harms way.”
She laughed as she nodded. “Alright, fine. But the same goes for you.”
“Ah, turned it back on me did you? Fair enough.” I smiled and kissed her cheek.
She blushed a little. “Yeah, I suppose I did.” She paused and looked down a little. “How long will we have to rotate in shifts?”
I smiled watching her. “Not long. A day or two probably. Dad is helping me renovate the packhouse a little while he does his and Shilo’s. We are updating our security system and installing cameras to cover every inch of our territories. This is not living. We can’t be in a constant state of fear. That would mean Emory wins. So we are showing him we will still be standing and that we aren’t concerned about his threats.”
She nodded. “That seems like the best plan we have so far.”
I smiled and kissed her softly as I sat and pondered on my thoughts for a moment. I couldn’t let Emory win. Now that Adria has fully accepted her role as the Luna of this pack, it would show Emory that we are unshaken by his threats. One couldn’t help but wonder how far he planned on taking this war idea of his. How many packs would side with him? Would it be enough to even pose a threat? What was it Dad used to say again? Oh yeah...it doesn’t matter the size of the army, but what you do with it that counts.
