DERYN’S POV:
As we watched Emory leave I sighed. I walked over and kissed Narcia gently. “Nolan and I will be right back. The rest of the pack will stay here surrounding the area just to be safe. Shilo will still keep their eyes on Leo and Adria. I have to go speak with someone.”
She kissed me back gently and smiled a little beneath my lips. “If you must go, but be safe...okay?”
I smiled and brushed her still auburn hair from her face gently. “Of course I will baby. Lillian will come in and sit with you. Go ahead and order yourselves some food. Watch a movie. We will be back as soon as possible. I promise.”
I walked out with Nolan quickly as Lillian walked in. I made sure to shut and lock the door on my way out to ensure another incident like this didn’t happen again. I would have to increase security measures. I would ensure this would NEVER happen again. Let’s be honest here, Emory was extremely lucky I didn’t tear him to shreds for such an occurrence. He was getting braver. That was a bad thing.
I pulled out my phone immediately so I could attempt to get a hold of my spy from Emory’s pack. I texted quickly as we walked through the forest. “Meet me at the halfway point between our packhouses. NOW.”
He was almost instant to reply. “I don’t know if I can get out right now. Is this necessary?”
I sighed becoming a little aggravated. “After the surprise I walked into tonight, I have no patience for excuses. Find a way.”
He didn’t reply this time. Nolan sighed. “How do you know he will show, Deryn?”
I laughed as we arrived at the meeting point. “He will show.”
I sat on a stump and waited patiently. Every moment I sat here, was another moment my pack didn’t have their Alpha if there were to be an attack. I tried to push that thought to the back of my mind. I hoped Emory knew better than to attack tonight. But given his break-in earlier...I highly doubted common sense played a role here. Finally. His scent drifted on the wind.
I stood up ready to handle this. “I see you got out. It must not have been too hard...Lyall.”
He stopped in front of me. “It wasn’t exactly easy. Emory is fuming.”
“To be honest, I could care less how mad he is. What I do care about are his plans moving forward. I also need to know how he got into the packhouse.” I sighed as I watched him shift nervously, constantly looking over his shoulder. I sighed watching him. “Lyall, I will know when he is coming. Trust me. I haven’t led you astray this far, have I?”
His body stayed tense as his attention turned to me. “I suppose not. Look, as far as getting into the packhouse, I am not sure how he got in. It was a last-minute decision on his part. But I will try to find out for you. As for the next stage in his plans. He wants to turn packs against the royal family.”
I could feel rage spreading through my veins. My body matched his tension. “He is trying to build an army?”
Lyall sighed as he contemplated the right words to say. “More than that. He wants to start a civil war. He plans on winning this and overthrowing the royal family.”
I let out a low growl. “That will never happen.” I paused for a moment and studied Lyall’s features. “Who’s side will you be on in this war, Lyall?”
Lyall paused for a long moment. “f**k, Deryn. If I am not on Emory’s...I will be dead. If I am not on yours, I betray a friend.”
I laughed a little. “Oh cut it out, Lyall. You know I would protect you.”
He chuckles a little still keeping tense. “And if you can’t? There are just some things in this world that not even you can prevent.”
I smile a little. “Lyall, you know the right choice to make. It is up to you if you stick to it.”
He sighed and nodded. “If I come now, you lose all future information I could have given.”
I nodded in understanding. “I would, but we would always have a way to figure it out.”
“I will come to you when the time is right. Right now, my place is recon.” He answered as he pondered about it for a moment.
“Are you sure about this?” I asked a little worried.
“Yes, I am. This is where you need me right now and it is where I will stay.” He said with a tad more confidence than he had when he arrived.
“Alright, if you need anything let me know. Especially if plans change. Or if your safety is jeopardized.” I advised as I took a step back.
He nodded and turned racing back to Emory’s packhouse. Nolan and I went the opposite direction to get back to ours. We began to pick up the pace just to be safe. As we arrived I walked in to find Narcia asleep on the couch while Lillian finished the movie that they had been watching. I smiled a little watching Narcia sleep blissfully. She looked so peaceful and happy.
“She dozed off a little bit ago. How did everything go with your spy?” Lillian asked as she turned the television off.
“It went well. Well, as good as it could go in the circumstances,” I said as I walked over and picked Narcia up gently.
“Are you ever going to tell the rest of us who this so-called spy is?” She asked as she stood slowly.
“We can’t, not yet at least. This is a very difficult situation. If we were to tell anyone else, it would be easier for Emory to find out. It would jeopardize his safety.” I explained as I cradled Narcia into my chest trying not to wake her. “Nolan, inform Shilo to keep some of his pack posted and to rotate in shifts for protection. We will do the same here. Lillian, inform the pack of an emergency meeting now. I am going to take her to bed and I will meet you all in the boardroom. We have a lot to discuss.”
They nodded and hurried off to do as I instructed. There was no need to wake Narcia right now. She had such a hard day handling the press and Emory tonight. She deserved her rest. But the rest of the pack needed to know of the threat we faced. Tomorrow...Leo would have to know as well. We needed a strategy before it was too late. Emory crossed the line when he threatened my family. A line that he will pay dearly for. And I planned to make sure of it.
