LEO’S POV:
I couldn’t shake the feeling of something seeming...off as the sun rose. I wasn’t able to get much sleep last night. I would never tell Adria that I was worried about Emory as much as she was...maybe even more so. He could be a dangerously cruel man. But...if I were to ever tell her about my concerns, it would only make her feel worse. I wanted her to feel better about this whole mess. Not worse. That was never my intention.
I watched the sunrise bathe her pale skin as she slept so peacefully. Her curves are outlined by the cover. Her auburn hair falling slightly over her face. As I lay with her I heard my bedroom door creak open slowly.
I turned my head slightly to see who dared impose on such a sweet perfect moment only to find Dad standing in the doorway. Just by the look in his eyes, I could tell something was wrong. He rose his hand to keep me from standing as he noted the situation he walked in on. “I need to speak to the both of you. Meet me in the boardroom.” He whispered as softly as he could.
“Dad, if this is about Emory, I don’t want her to worry about that.” I pleaded as I watched him. My heart began to race. What could he be up to now?
“I understand kiddo. But we don’t have a choice. This is something the both of you have to hear and prepare for.” He explained with a pained expression.
I nodded in understanding. “Okay, we will be there shortly.”
He shut the door so silently you couldn’t tell it was open, to begin with. I sighed and slowly went to touch her face to wake her gently. But she sighed before my hand ever touched her.
“I am awake, my love.” She sighed trying to keep her voice even.
I nodded and sat up silently. “How much did you hear baby?”
She sat up and started to climb out of bed. “All of it. I heard the door open. Everyone was trying to be so quiet for my benefit...I didn’t want it to be for nothing.” She smiled softly as she grabbed a light gray dress from the closet and slipped on a pair of flats.
I got out of bed too as she pinned back her long hair. I grabbed a pair of black pants and a gray button-up shirt leaving the few buttons close to the top unbuttoned. I ran the comb through my short hair and slid my shoes on quickly.
She smiled as she watched me. “I will never get used to how incredible you look in shirts like that.”
I chuckled a little and wrapped my arms around her. “Well, I will have to make sure to get more of them then huh?”
She kissed me softly pulling me into her. I couldn’t help letting a small moan slip through my lips. She cleared her throat and swallowed hard as she pulled away slightly. “We should get to the boardroom before we start something we can’t finish right now.”
I smiled a little. “I suppose you are right. If we must go.”
I led her out of the room by her hand slowly and we made our way to the boardroom upstairs on the top floor. As we arrived my eyes scanned the room. Everyone was here. Mom, Aunt Lillian, Uncle Nolan, Dad, and Shilo were all already sitting around the table, leaving the head of the table for myself and Adria.
As we sat down, I glanced at Adria. “I don’t believe you have been formally introduced to some in this room. My beloved, this is my Uncle Nolan as well as my cousin and one of my closest friends, Shilo.”
She gave a courteous smile. “It is lovely to meet you.”
They nodded, each smiling at her and shaking her hand gently. They sat down again and Dad stood. Immediately the mood in the room was tenser than before.
“Leo, Adria, first allow me to apologize for the rude awakening this morning. But I feel as though this matter can’t wait.” Dad explained as he apologized.
“Please, no need to apologize.” Adria was first to reply in such a sweet tone. But her look wore a different expression. Worry.
He smiled noting her gesture. “I do appreciate your understanding. I have called everyone here to discuss Emory.” He surveyed the room taking a glance at everyone’s expressions.
“Dad, what has he done now? Hasn’t he already said his peace?” I asked becoming a little bit more worried than I was when I walked in here.
“Well, he apparently has not.” Dad paused for a moment as he contemplated how to speak about the matter at hand. “Emory came by our packhouse last night. He was already inside by the time we got home. How he got in remains a mystery for now. But I also met with my man on the inside after Emory had left. Apparently, Emory was not happy with me standing my ground on the decision to keep her on the throne, as well as my decision to not start a needless war with her family.” As he spoke Adria tensed up next to me.
“So, it wouldn’t be good enough if I were to step down willingly. But he wants my kingdom as well.” It was more of a hushed statement than a question.
Dad looked down apologetically. “Yes, that is what he wants. But because we would never let that happen, to you or your family, he is outraged. So much so, he is trying to gather support from other packs. Enough support to start...to go to war.”
I stood up confused and outraged myself. “A civil war? Are you kidding? He actually wants to go there with me?”
Dad sighed and made eye contact with me. “He wants to kill and overthrow the royal family...to claim the throne for himself.”
A low growl ripped from my lips. “He won’t get the chance to do that.”
“We won’t let him get a chance to do so. But what we do need, is a counteractive plan to fight this.” Mom warned as she calmly stayed in her seat. “Leo, we are always on your side. We want to protect Adria as much as you do. But wars aren’t won because we want them to be. We need a plan.”
I sighed knowing she was right. “Okay, give me a bit to think. We will reconvene to come up with counteractive measures now that this has been brought to my attention.”
Dad nodded “Of course. Today wasn’t about a plan. It was more so we could start thinking of one. We will always be in touch. Just...be careful. If Emory had the balls to sneak into my packhouse, nothing is stopping him from sneaking in here.”
I nodded in understanding as everyone left. I sighed with so many thoughts going through my head. A civil war. I knew he had mentioned it before. But I thought it was all just part of his tantrum and he was blowing off steam. I wouldn’t let him harm those I love. Then there is the conflict of my reputation as King with a civil war just weeks after the coronation. I glanced over at Adria slightly. I couldn’t care less about this throne or my reputation as long as no harm came to the sweet angel by my side. Now that we have been warned of his plans, we have time to handle this before it gets too far. How we handle this, however, is the question at hand.
