ADRIA’S POV:
As I awoke the next morning, my thoughts still focused on the perfect date from the night before. I felt nothing but emptiness next to me on the bed. And then it dawned on me. It was coronation day. I felt a sudden sense of dread spread through me. Of course. How could I forget such an important day. Leo said the royals from the surrounding countries wouldn’t be coming. Mainly because they should be just arriving to their homes and it seemed cruel to force them to travel again.
If luck served me well, it should only be my family and the kingdom of Lycansbane. Well, the whole kingdom I wouldn’t consider lucky to be there...but it is as tradition commands. I sighed and sat up quickly allowing my eyes to adjust to the light shining through the opened window.
As I stood I noticed yet again an outfit laid neatly on the dresser. My dress for the coronation. It was a beautiful royal blue fading into black. A symbol of our kingdoms uniting. I ran my hands across the delicate fabric and check the time. An hour until the coronation. So much dread ran through me about a 5 minute ceremony. It seemed silly, I know. But I just couldn’t seem to calm myself.
I sighed and began to dress myself in the long flowing gown. The blue was even more beautiful in the light than it was just sitting there. It was so captivating. The blue on the black reminded me so much of how the moon shown so brilliant last night on our date. I felt my cheeks blush a little as I recalled the night before yet again.
I strapped on my silver high heel shoes that seemed to shimmer beneath the light. My heart began to thud within my chest as I curled my hair slowly and placed my tiara on my head. This was the day I have been born and bred for. My hands began to shake and I attempted with everything I had to keep them steady.
I glanced at the time once more as I struggled to even my breathing. It was already time. Hopefully I could find my way there without looking like an i***t and getting lost...again. I suddenly became extremely grateful that he hadn’t woken me for breakfast. My stomach was turning. The last thing I wanted was to vomit on stage.
I walked out of my room silently and to my surprise, the halls were completely silent. Everyone must already be in their positions and waiting for me to get to the stage so the ceremony could start. I sighed and walked down the halls nervously. I had spent two days now memorizing every single detail on how to get to the throne room. I could only hope that my memory served me well today.
As I walked up to the throne room I took a deep steadying breath as I heard music begin to play. It was a lighting humming of drums. Nothing more. I decided to just bite the bullet and finally pushed open the heavy doors of the throne room. From the corner of my eyes as I walked down the long trail laid out for me, I could see a multitude of faces that I couldn't recognize.
As I approached the stage on which the thrown sat and of course, Leo stood smiling, I finally passed the end of the staring eyes which were his pack, his parents pack, and of course. My family.
As I approached the stage, Leo held his hand out gently to grab mine. He helped me up and sat me in the Queen’s throne.
As I sat down he cleared his throat so he could begin speaking. “Today we are gathered here today to crown the second Queen of Lycansbane.” I listened to his every word and sat up straight as my eyes scanned across the crowd. I couldn’t help but notice there was a section that had not been filled. Had someone not came? “Adria, do you accept the responsibility of being the Luna Queen of Lycansbane?” Leo asked as he snapped my focus back to him in an instant.
“I do,” I said as I sat in the throne waiting for this whole thing to be over. I hated having all eyes on me.
“Do you, Adria, Princess of Primordial, agree to put the lives of the people in this kingdom ahead of your own, to ensure their happiness and safety among all things?” Leo smiled as he watched my every movement.
“I do,” I said as I attempted to clear my throat.
His mother walks up and hands him the Queen’s crown that had been made for me. She smiled and nodded to me as she took her seat again. Leo held the crown in his hands smiling a little.
“Now, before I crown our Queen, does anyone have an objection to make? Speak now, or let it be.” He announced as his eyes scanned the crowd.
My heart began to thud in my chest. When a foreigner is crowned as the new royal of a kingdom that is not their own, it is necessary to ensure the whole kingdom be on the same page. If an objection was made, it would be up to the current King as well as the previous royals, to decide whether the objection was valid enough to stop the coronation.
As the room remained silent, my heart began to return to normal speed. The doors to the throne roomed slammed open as a huge, broad, older man with silver hair appeared in the door way.
“Well, thank you so much for the kind offer, my King. Considering my objection wasn’t taken seriously during the meeting yesterday, I will make it again. Now.” He said as he approached the stage quickly.
LEO’S POV:
I could sense Adria’s body tensing next to me as he spoke. “Emory, on what grounds does your objection stand?”
Emory laughed. “On the grounds that her kind doesn’t belong here of course. The goddess did not work so hard to shield wolves from outsiders just to allow an outsider to gain control over the throne.” He growled as he spoke.
I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want to lose my mate to appease a few stubborn old men. But the threat of a civil war a mere week after I inherited the throne didn’t seem like the right choice either. I glanced to the crowd to see my father’s eyes staring at me. He nodded in silent support of my decision. Our conversation from the previous night played in my head. He would support my decision. My whole family would.
“Your objection is heard, Emory...and it is denied,” I said keeping my voice even. I felt Adria’s gaze on me as I spoke.
“On what grounds do you think you have the right to deny my objection?” Emory asked as he gritted his teeth.
“On the grounds of your outdated beliefs.” I paused as I pondered what I would say next. “My father has ran this country for years, yet no one has questioned anything he had decided. I am the first born son of this kingdom. Born beneath the moon goddess as her chosen king. Surely she knew I would make the right decision to rule her kingdom as it should be. If she has faith in me, and you do not, how can you call yourself her devoted follower?”
Emory scoffed as he stared me up and down. “Well, I find it hard to believe she entrusted it to a child. I am asking you once more to consider my objection.”
“Like I stated before, nothing will change. Your objection is denied.” I ensured the authority in my voice as I spoke.
As expected, he turned to my father. “Deryn, speak some sense into your child. Surely you know my objection holds great merit.”
Dad stood from his seat with an aggravated look on his face. “Your KING said your objection has been denied. I, as your former King, stand by his decision. Most importantly, I stand by my SON. And I advise you to treat your king with the same respect you attempt to show me.”
Adria sat in the throne not moving and silent as she watched the scene fold out before her. Emory turned his attention to her quickly. “You are not fit to take that throne. Mark my words. They will regret the day they denied to see that fact. They will regret the day you ever stepped foot on these grounds.”
“Fact?” I heard Adria’s voice as she stood from her seat. “A fact is something proven. Tell me, did you bring the text from which you pulled this fact from? Or did you only bring your...outdated opinion?” She paused waiting for him to answer, then she seemed to think better of it deciding to not give him a chance to speak. “Ah, just as I had thought. An Alpha past his prime had only disrupted the ceremony with an outrageous opinion expecting the king to stand with him. Hm, despite your age, you seem like nothing but a little boy throwing a tantrum at the feet of those in authority. I believe you have made enough of a scene here. Don’t you? Leave willingly, or I will have you removed.”
Before Emory could speak or grasp what had just happened I found myself stepping in front of Adria protectively. “Shilo, will you please remove Emory from the pack house?”
Shilo stood silently and squeezed himself between Emory and the stage quickly. “Alright, Emory. Let’s go.” He escorted Emory out of my sight before he could even speak. All I heard was angry whispers come from his mouth, probably cursing Shilo for taking my side as he did yesterday.
I gently grabbed Adria’s hand in mine. I ushered her to the throne that was rightfully hers and smiled keeping the crown in my unoccupied hand. “Now, without further delay, I now pronounce you as Adria, Queen of Lycansbane!”
