Lawson
I didn't believe her for a second. But she knew something she shouldn't have and that was enough to start transferring tonight. In trying to find out what she knew about my company, I had almost forgotten that she may not be just acting by herself but with Oscar.
I thought she was using him. What if they were conniving together to get at me?
I took my phone out and made as much distance between us as possible without losing sight of her and called my right hand.
"You do have a reason to call me now, right?" he answered.
"Tell your date you will be contacting her soon"
"I am trying to have a relationship, not to hire a new secretary," he exclaimed. "By the way, I do have a secretary. Why do you keep on calling me when you can call her? You need to stop invading my personal time and begin reflecting on your..."
"The contract has been leaked". I stopped him
"Which contract?" he asked hesitantly after a second.
"THE contract" I said, emphasizing the "the".
"That's impossible. Only five of us knew about that."
"There is more. They know about the warehouse, the components, even the transfer"
" What?!!" He was screaming now.
Then I heard him forgive himself and start walking.
" OK, start talking. Who are they?"
Now he meant business. John wasn't just my right hand because he was competent in his field. There was nothing wrong with that but there was more. John has an analytical mind beyond normal. He was always thinking at least 10 steps ahead. He knew all about risks, inconveniences, even treason that may occur and always found a way to succeed. He was the one who told me that someday I would have to deal with my half brother inside the company. As he saw it, my grandfather would have to give him something so that he wouldn't challenge my rights to be the CEO of T enterprises. He said I would have to put my people discreetly at strategic points inside the administration so I could win the battle to come.
"Be sure no one finds them because when s**t hits the fan, you may find that they have been bought by others. Never forget that everyone has a breaking point." That was what he said then.
I followed his advice and even set up branches in support of the main house. The warehouse was one of them, an important one. Almost everything in that deal was his doing and he was sure everything was safe and set.
I had known him for fifteen years and he had never been wrong. ever.
"They may be my half-brother, his wife-to-be and the in-laws from hell."
" There is so much wrong in that sentence, I don't even know where to start asking."
"That makes two of us."
"How do you know they found out? Isn't he supposed to be on his honeymoon?"
He was. He had used the company's money to pay for his expenses and now Lawson knew that his new hired accountant's secretary was one of his. John was the one who convinced him to keep her.
" Better the devil, you know," he had said.
"He may be, but his wife is here with me." I responded, checking on her.
I didn't want her going anywhere I couldn't see and causing some mayhem. I knew she was hurting because the nurse told me so. But I wasn't a monster. Contrary to what I had made her believe, I wasn't holding her painkillers to make her suffer. They gave her morphine at the hospital and the nurse said to look out for side effects and if they appeared, I should give her the medication to stop the morphine's effect and wait one hour before giving her an Advil. She may overdose otherwise.
I didn't cause her to suffer pain, I was just using it. Like I said, not a monster.
I looked at my watch, twenty minutes left. Then I noticed the silence on the phone.
"John?"
"Excuse me. I swear I heard you say your half-brother's wife is there, right now, with you. When she should be on her honeymoon"
"She didn't get married."
"Of course. How can I miss something that important?"
"Are you using sarcasm on me?"
"I wouldn't dare. would i?"
"Yes" I answered.
"Oh yes, you can bet on that. What is going on there? Why is she with you? How come you are talking business? Gosh are you going to announce to me you steeled your brother's wife?" he asked relentlessly,
"Half-brother" I rectified.
"You are driving me crazy."
I smiled.
"Fix the situation and I will give you all the juicy details later. You know what to do, right?"
"Stop insulting me. I do better at my job than you at yours!" I grumbled. "I texted the team when we were talking and they would move everything within three hours."
I started relaxing knowing everything was once again under control. I needed to find out what Francine knew about the warehouse and how, but that could wait for tomorrow.
"Now I want my juicy details",
"Tomorrow"
"You are a mean boss" he said before hanging up.
I smiled again. He would be so proud of hanging up first. He always complained that I was just saying whatever I wanted to say to someone, then hanging up by myself. I put my phone on the bar cabinet and walked inside the living room again.
She was lying on the sofa. The plaid was up to her stomach and with her coat open, I could see her shirt. A Pokemon limited edition yellow shirt, with a picture of some creature on it. They call it Pikachu. That was what my secretary told me, since she had bought the same for her seven-year-old daughter. Really. That woman must have been a terrible jail bait.
I tilted my head. Maybe she still was. I knew nothing about her.
I went to wake her up when my phone beeped. I frowned and went to pick it up. It was a government alert. The forecasts had changed. It seemed that the tornado would actually hit the East coast, not the west one, but they still presumed there would not be much damage.
"presumed". "not much damage". They weren't that sure anymore.
I made another call.
"Sunshine to you too! What can I do for you?" John answered.
"I want you there to supervise the transfer."
" What is wrong?"
I could hear him moving.
"I have a bad feeling. Take the jet."
"Not the jet. They are under a storm there. Quite a fierce one. No taking off and no landing."
"A storm?"
"yeah. I am taking the high-speed train."
A tornado changing course, a storm hitting fiercely, a woman who seemed to know too much. I looked towards the living room. This was crazy, but what if?
"John. You may call me crazy later, but I think there is going to be a flood in that region."
"o...kay"
"I need you to call for a crisis."
"You need to understand that if nothing happened, that could be very damaging to your position in the company. I would advise against it. Now we can help some people, even just with the task team, and we can put our reserve of first aid furniture on the train with me without many people knowing. If there is nothing, no one will care and if there is something, we could hold the fort with that until help arrives."
I had always trusted John's opinion because he had never been wrong before. I could disregard that woman knowing about the warehouse. It was too much of a coincidence and if it looks like a duck, if it swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck.
" I think you are right. Let's do that. I will be there tomorrow." I needed someone to guard my prisoner before leaving too.
"I will arrange it right now."
He hung up first and I walked towards the small woman on my sofa. It was time for her to take her painkillers and I forced myself not to think about anything else.
