I was screwed.
It wasn’t a nightmare. Or maybe I was still dreaming, but I didn’t think so. But to be sure, I pinched myself and… yep. Not a dream.
“I think I am going to throw up”, I told myself before running into the bathroom.
After vomiting whatever I had eaten the night before, my stomach was upside down. I sat there for a moment, trying to rearrange my thoughts. I was kind of shocked, I may say. I mean, I died. I f...ing died. I cupped my mouth with my hands and realised that they were trembling. All my body was trembling. Gosh I died.
I could have stayed there all day long, maybe even for weeks, if I hadn’t heard her coming. Penny.
She will be here any second now. My sweet sister, the one who loved me the must in this world. The one who… killed me?
I could hear her talking outside the door.
“Oh yes, I’m helping Francine. You know how she is. Always trying to get all the attention”
She was talking to someone I couldn’t hear.
“Please, don’t even make me start with that one. Mom and I had to choose the wedding dress. Her taste is just…” I didn’t hear the rest.
She was moving away, maybe to gossip a little more, but that was my time of grace.
I needed to get out.
I went to the bedroom, put on black jeans and a shirt and my coat.
Yes. My door was locked but not my windows. My room was on the ground floor of our two-story house with no safety bars on the windows. I felt like a thief getting out of my own home through the windows, but really, what could I have done? I was just thinking about escaping death, which seemed to me like it was going to occur pretty soon.
Once outside, my mind just went crazy. What if they already knew I had escaped? What if they gave chase? Were they going to hold me without my consent? Where was I going to go anyway? All my friends were also Penny’s friends and they were invited to this wedding. My wedding.
I started running to the back of the house. People were already coming and I couldn’t risk meeting someone invited, they would remember me. The catering team was already coming and going through the opened back door. I slowed down when nearing the door. I could hear the wedding planner giving orders and screaming at the top of her lungs. She should have been singing, she had zero patience.
Anyway, the point is, no one saw me leaving and I started running again. First I was going to put as much distance as possible between me and death, then I would think about the rest. I crossed the road without looking, heard tires squealing. Something bumped against my hip, hard. Next thing I knew, I was lying down and trying to catch my breath. Seems like death had found me first.
“Miss, are you alright?” Someone was asking me.
I couldn’t talk. I knew the car must not have bumped me that hard but I still felt like I was run over.
“Let me call for help and you will be taken to the hospital”
That sentence unclouded my mind and spurred me into action.
“N..o!” I took a deep breath and tried again.
“No.”
“What do you mean no, you can’t even talk. Stay down, my car hit you pretty hard, you could have broken bones.”
“Please, no one.”
I had turned on my back with my eyes closed and my teeth clenched, when he was still talking. I really did hope I had no fractures.
“Yes, I hit someone with my car. We are…”
He was calling someone. I was going to be found if I didn’t do something.
To hell with the pain. I was still alive and I was going to. Stay. Alive. Thank you very much. If I couldn’t run, I would crawl.
I turned to my stomach and started crawling.
“Ouch!” What the… why was the asphalt that hard? I was going to end up worse than now.
“What do you think you are doing?” he said.
Yeah! It was a male voice. And he put his hand on my back, stopping my progression.
“You need help”
“Escape”
“… you mean you are running?” He said, his hand still on my back.
I was losing strength by every minute.
“ Yes…please.”
For a while he didn’t say a thing, so I tried crawling again. But my injured hip bumped into something and I just saw white stars before everything went dark.
There was something beeping.
That was the first thing I heard when I regained consciousness. Then the smell, disinfectant. I was at the hospital.
I opened my eyes and tried looking around me. I was in a white room by myself. There was a device fixed on my right hand, the one which was beeping. There was an infusion on the left one. I was a little confused. How did I end up here?
“I see you opened your eyes.”
I turned my head toward the voice and my heart skipped a beat. Like a flash, everything came crashing into my mind. My body started trembling and my eyes crying. I had been found because in front of me was standing Oscar’s brother. Lawson Dupré.
The nurse rushed inside to examine me. She stopped the beeping which was going crazy and injected something into my infusion.
"Madam, you need to calm down. You are having an anxiety attack. Don't worry, you are safe at the hospital." She tried to soothe me.
I closed my eyes and tried to breathe like someone who wasn't going to die.
"There are no fractures and as soon as you are calm, your husband will be taking you home."
wait a minute. What?
I opened my eyes again but the nurse was gone and I was alone. With Oscar's brother. apparently my husband.
"You didn't have any identity on you, I needed to explain why I was at the hospital with an unknown woman I had just hit with my car." He said before sitting next to me.
"Telling them you were my wife was the safest way".
He didn't seem to know who I was. How could it be? In my nightmare, the first time I saw him was on my wedding day. But he hated me at sight. I always thought he knew me well before. Was i mistaken?
"My name is Lawson Dupré. And you?"
"Francine."
"Nice to meet you. Now that you have woken, would you mind explaining to me why I couldn't wait for an ambulance?"
That got all my attention.
"Did someone see us? anyone?"
"No one. We were by ourselves on that road and no one saw me take you."
"Thank God!" I sighted
He c****d his head to the left.
"Have we met before?"
Aaaaand i was tense again.
"I don't think so... Why?"
He just looked at me then shrugged.
"I will tell the nurse we are ready to go."
"Thank you"
He looked for a moment then went out.
After a moment, the nurse went back, removed my infusion and gave me recommendations for the night.
I went with Lawson to the parking lot and he opened the door of a charcoal blue lamborghini and signaled me to get inside.
"I can go to the train station by myself"
" Get in or I will take you back to the hospital for the night" he ordered.
That damned Alpha attitude. But I needed to get to the train station.
I got into the car and he started on the road. Ten minutes and three train stops later, I turned to him.
"I think you passed the train station?"
"We need to talk."
I started sweating.
"A...about what?"
"You tell me what we need to talk about. Francine Dubois." He said without looking at me.
Oh God. He knew.
