Chapter eighteen

"Doctor! He's waking up!" Darian said to the doctor and they both rushed into his ward.

He checked him for a while and took off the oxygen mask. Kane slowly opened his eyes and looked around for a while. He was confused and didn't understand anything for a few minutes, then it all rushed back to him like a splash of water on his brain.

Everything that happened before came back to him. Darian was overjoyed.

"Master! Master, can you hear me?! Can you see me?"

Kane looked at Darian for a while and groaned in pain.

"Da….Darian…" he said as he struggled. The doctor raised the level of his bed a bit, so he could be in a relaxed sitting position.

"Daddy!" Sultan suddenly squealed with joy. Kane turned to him and his eyes widened.

"Sul…tan?!" he groaned again. His voice was so dry and hoarse. Sultan beamed at him with glowing eyes. He rushed into his arms and Kane hugged him tightly, holding him so close to himself. He was overjoyed to see his dear son again. His heart exploded with so many emotions as they hugged.

"Sultan…My son!" Kane whispered in tears as he cupped his little face and he smiled broadly. His face had brightened up and he looked so adorable.

"Daddy! I missed you so much! I was so afraid…I thought I will not see you again daddy!" he said as tears welled up in his eyes.

Kane smiled tearfully and hugged him again. Darian smiled as he watched them. It was a heartwarming sight. Caitlin stood in a corner, feeling so ashamed of herself. She couldn't help but hide her face with her hands as she cried.

"Where's…" Kane stopped as he set his eyes on her. Their eyes met and she quickly looked away as she sobbed even more. Kane stared at her sadly. He knew she was feeling so much guilt, but he didn't want her to feel that way. He wished he could get on his feet and hug her to put her at ease.

"I think you're all better now sir. You just need some time to recuperate, then you can go." the doctor said and Kane sighed silently with exhaustion.

He despised staying in the hospital, but he had no choice now. Besides, he couldn't even stand. He was just so happy that Sultan was there with him. He couldn't let go of the boy and held him in his arms all day.

Kane noticed that Caitlin had lost weight. She looked pale and her eyes were sunken. He didn't say a word to her however and she tried as much as possible not to make eye contact with him. Her guilt had arrested her so much. Darian knew he had to give them some space to make out, so he left them alone.

Sultan sat beside Kane on the bed and he stroked his soft hair gently. He had never been so happy. He loved his daddy so much. Kane wouldn't take his eyes off Caitlin and it hurt her even more.

"Caitlin…" he called softly and she turned in his direction, but didn't look at him.

"Please….please don't look at me like that….I already feel guilty about everything that's happened….I'm sure you already hate me so much." she sobbed with her hand over her mouth.

"Caitlin….I don't hate you…and I would never judge you…"

"How can you say that?! It's all my fault! It's my fault that this happened to you! It's all my…." she whispered in tears and covered her mouth with her hands as hot tears flooded her eyes.

"Caitlin…" he called softly again.

"Please come closer," he said and she looked at him for a while and reluctantly agreed. She sat on the bed but kept a little distance. He slowly reached for her hand, holding it gently and she was shocked.

"Caitlin….please look at me," he said most soothingly and she slowly turned to him. Their eyes met and all she could see was affection in his eyes. He wasn't nursing any bad feelings about her.

"I would never judge you, Caitlin. What happened wasn't your fault, it never was."

"How can you just let it go like that? Why aren't you sending me away from you like I did…" before she could complete her statement, he pulled her to himself and hugged her. Caitlin was so shocked. He held her close as he hugged her. Caitlin felt a warm sensation rush up her spine. It felt so good to be in his arms. He both held Caitlin and Sultan to himself for a long while, then let go of them. He smiled at her and slowly wiped the tears off her cheeks. Caitlin felt her heart thump loudly. All the pain and sorrows four years ago were suddenly forgotten.

"Thank you for letting me hold my son," he added and Caitlin smiled tearfully. Sultan was happy to see his mommy and daddy make out. He had wished for this moment for a long time now and it was finally here.

"Mummy….is he my daddy?!" he asked again.

Caitlin thought for a while. There was certainly no reason to deny it anymore.

"Yes, yes he's your father."

Kane was shocked that she had finally admitted the truth.

Sultan was so excited.

"Really?! Yes! I knew it!" he shouted childishly and Kane chuckled.

"I'm so sorry for leaving you all this time. I promise I'll never leave again." Kane said.

"Really daddy?!" he beamed with cute eyes.

Kane nodded and Sultan hugged him. Caitlin was curious about one thing though.

"Kane…how did you know that… Sultan and I were in trouble?" she asked curiously and Kane smiled slightly.

"Even though you told me to stay away from you and Sultan, I just couldn't. I felt that you both needed help so I sent some of my men to spy on you both for a while. I was enraged when I found out that man was blackmailing you, and I knew I had to come after you." he explained and Caitlin looked at him with teary eyes.

"Thank you so much for everything….If you hadn't come… Who knows what would've happened?!" she sobbed uncontrollably and he pulled her into his arms and hugged her warmly. She couldn't help but cry helplessly on his shoulder.

"You don't have to cry, Caitlin. I promised myself to protect you and Sultan. I'm never breaking that promise."

After a long while, Caitlin stopped crying and Kane hugged his son and kissed his forehead. He held him in the embrace and Caitlin watched them happily. She had never felt so happy in her entire life. Grace was right. All she needed to do was to forgive and forget, then and only then could she be able to find happiness again.

Every day, Caitlin and Sultan would come early in the morning to visit him and return home late at night. She would always cook delicious meals and take them to him. Kane was so happy that Caitlin had finally forgiven him and this made his love for her increase more and more. However he had planned something very big for her, but it would have to wait until he was discharged from the hospital.
