The noise was my problem. My father was always looking for reasons to celebrate, and now that he got one in the form of my eighteenth birthday party, I should have known I was going to get little to no sleep. I would tell him that the celebrant would like to sleep and he should stop and continue partying tomorrow, but try telling the pack Alpha that.
I toss and turn one more time. This time I'm facing my father's chambers directly, glaring at the brick walls and hoping they came crashing down so the loud music and chatter would end.
Instead what happens is the fluttery feeling I get, it runs from the top of my head, down my spine and tickles my toes. I bolt and sit upright, I am wide awake now, sleep the last thing on my mind. I liked It, whatever that was, it felt.. delicious kind of. I really liked it. But I have no idea what it was. And then like someone possessed, I stand up, not in control of my limbs and movement, I start across the large expanse of my room.
I felt like something was pulling me along, and i followed it. Excitement pooled in my chest as I moved. For some reason I was getting excited. Ben, my wolf is howling in excitement as well.
“Whoa. Calm down boy.” I whispered with a chuckle as I round the corridor. Usually my father had like a million guards stationed in the corridors, but today was pack holiday, declared by my father because it's the day his heir comes of age, so everyone was either in the ceremony hall with my father, or enjoying their day off with their families.
My feet carry me, almost dancing as I go, I chuckle at this weird behavior. I was not this excited this morning when I knew my entire life was changing.
My brows furrow as I walked down the familiar corridor. That was weird. Why was I going through the gallery that overlooked the ceremony hall? From here you can see everything happening down there, but it was tucked into the building in a way that you could not see the gallery from the ceremony hall.
That's when I see her, I know instantly what she was, who she was. She led me here. She literally shone in my eyes. She was crouched down, looking intently at the party goers.
She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. I could not tear my eyes from her as I watched her golden hair frame her tiny face, her blue eyes were in slits as she watched.
Ben is going crazy inside of me. And I know why.
“My mate.” I whisper. But she hears this because her huge alarmed eyes turn to me and widen in realisation. Behind her the giant grandfather clock chimed, it was midnight. My birthday had ended and i found my mate at the perfect time.
She looks disgusted as her rose coloured, heart shaped lips open to question;
“The Alpha's son?”
My heart is elated at the sound of her voice, it was like laying on sheets of silk, and I'm too excited to question why she asked the question like it was too disgusting to fathom that the Alpha's son has been given to her by the moon goddess.
“My mate.. I can't believe this.” I say as I take a step towards her, my father would be so pleased with me for finding her, he looked less than pleased earlier when I passed all of the females he thought would be a good match for me and none of them turned out to be mine. But now I found her, and she was the most gorgeous girl I ever laid my eyes on.
She snorts and rolls her eyes,
“Yeah, right.”
And before my eyes, she jumped out of the window, I run towards the window in fear that she had somehow fallen to her death, and my shoulders sag when i see that she survived the fall but was now running away from me.
I know I have to catch up to her, she was my mate, I was hers, surely she understands that mates are for life, if she does not, I simply have to let her know.
Unlike her, I follow the stairways that led outside the ceremony hall. I don't do heights, May be she could teach me all of that stuff.
“We found our soul mate.” I tell Ben.
“And she did not want us.” He answers me, he sounds wounded.
I laugh in disbelief. I know every one of us werewolves live for our mates, I just met her but I would gladly give my life for her. That was just how it worked. You could not just not want your mate.
“It can't be. Everyone wants their mates. She was just in a hurry.”
I can tell he does not believe me, he is deeply troubled by her running away.
“She could have died from that height. But she chose to jump instead of coming with us, she chose death over us.” Now he sounds like he could not believe it.
“She was in a hurry. My father has made the pack such a peaceful and stress free place that nobody worries about anything, everything is provided by him, the only thing we worry about is finding our mate, so I'm sure she is glad she found us, and is even happier that her provider’s son is her mate.”
I have had deep troubles worrying about how to fill in my father's shoes when I become Alpha. If I was being honest, the thought of filling the shoes of a kind, wise and benevolent leader like my father, was what kept me awake and not the noise.
Her scent is what I use to track her as she was long away from my sight, even when I came into the yard, she was long gone, her scent reminds me of a field of petals. A burst of different scents and i feel like I'm floating.
I pump my legs faster. That's when I see different guards running in the same direction as I am. This causes alarm bells to ring in my ears. I run up to them and ask;
“What is going on? Is the party over? Is the pack under attack?”
The guard looks surprised to see me running alongside him.
“Yes. A group of rogues came in and we have news that they went this way.”
Alarm bells go off in my head. I have no idea if it was connected, but my mate went this way. And now that I think about It, she was dressed in all black, and carried a small knife in her hand, was she posed to throw It? I can't remember.
But she is my mate. Before anything I have to protect her.
“Eddie, you should be in bed. Your father would not like to hear you were out chasing Rogues. Leave it to us.”
I swallow. What do I do?
“Georgie was it?” I start.
The guard nods, grateful that the future alpha recalls his name. I slow down so he does too.
“The rogues are dangerous right?”
He nods and stares at me like I was crazy. Everyone knew the rogues have been causing havoc throughout the pack, and as future alpha I am supposed to protect the pack.
“The Rogues went that way.” I point away from the direction my mate's scent was coming from.
Georgie looks confused, I am confused myself. But the urge to protect my mate is greater.
“Do you not hear me?”
I swallow, meeting his eyes, daring him to challenge me.
“The dangerous rogues you're after. I saw.. I saw them go that way.”
He nods and hollers for the other guards, and they all run towards the direction I pointed. Towards nothing.
Eddie Reginald Sparks, what have you done?
