Chaos and Control

1388 Words
Maya carried Layrus into her apartment, the soft weight of her newborn son pressing against her chest. The neighbours peeked in one by one, murmuring congratulations and cooing over the baby. Maya smiled faintly, her exhaustion hidden behind gentle nods.Damein had arranged everything: groceries, baby clothes, a new crib. His efficiency left her space to breathe. Once the last box was unpacked, he kissed Layrus's forehead and said, "I have to go back to work. You've got this, Maya." Maya watched him leave, her mind racing. She placed Layrus in the cradle, staring down at his sleeping face. Pulling out her phone, she called her parents. The video call connected immediately. Her mother's face lit up with pure joy, tears welling in her eyes. "Oh, my little Layrus! I can't wait to hold him," her mother exclaimed, reaching out to the camera as if she could touch him through it. Her father's expression, however, was cautious. "Maya... who is the father?" he asked carefully. "And... is he ready for marriage now you've given birth?" Maya hesitated, her throat tightening. She knew their Christian home would never fully forgive a birth outside marriage. She forced a nod. "I... I'll handle it, Dad. I won't disappoint you." Her mother gave a soft sigh. "We only want what's best. The father should ensure Layrus grows up in a proper home. You may need to visit London... or consider moving when he's old enough to travel safely." The call ended, leaving Maya staring at Layrus in silence. "Oh, my baby..." she whispered, brushing a finger across his forehead. "You've just entered a world of commotion, but I promise to protect you from it... Unlike your father, who is dragging you into it already. You are my jelly man... my Layrus Bennett." She kissed him gently and stepped away, letting him sleep. Meanwhile, in London, Sophie enters the hospital, immaculate as always. She had booked an ultrasound days ago, though her real purpose was strategic: to check her standing and gauge Lucas's situation. "Hi, Dr Anna. Good to see you," Sophie said, her smile polite but calculating. "I see you've booked an ultrasound," Dr Anna replied, keeping her tone professional. "But your pregnancy test came back negative. Your body was responding hormonally. I can prescribe medication to regulate it if you want." Sophie raised a brow, laughing sharply. "How can you tell me I'm not pregnant?" "Based on your medical history," the doctor replied carefully, "your fertility is currently compromised from your previous abortion. Your chances now are about fifty-fifty. IVF or surrogacy may be options if you wish to conceive in the future." Something in Sophie snapped. Her eyes narrowed, and before the doctor could react, Sophie grabbed the stethoscope from the table and flung it around the doctor's neck, her grip tight. "Don't you dare talk about my past conditions!" Sophie hissed, her voice cold and dangerous. "Do you know who I am? I'm tired of everyone trying to ruin what I've built. You either work with me... or get out of my way!" The doctor froze, hands raised, nodding quickly. Sophie released her grip and straightened, her anger simmering but contained. "You are intelligent," Sophie said slowly, stepping back. "I'll be back. Don't forget that." She picked up her bag and left the office, her heels clicking sharply on the tile. Behind her, the doctor exhaled shakily, grateful the encounter hadn't escalated further. Sophie left the hospital, her heels clicking angrily against the pavement. Her mind raced. How dare she tell me I can't give birth the audacity burned like fire through her chest. She snatched her phone and dialled Lucas without a second thought. "Meet me at the hotel. Now," she said curtly when he answered. Her voice was clipped, sharp, no room for negotiation. Lucas, already in the suite, glanced at the phone in his hand. What now? He knew Sophie's visits were never innocent. When she arrived, she barged into the room, eyes blazing, scanning him like a predator sizing up its prey. "Hey, husband," she said, attempting to wrap her arms around him from behind. Lucas stepped aside instantly. "I'm not your husband. Aren't you already aware of that?" Sophie sat down, crossing her legs, a dangerous calm in her posture. "Of course I'm aware. Your mother told me about your father's... conditions. And naturally, I know. You're so blinded by your love for that tramp that you don't even see the future waiting for you." Lucas raised his hands, his patience thinning. "Not one more word, Sophie. Not a word. "I still respect you... only because of the friendship I have with your brother." Lucas said angrily, but she cut him off with a smirk. "Clearly, you didn't respect him enough to stay faithful. You slept with her, and she....... of course she opened her legs like she always does." She did it with you to hurt Josh, she can always do it with another person to hurt you. Her eyes glittered dangerously. "You have exactly one week to accept your father's condition, or I will make sure Maya falls with me. Don't underestimate me, Lucas." She lightly touched his shoulder as she left, her heels echoing like gunshots down the hallway. Lucas stood frozen, the weight of her threat pressing in. He ran a hand down his face, anger and frustration warring with the cold logic he knew he had to follow. As Sophie's heels clicked away down the hotel corridor, Lucas exhaled slowly, his hand tightening around his phone. He didn't even glance at her retreating figure before dialling his father. "Drop the case," he said, his voice sharp but controlled. "I'm ready to accept your conditions." There was a pause. Henri's measured tone came through the line. "Good. Make no mistakes, Lucas. This is for the future." Lucas ran a hand through his hair, staring at the floor. "Note this I'm only doing this to protect my little family." He ended the call and dropped into the nearest chair, the weight of decisions pressing down, yet a small relief threading through him. Back in Sweden, Maya stepped outside to take out the wastebin, the late afternoon sun casting warm light over the quiet street. She picked up the mail from the porch and her fingers paused on a familiar, cream-colored envelope stamped with the Thoreau Holdings insignia. Her heartbeat quickened. With trembling hands, she tore it open. Her eyes scanned the words, and a breath she hadn't realised she'd been holding escaped her lips. The case had been dropped. Relief washed over her in a warm, dizzying rush. In her excitement, she nearly forgot to check the rest of the mail. Later that evening, Damien was sitting cross-legged on the floor, Layrus giggling and kicking at the soft toys scattered around him. The boy's joy was infectious. Damien's eyes followed the child with a quiet tenderness. Then something on the table caught his eye another envelope. "Hey! Maya!" he called, voice tinged with curiosity. Maya appeared in the doorway, hair slightly messy, eyes bright. "Yes?" He held up the envelope. "This one just came." Maya's fingers brushed the paper eagerly. As she opened it, her eyes widened. A bright smile broke across her face, radiant and unrestrained. "My medical license... it's reinstated!" she gasped. Damien blinked, momentarily stunned, before the full joy of the news registered. Maya, in her excitement, hugged him tightly so tightly that Damien struggled for a second before gently freeing himself. "Sorry!" Maya laughed, picking up Layrus. "I just... oh, my jelly man, you've brought so many blessings into my life. I can't even comprehend it!" Damien raised an eyebrow, amused. "Wait... what did you just call him?" Maya grinned down at her son. "Jelly man." "Jelly man?" Damien repeated, shaking his head. "No, no he should be called Bobbie's man because the way he drinks from you is... alarming. Like he's eaten a full feast!" Maya laughed so hard she had to sit, Layrus cooing in her arms, the sound filling the room with warmth. Damien chuckled beside her, the two of them sharing a moment of pure joy amidst the chaos surrounding their lives. For a moment, the world outside ceased to exist. There was only Maya, Layrus, and the laughter that echoed through their home.
